Who knows but Marcus could use another polished WR.
Just when you thought all the big-name NFL free agents had been reeled in, the Chiefs went ahead a plopped a big fish in the water. Kansas City released Pro Bowl WR Jeremy Maclin on Saturday, giving receiver-needy teams a chance to land a productive player before training camp gets underway next month.
A team can never have enough good receivers, so plenty of teams will be interested in Maclin. Here are the four teams that should be pursuing him with the most vigor…
1. Carolina Panthers
The Panthers aren't in the greatest cap situation after inking Kawann Short to a big-money deal this offseason, but they have just enough space to make a deal with Maclin work. And they could certainly use him on the field. Carolina needs to find Cam Newton more receivers who can separate from man coverage. Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess just don't have the speed or route-running ability to do so consistently. Maclin does.
2. Tennessee Titans
The Titans have built a nice little receiving corps for Marcus Mariota, but it's just not ready yet. 2017 first-round pick Corey Davis, the WR1 of the future, will need some polishing. In the meantime, Tennessee could use a talented receiver with Maclin's experience. The Titans have playoff aspirations; landing Maclin would make those aspirations a bit more realistic.
3. Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens re-tooled their defense this offseason but did little to help out Joe Flacco and Baltimore's punchless passing game. Flacco needs a route-runner who can consistently rely on to get open. That kind of player is not on the roster right now. Mike Wallace is one-dimensional and Breshad Perriman looks like a bust. Baltimore's offense needs Maclin if it's going to challenge Pittsburgh for the AFC North title.
4. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams haven't had a Pro Bowl receiver on the roster since Tori Holt. It's been that long. Maclin would fill a huge hole and he has experience in West Coast offenses. Coach Sean McVay would have Maclin running a lot of the same routes he did in both Philly and Kansas City. It's a perfect fit for both sides, but will Maclin be willing to play for a team that hasn't made the postseason in well over a decade? That's the big question. Los Angles may have to overpay to land him.
