Getting a coach that wants to be at Oregon

I have heard a lot of talk about this the last couple of days. Hiring a coach with Oregon ties like Justin Wilcox for example. Obviously, that makes it a very small pool. So how do you hire a coach who "wants " to be at Oregon. It' s simple. Seven year deal starting with a 100 million dollar buy out. Going down 10 million a year. Crazy you say? I don't know. There is no limit on a buyout. If you offer a Luke Fickel 9 million a year, with the toxic buyout that would guarantee a 6-8 year commitment and he doesn't want it, move on to the next candidate. You are telling the person you hire that you want more than a 2-3 year commitment. That is by no means unreasonable A good chance that someone really good wants to make a commitment. I'm not convinced that Mario is leaving , but if he does. something has to be done to put an end to what I consider betrayal. Ducks gave Willie his chance. Ducks gave Mario his chance. He will have built the program to the doorstep of real success and then destroy that progress in an instant. As far as his family, with the money he will be making , he can buy his own private jet and be in Miami in 5 hours whenever he needs to be.

Kiffen to Miami?

from ESPN:

Getting warmer in Miami?

With Miami in search of an athletic director, and possibly a head coach, there are some serious questions the school's board of trustees are mulling over. To start, one source close to the situation said the school must decide what it wants in an AD: someone who can handle the business side of athletics with fundraising, licensing, branding, marketing and name, image and likeness taking center stage, or someone football-minded who can deal with NIL as it comes.

The goal is to have an AD in place before making any decisions about coach Manny Diaz. The source also indicated the school is prepared to heavily increase its financial support to football. But throwing money at the situation is not going to solve the issues.

The board is working on identifying where to invest -- including coaching salaries, support staff and recruiting. This source indicated the board has not yet made a decision about whether Diaz will return for another year. -- Andrea Adelson

One possible coach for Miami? Kiffin.

Kiffin did a terrific job at Florida Atlantic before landing back in the SEC at Ole Miss, where he has the Rebels in position to win 10 games in the regular season for the first time in school history. Kiffin has strong support from a group of former Miami players and has maintained his South Florida ties from when he was at FAU.

It remains to be seen whether Miami could put together the kind of financial package that would pry Kiffin away from Ole Miss (and the SEC) after just two seasons. Those closest to Kiffin will tell you he is much more consumed with competing for championships than he is money, and the path to the College Football Playoff would seem to be much easier in the ACC Coastal than it is in the SEC West.

Kiffin is making $4.5 million this year at Ole Miss, with a $500,000 retention bonus if he is still the coach on Dec. 31. He is slated to earn $5.25 million in 2022, $5.5 million in 2023 and $5.75 million in 2024, and that doesn't count what could be more than $500,000 in performance bonuses this season. Kiffin's buyout if he left this year would be in the $4 million range.

Kiffin said he enjoyed living in Boca Raton along the water when he was at FAU, which also could be a factor. LSU's head-coaching opening could be another factor, especially if Fisher stays put at Texas A&M. Either way, Ole Miss will be aggressive in doing what it needs to do to keep Kiffin, who received a raise and an extension prior to this season. Kiffin's presence has attracted a ton of national publicity to Ole Miss, which is No. 12 in the latest CFP rankings. -- Lo

Not the best of feelings right now

Rather than tack on to the end of my other post, thought I would just say right now that the current signals do not look good. We will see, but I think the OC list may now become a HC list.

If Cristobal leaves, yes, I expect multiple high level commits to decommit. Yes, it will be ugly for teh next few weeks.

I would imagine some current players also look at options.

Rob Mullens already has a list of people to call and a lot of this is going to depend on how he approaches. Does he go all in for a big time coach, does he seek someone that will bring more stability? I don't think Justin Wilcox will be the hire. Too many reasons to state here. I know Canzano mentioned Chip Kelly. I suppose that could happen, but I imagine there would be some unique language were that to happen -- i.e., find the absolute best recruiter in the nation and make sure he is a part of this staff. Second, DC has to be an elite guy.

FWIW...regarding Mario and Miami, or anyone else..

Good sources say that Mario has a very large contract already in front of him!
So, if you’re still wondering if he’s going anywhere...the answer is still NOPE!!!🙈😎
And FWIW, agents put this crap out there LOTS, and use it to do just this...force schools to pump up coaches contracts to protect their interest...and it works in this type of scenario about 100% of the time!🤣😜

I’m as harsh of a critic as anyone but

I still remember the days of or D line lining up 4 yards off the ball and when going to the Holiday bowl was a major accomplishment and when we had Chris Harper playing QB (which at points this season I would have preferred) and when landing a top 10 JC prospect (let alone a top 100 hs prospect) was a major coup and with all that said… AB still sucks.

Also Moorehead and DeRuyter need to go.

EDIT: I also remember the good times and still miss Osborn, Greatwood, and John Neal.

Pac-12 Championship: Cristobal post-game comments...

Opening Statement

“Good evening, appreciate you guys waiting around. Certainly not the result we wanted. We felt good coming in, had a good week of practice and preparation. We had a really big goal trying to win our third (Pac-12 Championship) in a row but credit to them they earned the victory tonight. We found ourselves in third down situations and couldn’t convert them. And certainly the big turnover early with the interception for a touchdown, and we couldn’t capitalize on turnovers that we forced on them. We got down there and had a field goal miss and then went three-and-out after the other turnover.”

On reports of his future…

“I don’t know what you mean when you say someone’s offered (a job). I haven’t talked to anybody. Let’s not create narratives. As we sit here in this press conference, Oregon is working on some stuff for me and that’s what I have right now. That’s the extent of the conversation.”

On uncertainty surrounding his future…

“I would say if there’s something to report, I will report it. I always have. Over the years, because certain things are put out there or not. Every year our entire staff, whether behind the scenes, whether public or not, we’ve always had different people come for our people, including myself, and how the media treats it and how they choose to posture it, I have no control. As I just mentioned, that’s the extent of it.”

On if players were distracted by rumors…

“I don’t know what to tell you. I can tell you this, if I had any plans, if I had a decision to make or if I had something to report I would and I wouldn’t keep it one way or the other. OK? Do I expected people to come at me? Yeah, I do. It happens every single year. Is there anything else to report besides that? There’s nothing else to report besides that. When there ever is, if there ever is, I’ll make sure to get it to you as fast as I can.”

On if he would listen to another job offer…

“I’m not going to get into hypotheticals. We just finished off and we played and coached very poorly and I think you understand I have a job to do. I feel like we’re going in circles with the same answers. You’re going to get the same response.”

On if he thought about changing quarterbacks…

“We're playing well as an offense. We went in there thinking a certain game plan would give us the best chance and that's what we went with. So we stuck with that decision.”
