Good signs from Saturdays scrimmage

Oregon held a closed scrimmage in Autzen Stadium Saturday April 13th, about a hundred plays total in their 11th practice of the spring session.

Patrick Pierson of goducks.com was the only reporter allowed to watch. You can read his full story here:

Some highlights:

The defense shut down the first four series, four straight three and outs. D.J. Johnson had a pair of sacks.

Cyrus Habbibi-Likio led all rushers with 15 carries for 75 yards and a TD. He's had a strong spring, showing himself to be more than just a goal line back.

Travis Dye broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run.

The tight ends looked good, with Hunter Kampmoyer, Cam McCormick and Spencer Webb all hauling down passes.

On one drive Juwan Johnson hauled in a pair of passes, good for a total of 28 yards.

The least conclusive part of the Spring Game

2 p.m. Saturday April 20 from Autzen Stadium. Broadcast live on the PAC-12 Network. A ton of important recruiting visitors coming, including DJU.

Spring games are great for getting a general impression of the team, checking how younger players are transforming their bodies, assessing the attitude, seeing how the young quarterbacks are progressing, etc.

But one frequent outcome is fool's gold. Almost every year there is a reserve wide receiver who scores a couple of touchdowns, nabs a long pass, maybe even eclipses a hundred yards.

Invariably we get excited about his potential to crack the lineup and make an unexpected contribution next season.

Trouble is, that dazzling performance typically comes against a third team cornerback and a base defense.

I try to remind myself to keep my view broad, and not zero in on any particular spring game heroics as definitive.

I AM interested to see a couple of the running backs, though. I've read that Cyrus Habibi-Likio and Darrian Felix have a bigger role this spring, and I want to see how they're running and if they break anything.

But the stats don't count until Auburn in August.

What are you looking for in the spring game? Are you going to bring your cans of food and attend the DSA tailgate like a man or are you wimping out and watching from home? (Just kidding about the wimping out part--I know some of you have limitations of distance or health.)

Flock Talk: Running down a dream

Today in Flock Talk, I took a broad look at the past and present recruitment of DJU. Are we talking too much about one player? I don't think so. Number one overall; elite QB prospect. Generational guy. Big Masoli and Mariota fans and a very fun family.

Oh, plus it game me a chance to quote Rudyard Kipling - I mean, who doesn't love that in a football story?

Bigger, stronger and more athletic

Reading with great interest A.J.'s Better or Worse series, and that seems to be the recurring theme.

I was thinking that's especially true on the defensive line, where in addition to the much-celebrated KT and DJ, the Ducks will add Kristian Williams, Su'ava Poti and Keyon Ware-Hudson.

Very bright future in that group.
