Five-star quarterback Dante Moore (Detroit, Michigan) used his second official visit on a trip to Oregon over the weekend. He used his first OV on a trip to LSU, and he is beginning to make some headway when it comes to a decision. Moore has previously visited Oregon, but the official visit gave the team another opportunity to build its relationship with the No. 6 overall recruit in the class. The Ducks have continued to become a bigger part of the conversation with Moore, and so I spoke with his dad, Otha, about the visit and where things stand now. It's clear that Oregon is going to remain a big part of this process with the 2023 prospect.
“The staff, and it’s Oregon. That’s why. That’s major. Lanning is a hell of a recruiter. He puts people in the NFL. Oregon is a great fit. The offense is similar to what he runs right now, because he runs a college set in high school. Everything just fits like a glove. Fits well.”
This is not in the story, but I wanted to make an exclusive for you all here on the message boards. I asked Otha Moore how NIL is going to play into the upcoming decision for his son. He was as open as one could expect the father of a highly-touted five-star recruit to be with his answer. He emphasized that it will not be everything but will still be part of the decision-making process. Here is his extended comment on the NIL conversation surrounding his son's recruitment.
“I tell everyone this, there’s no price you could put on Dante’s head, because I know at the end of the day and you know at the end of the day, if you’re not producing you’re not anything,” he said. “If you’re sitting on the sidelines, you’re nothing. We’ve seen what some of these quarterbacks do. They get this money, they go places because of money, and what do they do? They ride the bench.
“We’re not trying to ride the bench. We’re here to compete to win a national championship and the Heisman Trophy. National championship first, Heisman Trophy second because he’s a team player. ... He just wants to be able to compete. There’s no price that I think could be put on his head, because at the end of the day if he gets to those two levels we already know what he can make.
“NIL. We know that it’s a business aspect. We totally agree with that. It’s a business aspect, but I can see my son choosing somewhere that will be less tag price than someone else that offers high price. He wants to go where it’s the best fit, great coaching and a chance to win both of those awards that I said.
“He feels that he can do that at Oregon. He feels that he can do that some other places, and that’s why we’re narrowing it down. It won’t be a top five, it won’t be a top two. He’s not a flashy quarterback, he’s a team player first.”
