PAC 12 Multis Underway in Tucson

The Pac 12 Track Championships always have the multi competitions one weekend before the main meet. The multis include the decathlon for the men and the heptathlon for the women. Three of the top decathletes in the NCAA are in the PAC 12. However only Oregon’s Max Vollmer will be competing in the decathlon at the conference level. The other two have elected to pass on the decathlon until the NCAAs.

The Duck men bring a 12 straight conference championships winning streak into this meet. However, form charts are pointing to a UCLA victory. I do not feel we should put too much confidence in form charts as a way to predict the outcome. The athletes still have to go out and compete. So go Ducks!

OT for Military Buffs: "Military Blunders"

Great BBC series focusing on some well known, and some lesser known, even some ancient, military disasters brought about for the most part by generals with early successes that lead to later disasters. Well known... Napoleon in Russia, Montey's Market Garden, MacArthur's foray into China and many less known, eg, Crusades, failed siege of Baghdad in WWI, failed Iran hostage relief.
Very well narrated an explained by eminent military scholars. Six or 7 episodes. I have Youtube Premium with no adds, so I'm not sure how well it plays with adds, but it's good stuff for amateur military history buffs. First 3 episodes should make the rest easy to find.....

Precise, up-to-the-minute odds on DJU

His father tweeted out that "Mount Sac is out" so D.J. Uiagalelei is down to Oregon and (Gulp) Clemson who has gobbled up seemingly every 5-star who has committed recently, including 5-star running back Demarkus Bowman today:

Here's a couple of features on DJU:

https://www.si.com/college-football...ecruiting-quarterback-rankings-clemson-oregon

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2833774-the-kid-with-the-golden-arm.

Based on all the reports here and elsewhere, I would estimate the Ducks chances of getting his commitment on Sunday at 11.3741%.

But A.J. will have the final word on that.

Ducks 10th in post-spring power rankings; over/under wins at 9

This stuff only matters to this extent: it makes for some conversation in the long stretch between the spring game and PAC-12 Media Days, and the perceptions and rankings dictate starting poll position, which matters in reaching those cool bowl games at the end of the year. If you start, higher, it's easier to rise even higher, and easier to remain relevant if you have an early stumble.

The more I look at this team, the culture, the off season additions, the dramatic improvement in strength, conditioning and overall athleticism, the way they have built around offensive and defensive lines and (as Scott pointed out in today's Flock Talk) versatile, athletic defensive backs, the more convinced I am 2019 is going to be a special year in Oregon football.

There's a lot of substance behind the hype. as bad as the fans at UW and OSU want to dismiss it.

Stud Cally PG Decom's from Dook

I'd bet Altman will get on this. While nobody will take PP's spot as a Sr and Richardson was starting to shine, he could play yr 1 and start yr 2. Anyway, we struck out on Stanley, so maybe Altman gets in on the Boogie Ellis action.Visited UO 10/19/18. UNC 10/12/18.

Softball Post Mike White

No doubt money talks in softball or Mike White wouldn't have departed for Texas with most of his Oregon team. If you ask Mike how he's doing with our girls he ranks at either 6 or 12 depending on which rating service you believe with a record of 39-12 with hardly a dominating performance against ranked teams. And he's ranked below UCLA, Arizona St. and Washington in our own PAC 12 right now, after losing to the lady dawgs in the playoffs last year.

And this year, MIke got swept by the dominant No. One, OU, you know, the team Melissa left to bootstrap his leavings at Jane's field in Eugene. We tend to avoid our eyes on a team that emerged from life support to a 21-25 record as of now. And while we may not like the rumor rumblings about Lombardi and her coaching methods, we cannot deny that she came from a system that has actually won NC's. Something Mike couldn't deliver while at Oregon with all the talent he had.

The Duck site has an interesting article on the impact of Sierra Romero on our ladies' development skill and attitude wise that bears reading. She is the stuff of H of F stature and respect. And if we pay some attention to Lombardi's chops at OU, so is she. These ladies know how to play and win at a championship level.

I'm not betting the farm on Lombardi's success in bringing an NC to Eugene, but I may take out an equity loan on her chances on cleaning Mike's clock down the line some day.

Standout marks at Stanford

The Ducks’ distance crew took center stage Thursday at the Payton Jordan Invitational and responded with seven lifetime bests and a win from Jessica Hull in her signature event. Among the collection of personal bests, Reed Brown moved to within a second of the UO top-10 list at 1,500 meters and Carmela Cardama Baez became the No. 9 Duck performer at 5,000 meters.

In her first 1,500-meter race since winning the NCAA title last June in Eugene, Hull out-leaned six-time NCAA champion and current pro Karissa Schweizer for the top spot in section one. She stopped the clock in 4:12.08 for the win and the No. 1 time in the NCAA this year.

Brown was the first collegian across the line in the top section of the 1,500 meters. In his 3:38.76 effort, he replaced his previous PR of 3:39.56 from the 2018 Bryan Clay Invitational. The outing also puts him among the top 10 on the NCAA performance list. Teammate James West (3:42.01) also improved his national status.

Already a top-10 national performer at 10,000 meters, Cardama Baez ran to a runner-up finish, and top collegiate result, in 15.38.77 to establish a new lifetime best in the 5,000 meters. She entered the race with an overall best of 15:55.00 from indoors and an outdoor PR of 16:12.15 from last year’s Bryan Clay meet.

In the Ducks’ first race of the night, Susan Ejore dropped her lifetime best from 2:03.09 to 2:02.66 in an overall runner-up finish in the top flight of the 800 meters. She was the top collegiate performer in the field and remains third on the NCAA season performance list. Her time of 2:02.66 is just outside of the program’s top 10, needing a 2:02.50 to crack that list.

Charlie Hunter and Cooper Teare finished third and fourth, respectively, in section two of the 1,500 meters. Hunter crossed in a season-best 3:43.08 and Teare was right behind in 3:43.13, a personal best for the sophomore. They were the top collegiate performers in the field. Thursday was Teare’s first race since his 13:32.73 at 5,000 meters two weeks ago at the Cardinal Classic.

Running in her second-ever steeplechase, junior Amanda Gehrich crossed the finish in 10:10.99 to knock more than four seconds off her previous best. Based on times entering the meet and other marks from the race, she moves into the national top 30 in the steeplechase.

Freshman Taylor Chiotti posted her third 1,500-meter PR in as many races, all three at Stanford meets. She had a time of 4:20.29 to finish third in section four of the event. Junior Jackson Mestler shaved just over a second off his personal best at 5,000 meters, posting a time of 14:02.53 in section two of the event.

Another Hawaiian QB to keep an eye on

I recently had the chance to watch Class of 2020 quarterback Jayden De Laura play at the adidas 7-on-7 national championships and I came away very impressed with him. I cover the Southeast so he's obviously not a guy I knew a ton about coming in, but he was one of the most buzzed about players at the event.

Afterward, I checked in with coaches at a few programs to see if he's on the radar and several got back with me that they were hoping to see him throw in person.

I checked in with Jayden this week and it turns out that Oregon is one of the schools scheduled to stop by St. Louis High (alma mater of former Oregon quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jeremiah Masoli) during the evaluation period.

Right now, De Laura has offers from Hawaii and Western Kentucky, but I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up with plenty of Power Five options, sort of like Dillon Gabriel last year (USC and Georgia offered and hosted for officials and he signed with UCF.)

Here is his film:
