Chuba Hubbard...

Just got off the phone with Chuba. A few notes.

  • First of all, what a great name
  • He really likes the Ducks and it sounds like Oregon will be squarely in the mix for him
  • We have him as ATH in the database and that is what he is. Ducks are thinking DB and/or RB for him
  • Three years in a row Canadian national junior champion in the 100m. His best time is 10.55.
  • Tremendous speed/size ratio. Off the charts in fact
All for now.

GA ATH DeeJay Dallas...

I spoke with the four-star ATH and he is definitely excited about his Oregon offer the Ducks gave him yesteday. The story will be first thing in the morning but I did want to say I feel this is a legit recruitment for Oregon. Sounds like Coach Neal has made a very good impression on him.

Not to threadjack myself but I also spoke with Texas DE Taquon Graham today. That one was more of a low energy interview that left me with the impression that the Ducks will be fortunate to even get a visit. More to come on him but that one is no emergency article.

Devon Allen/NCAA Indoor

Devon Allen had the fastest qualifying time in the 60h prelims at the NCAA Indoor Championships......well barely Allen ran a 7.574 and LSU's Jordan Moore ran a 7.579. Tomorrow they will face off in the finals, along with the six other top 60 meter hurdlers in the NCAA.

The meet will be streamed on ESPN 3, beginning at 1:00. There will be a condensed TV replay on Sunday.

Other than Devon Allen, the Ducks (by and large) had a spectacular day one. At the end of day one the Oregon men are in first place with 25 points. Although the women stand in 20th place with only two points, they were outstanding in the preliminary heats and should score an avalanche of points tomorrow in the 60m, 60 hurdles, 200m, 4x400m, and maybe the shot put. They could score a whopping 50 points tomorrow!

A lot of Ducks preformed magnificently, but the day belonged to the King. Chez out did even himself by winning the 5,000 and then after a 30min rest ran the 1 mile anchor leg in the distance medley relay race. He took the baton somewhere out of first place and then essentially toyed with Washington's rested and fresh All American miler,Izaic Yorks. It was beyond greatness. Chez made it look easy as he left the competition in the dust and added ten big points for Oregon by winning the DMR. Tomorrow he will run the 3k.

Alex Forsyth...

Quick update on the West Linn OL who was offered last week by the Ducks. He is seeing his recruitment skyrocket because as you know, once Oregon offers, everybody does. Now he is up to 8 BCS level offers...though he does not have a single star yet. He is very likely to start off a 3-star when it happens.

The good news for Greatwood is that we are hearing that Alex actually grew up a Duck fan. Needless to say Oregon has a good chance with him.

I'm supposed to chat with him today so I'll report back after that.

Incredible Ducks! Two More National Championships!

The performance by the Oregon track and field athletes this weekend has me exhausted. I found several things to be near beyond belief, beginning with Devon Allen winning the hurdles national championship after the terrible ACL injury he had to overcome. What an athlete! The King Ches performed another near impossible task by winning three distance events in two days (he really deserves the Bowerman Trophy this year).

While all Ducks can revel in the superiority that Oregon showed over some great SEC teams, it is already time to ponder the upcoming Outdoor track season. In an interview that he gave yesterday, I think that coach Johnson made it pretty clear that most of the Oregon team will be taking a short break, focus on schoolwork and then start into another "building" phase of training with the aim to peak again for NCAA finals. It seems to me that quite a few of those who represented Oregon at the Indoor championships competed in as many as four or five meets this Winter and could use a short break. I doubt we will see them in much competition until around the end of April.

Some Ducks, however, may well begin competing in the late March meets. We may see the emergence of the multi-eventers (Ashlee Moore, Liam Henshaw), and the big-guy throwers (Danielson, John Nizic, Jhett Janis, Cullen Prena, Amir Patterson, and Drake Brennan) at some of these early Outdoor meets. It will be interesting to see how guys like Drake Brennan (all 6' 8" and 280 pounds of him) develops in his first outdoor season at Oregon.

To put it in perspective, it appears that the cupboard is full and the coaches, as always, seem to have a master plan to develop the young athletes, while peaking the contenders for the big meets at the end of the season....the GOLDEN AGE continues, and the glitter has more shine than ever. Let's just sit back and enjoy the two new National Championships for awhile, then strap ourselves back into our seats for the great Spring/Summer ahead at Hayward Field. GO Ducks!
