Website tabs Ducks as a potential disappointment

College Football News says Oregon is likely to be a preseason IT pick, but one particular challenge sets up the Ducks to be one of Power Five's top disappointments in 2019:

Getting back Justin Herbert at quarterback is a big deal, but getting back almost everyone else on offense – including all five starters up front – matters even more.

Helped by an amazing recruiting class, the defense is full of talent, too, with eight starters returning. Both kickers are back, head coach Mario Cristobal is boosting up the profile as one of the hot coaches in the game.

Everything that was building over the last few years appears ready to break through to put the Ducks back into the College Football Playoff picture.

To get there, though, Oregon has to go at least 11-1. That could be a problem with a showdown against Auburn in Arlington, Texas to start the season. Lose, and there’s no margin for error the rest of the way.

To get there, the Ducks have to win the Pac-12 North. Washington is going to be good, too, and the rivalry battle is in Seattle. The Stanford game is in Palo Alto. Washington State is still good, and Cal is strong enough to go bowling again – and that’s just the North.

A daunting road schedule, the article says, is the Ducks biggest obstacle.

MBB Too Early Top 25

Not bad for the Ducks. Sounds like a grad transfer SF is visiting and King being a top 40 probably will leave (despite our advice to the contrary, lol).
Still, they should be pretty solid with the incoming talent and assuming Wooten and Pritchard do the smart thing, ie, taking our advice.

Checking in with War Doggone Eagle

CBS Sports writer Barrett Sallee has a feature on the Auburn Tigers today. He describes this as a pivotal year for head coach Gus Malzahn, whose future may depend on the outcome of the position battle at quarterback.

Malzahn is in the second year of a 7-year, $49 million contract. Last year Auburn finished the regular season 7-5, 3-5 in the SEC, before a blowout win over Purdue in the Music City Bowl.

The Tigers have to replace Jarrett Stidham, who departed for the NFL draft. Holdover Joey Gatewood (6-5, 237) is leading slightly in a two-man race with five-star true freshman Bo Nix.

Their head coach wrote the book (literally) on hurry-up spread football and this spring one of their goals is to ramp up the pace with Malzahn taking over playcalling duties as he did in the bowl game and as OC in the Cam Newton championship season.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder? Weary?

Good evening all,

I want to first apologize for less than normal board activity on my part. Work got especially crazy over the last couple of weeks and throw in that this is near the end of the term for my MBA classes and it has been very busy in the Reed household!

I know that there was a lot of positive response to the article on the football support of the rest of the athletic department and I thank you all. I am very fortunate in that - despite the reality of a full time day job - that the connections made are solid.

I am working on some things right now that will go to another level. I have to be somewhat discreet because it involves my day job and some ideas we have been working on to bring you even more information.

I love doing things like the 'Inside Read' as a weekly 'tidbit' of information and, if you read between the lines on the Monday Inside Read, Wednesday War Room and Flock Talk, you will get a bigger picture. Though I cannot be overly specific, I will say that sometime this summer, there is a very strong chance that I will be closer to the action, so to speak, and able to provide far more 'stuff.'

My goal has always been to bring as much solid writing and information as possible and that will always be my goal personally. But we must never allow ourselves too many moments of arm-breaking, self-congratulatory revelry. It's not about me, it's about YOU our readers.

I have always, always, ALWAYS, appreciated the members of this site; you (for the most part) keep it civil, avoid the sophomoric humor; keep it (mostly) about Oregon sports and hold us to a high standard of professionalism.

When I was 'just another member' we had plenty of live discussions; I think those were all very healthy and I appreciate every one of those moments.

I remember our old time Sunday night chats - which we nicknamed "Margaritaville Sundays" mostly due to the fact that my wife was watching Extreme Home Makeover while we enjoyed Margarita's and I spent that hour on chat!

Anyway, as soon as I have more details to provide, I will share it with you, but that might not be until sometime in early June before I know all of the specifics. In the mean time, I am taking some immediate steps to provide even more content. Hopefully, the fruits of those labors will bear starting next week!
