Herbert in camp

I’m curious on the observations and insights from the insiders on Herbert’s possible evolution on passing for various situations. I think we all agree he can make any throw, and our receiver concerns with drops have been well discussed(deservedly). They need to improve, but to my fan eye (not implying I’m some football guru), it seemed Herbert didn’t adjust to the type of throw as much as I’ve felt others have.

He tends to throw heaters all the time to my eye, when a little more touch sometimes may help our receivers with more catchable balls.?? Curious on what people have seen in camp and also other opinions on this. I’ve heard he’s having a great camp and that is music to all or our ears.

Practice notes: Tuesday 8-13

New rules at practice today for media with restrictions of video and photos. It is going to be very difficult to get pictures of certain position groups going forward, specifically QB, WR, TE and OL. I'll do the best I can.
  • Nice energy and focus to start practice which is always good following a scrimmage
  • I watched mostly the LB and DL groups today, but we only had a few minutes to do so
  • Isaac Slade Matautia and Troy Dye seem to have the No. 1 at ILB locked in
  • Lamar Winston has No. 1 at OLB locked in
  • Not sure who the Stud LB will be but three guys are in the running, DJ Johnson, Bryson Young and Mase Funa. Whoever wins the start will be a good player with solid backups
  • The DE position is going to be solid assuming there are not many injuries.
  • DT/NT I am still concerned about with Jordon Scott the only guy I see for sure at the Pac-12 level now
  • Guys like Gary Baker could probably help there, but he was on IR today. They could use Austin Faoliu in there as well
  • The four freshman DE's, Thibs, Ware-Hudson, Dorlus and Williams will be helpful for sure, maybe even this year. I suspect all four will be solid Pac-12 players before they are done.
  • Later today we have interviews with Coach Cristobal, Brady Breeze and Isaac Slade-Matautia
  • All for now

Practice notes: Thursday 4/15

Just finished up watching Thursday's practice which was held on the HDC practice fields in full pads. Here are some of my thoughts from today:

  • Started with the Oklahoma drill again following warmups. Not quite as much explosive excitement as last time but the guys still loved it. I think there were less clear cut winners this time for them to get jacked up about, although it did seem the defense may have gotten the better of it overall based on their reactions
  • I watched the OL for a while today and was very impressed with Shane Lemieux, Calvin Throckmorton and Jake Hanson. Those three guys are moving very well and look exactly like you want your high level D-1 OL to look. Very nice strength yet they have acceptable flexibility.
  • Overall given the depth and talent, this OL group has the opportunity to be the best in Duck history. But they will have to play very well this year to prove it because there have been some excellent Duck lines over the years.
  • I'm the last guy in the world who likes to be critical of players but as an analyst I'm not doing my job if I completely avoid it. So I'm just going to throw out there that I did not like what I saw out of Juwan Johnson's hands today. He did not hold onto the ball in the drills I watched like he needs to. Yes, the balls thrown his way were not perfect, but he needs to catch balls he gets two hands on. Hoping he's learning to relax and getting those out of his system now.
  • I believe I said this in a report last week but the Stud LB group is very exciting. I really don't know how they will shake out on the depth chart but from what I have seen from them so far this spring I give the following grades to them: Bryson Young B+, DJ Johnson B, Mase Funa B. So although Johnson has an extra year in the system vs. Funa, Funa is very strong and quicker. Johnson has about 15 pounds and some length on Funa. Overall if the season started today, I see Young as the Stud starter but a toss up between Johnson and Funa for the other snaps.
  • Last thing I have for you today is Dru Mathis. I'm impressed with him. I think he will be helpful this year, although he won't be a starter. He could start for half the Pac-12 teams though.
  • Interviews with Arroyo and Avalos around noon today.
  • Practice is closed Friday and Saturday then the team has Sunday and Monday off. Next practice report will be Tuesday.
  • All for now.

Davis on moving to DB

Looking at Chile's chart, he's probably only about 5 men down the CB depth chart this year. Hope he catches on fast. His number could easily come up at least as a back up if the inevitable injuries start to pile up. Maybe there's some guys at S ahead of him if it comes to that. Ran track in HS in Fla, so he's got some speed.

Taj Griffin

The former Duck landed at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmund, Oklahoma. The Bronchos have 10 starters back on offense but their leading returning running back had 71 yards last year. They open their season Thursday September 5th against Pittsburg State.

On the school website, here's what they said about Taj:

Another newcomer, Taj Griffin, arrived on campus just days before fall camp, but is prepared to enter the mix and add another talented element to the Broncho backfield. Griffin spent the past four seasons at Oregon. He was granted a fifth year by the NCAA just last week after only appearing in three games in 2018. Griffin tallied 879 yards on 138 carries at Oregon, scoring six touchdowns in the run game. He also had 408 yards receiving on 30 catches, including an 83-yard touchdown reception last season, and scored four times catching the ball out of the backfield.

He had some moments at Oregon but never made it to the top of the depth chart. Good luck to him. Hope he gets a chance to play some football and finish his degree.
