Qu*ck! Rossi commits to Ducks.

Ducks got a walk-on commitment from Kanen Rossi, 6-3, 290 guard from Sunset High in Beaverton.

He's the second local walk-on offensive lineman in the last two days after Bradley Jaramillo of Lake Oswego.

Mirabal and Cristobal understand the importance of practice numbers and development, filling all the roles on a football team. Every once in a while a guy like this turns into a player.

That the Ducks work every aspect of putting together a team is a big part of their success.

Figueroa moves on

Here's another short clip from the Oregonian

By James Crepea | The Oregonian/OregonLive EUGENE —
Oregon men’s basketball will need to replace its leading rebounder. LJ Figueroa, who averaged 12.3 points, 6 1. rebounds and 1.6 steals for the Ducks this season, announced Tuesday that he is signing with an agent and beginning his professional career.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my family for always being supportive through all the peaks and valleys throughout my college career; I’m truly blessed to have such a support group around me,” Figueroa wrote via Instagram. “Next, I would like to thank St. John’s for welcoming me with open arms into their basketball family. Lastly, I would like to thank Oregon for this past season for helping me become a better player on the court in person off the court; it truly felt like home. I’m happy to announce I will be signing with an agent and preparing for the next chapter of my basketball career.”

Penei Sewell dropping in the NFL draft? Are these people insane?

Ordinarily I don't care a lick about the NFL, but it's an interesting story for Duck fans this year with a great Duck slated to go early in the draft, something that's very good for the future of Oregon football.

There's even speculation that Kayvon Thibodeaux will make it three in a row next year, perhaps even as the overall number one.

As for Sewell, many consider him a generational left tackle with a Hall of Fame future (former Cowboys GM Gil Brandt is in that camp) but in NFL camps, they second guess everything.

The first three teams are all taking quarterbacks.

Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer says the Bengals, at number five, need help on the offensive line (they gave up 48 sacks last year) but will instead select receiver JaMarr Chase of LSU and reunite him with Joe Burrow. Star receiver A.J. Green left the team via free agency this off season.

In Detroit, who picks 6th, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press speculates the Lions may pick Northwestern tackle Rashawn Slater over Sewell.

"I had a scout speculate to me the other day that the Lions might go Rashawn Slater over Sewell if both are on the board," Birkett writes. "Slater is the safer pick, and can play any position. But Sewell is a stud with the potential to be one of the premier tackles in the game."

News and notes from around PAC-12 football and spring practice

A patchwork USC offensive line allowed 8 sacks in the spring game, and Clay Helton is getting some pointed criticism:

Washington edge rusher Zion Tupuola-Fetui has a ruptured Achilles tendon and will miss six to ten months.

Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer has a strong hold on the starting quarterback job at Utah, going 15-15 passing in the spring game, for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

The Beavers got a commitment from an in-state wide receiver, three-star Cole Prusia of Tualatin.

Pesky Max Borghi is back for Washington State, and he's optimistic about their offense.

Recruiting wrap: it starts up front

Two others to watch are tackle Josh Conerly of Ranier Beach High in Seattle and guard Ernest Greene of Saint John Bosco, neither of whom have announced any official visit plans as yet:

Oregon baseball has been surprising a lot of teams this year. Oregon, picked 7th in the preseason poll, has won six of its eight series so far. This includes taking five of six from rival Oregon State. Oregon currently sits tied for 1st in the conference (based on winning %) and is looking to keep its momentum going having won 11 of its last 15. UCLA, voted the preseason favorite to win the conference, has lost two of its last three series but comes off a series sweep of Utah this past weekend having scored 42 runs over the three games. UCLA is currently on a six game win streak (10-5 in last 15).

Oregon and UCLA both come in as strong hitting teams and will put stress on their opponents’ pitching staff. I would give UCLA a slight edge in hitting as they have some strong hitters on the front end of their lineup that can do damage and have 340 hits on the year as a team, Oregon only has 282. UCLA also has hit 33 home runs to Oregon’s 27. Even giving Oregon the benefit of the doubt that they have played three less games due to COVID cancellations, UCLA does have a slight edge in this category. On the basepaths, Oregon has proved more effective, going 33/40 on stolen bases while UCLA has gone 27/35.

Pitching, however, is a different story. Oregon’s starters have the slight edge on UCLA’s starters with a lower ERA among them as well as they have gone deeper in their starts into later innings, saving the bullpen. UCLA’s bullpen touts a decent ERA but do not have that solid closer they can depend on in a close game. Oregon on the other hand has one of the best closers in the league in Kolby Somers, who has six saves on the year (nine appearances), touting a 1.86 ERA. six saves is currently second in the conference in saves. Pitching edge goes to Oregon.

Both teams have played some common opponents in Arizona and USC. Both Oregon and UCLA had similar showings against these teams, Oregon and UCLA both going 2-1 vs. USC and UCLA going 2-1 against Arizona while Oregon went 1-2.

Finally, Oregon is the home team in this series and it is important to look at stats to consider this. Oregon is currently 12-4 at home while UCLA is 6-6 on the road. Oregon is lucky to get UCLA at home, as UCLA has struggled significantly more on the road than at home (UCLA is 16-5 at home). Edge to Oregon.

Prediction: Oregon wins series 2-1

BB: NCAA Regional projections

Per D1baseball.com, they currently project Oregon as not only a regional host but as the current #5 overall seed in the bracket. Ducks on a great path!
