Grading the Assistant Coach Hires -- Oregon's Michael Johnson

GRADING ASSISTANT COACH HIRES: Feb. 17 | Feb. 10

The head coaching carousel stopped spinning quite awhile ago, but the flurry of post-National Signing Day assistant coaching moves continued over the past week, with as many as 20 major programs announcing various changes. As we have done over the past few weeks, we rank the biggest impact hires over the past 14 days, getting views from experts at our Rivals.com team sites and National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell.

OREGON - MICHAEL JOHNSON
Local take: “I think the hire is underrated by some. With a staff full of very good recruiters, Johnson's hire is a perfect complement by having deep roots in California as well as Pac-12 experience. He is energetic and relates well to kids, has great connections already established in the high school community and is extremely personable. He also has 10 years of NFL experience, which will resonate well with many young players." – Scott Reed, DucksSportsAuthority.com

National take: “Despite all the hoopla about his potential hire at Michigan and his son, a talented 2019 quarterback, Johnson's resume is excellent and he's a very personable and effective recruiter. He relates very well to today's prospects having recently worked high school camps and coaching high school. That, along with his past experience in college, makes this a terrific hire.” – Mike Farrell, National Recruiting Director, Rivals.com

Grade: A

ICYMI: Ducks LB target adds 4th star in this week's update

This article came out on Wednesday but I'm not sure if you guys saw it here so I wanted to share.

The new Rivals250 is here, and there were 13 players who earned their coveted fourth stars this rankings cycle while not quite cracking the 250 cut this go-round. The Rivals national team breaks down the players on the move with some analysis on why their stock is on the rise.

LB REGGIE HUGHES

bmkcyi2iokr5rbu9qxne

Hughes really stands out because he's a big, physical linebacker who loves to be in the backfield during games, and so far during the 7-on-7 season, he's shown the ability to play in space and cover. If he has that physical aspect and then that level of athleticism, he could be a special prospect. UCLA, Nebraska, Oregon and others have captured his early attention. - Gorney

Postpartum FB Depression

This must be what it feels like.

The raucous end of the FB season, the firing of MH, the search for a coach, the hiring of WT, then the whirlwind recruiting efforts, a couple of media controversies.......

Football crack for this FB junkie.

And now....nothing.

Well, OK....BB is kicking butt (Men's and Woman's), T&F is off the hook, etc.

But I think that I am going into a serious FB depression after all of that adrenaline.

Can't wait for Spring practice.

Just saying.......

Ducks #6 in latest poll......

and UCLA jumped to #3 with Arizona #7. Crazy how much they want to love UCLA as they will finish third in the Pac-12 regular season and third in the country barring something unseen.

UCLA is fun to watch when clicking but come on man.........Lunardi has them at the third seed in the NCAA tourney and us as a #2 seed at the moment.....comical.

Go Ducks...beat the Beavs and win the tourney!!

Draco Bynum gets a fourth star

Looks like Bynum is getting plenty of attention. No 'official' release of new four-stars, but I happened to look at his profile as I was preparing a Film Room piece for tomorrow and there was a fourth star there...

Was really only a matter of time. He reminds me very much of Alex Forsyth last year (as far as player who was unknown in February and a top 250 guy before it was all done. The only difference is that Bynum is not as tied to the UO as Forsyth.

Nice quote about Taggart

I was talking with a Florida high school coach today and he told me this about Willie:

"We really got to know coach Taggart towards to the end of his tenure here at south Florida. But he is good people and he is going to be successful out there! He can recruit and I think is a really good play caller. He doesn't get enough credit for his offensive play calling."

SI scouting report from annonymous coaches

“The thing they do best is play hard. They have some tough dudes. They look more like an east coast style team. [Dillon] Brooks is definitely capable of hitting jump shots and threes, but you’d rather him do that than get a head of steam downhill. He’s not super athletic, but he’s strong, and he’s got that power jump. [Chris] Boucher brings a different element to their team. He gives them that stretch four. On misses, they fall back to man to man, and on makes they fall back to matchup zone. When they are guarding well, they can beat anybody in the country, but they haven’t always been consistent with it.
Their backcourt is very underrated. Those guys have toughness, they make big shots, they don’t turn it over. Their depth is impressive. I mean, Kavell Bigby-Williams is their fourth post guy, and he was the national junior college player of the year. They can go through some stretches on offense where they’re not making shots on the perimeter. Their game at Cal, they had 16 at halftime. They try to throw it to [Jordan] Bell, but he’s not a natural low post scorer. Boucher is not at all a post up guy. So they tend to fall in love with the jump shot.”

I thought this was interesting. I hope Altman is aware of this.
