Tuesday practice notes...

I just got back moments ago from Tuesday's practice. I'll add comments here but for now the very quickest of thoughts.

  • The WR's with the ones today were Jaylon Redd, Brenden Schooler and Juwan Johnson
  • They have some injuries which are affecting that, in particular Johnny Johnson III
  • Strange mix with the starting defense today. I'm not sure it was real. Looked like split squad. Perhaps to throw off the media during our limited viewing minutes? Maybe the defense for one side for this Saturday?
  • Tyler Shough is progressing very nicely. I've noticed an uptick in how confident he carries himself during drills.
  • Thibodeaux is starting to line up in drills in a more prominent position. The first couple weeks he would tend to hang towards the back of the line for his turn, now he seems to be more aggressive with that. Interesting.
  • Today was only the second day this spring they practiced on the outside practice fields
  • Watching WR coach Bouknight was interesting. He did not hesitate to make a guy redo a drill if he didn't like his technique. He was teaching them a swim type move to use when a DB is manning him up close on a route. He made some of them redo it several times in a row. I'm hoping that was a glimpse of the kind of perfection he is demanding all the time of them. They need to get better from last year.

More WBB Recruiting News

I'm just regurgitating what I read on O Live about women's recruiting so let me know(or just ignore it) if all this is already known/not news. But it seems like the women are gaining a solid following and the interest is there on the recruiting front. So now UO is in the final 2 for a top 40 Fwd who is about to visit. Seems like the UO sports programs are feeding off one another.

OT: Important history anniversaries coming up

We are nearing some important anniversaries in American History this month and next, along with two of the most famous echo’s to come down to us in our national history.

April 19, 1775. The battles at Concord and Lexington and the “Shot Heard Round The World” which started the War of American Independence. The American commander, Captain Parker ordered his men: “Stand your ground. Do not fire unless fired upon, but if they want to have a war, let it begin here”.

June 17, 1775. The battle of Bunkers Hill and the famous order of “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes”.

The need for speed

With Seven McGee and Anthony Beavers recruited for 2021, it appears the Oregon coaches have reaffirmed their commitment to elite speed.

Not that this Oregon footprint ever went away, but early on the emphasis was on upping the physicality in the trenches.

The Alabamas and Clemsons have both, and Oregon will too.

Top 20 football requires tough defense and strength in the trenches, but in the modern game you also have to have the athletic ability to make plays and score points.

The Lamichael James/DeAnthony Thomas era continues to pay dividends. Kids continue to describe Oregon as "a dream offer" and "my favorite school growing up."

What It's Like to Work Out With Oregon Strength Coach Aaron Feld

“This is how Feld hopes all the Ducks will look when they’ve been in his program for two full years. He wants them strong enough to withstand the rigors of the schedule, but he also wants them explosive enough to dominate equally strong players. “

Great article that answered a few questions I have been thinking about. Specifically in regards to the OL that were recruited under a different training and blocking style.

It may be time to start getting excited

In yesterday's "War Room" Scott made a declaration that's worth marking down:

Overall, the defense is just better this year; the addition of Kayvon Thibodeaux
and the newly eligible DJ Johnson make the pass rush formidable; Johnson is one of the most gifted athletes on the team and is going to make an impact this season. Thibodeaux is relentless and has a passion for the game and for getting better.

Don't miss the War Room. Don't even make coffee first.

A.J. has started a "Better or Worse" series and I expect as he reviews position groups, his analysis will reveal the Ducks to be improved in most areas next year. Quarterback, offensive line, running backs, pass rush, linebackers, secondary.

Relentless and more athletic. That's a recipe for winning. A lot.

Yet at the same time the schedule starts harder and offers a daunting challenge on the road.
