I have reversed my course

One of the things that was most compelling about Oregon was the history that the coaching staff carried with them. Perspective if you will. They were all good quality men for the most part and people we could all be proud of. I was seriously hoping to retain several of them for many reasons.

After seeing the attitude and excitement on many levels of these coaches, and we haven't even been out of the dead period for long yet, makes me think this was the right long term move. Greatwood, Neal and Campbell are huge parts of the ducks history and who I wanted to see back, but I've been put at ease. Just saying I'm grateful for them, but pretty happy with the direction so far. Stepping off soap box.....

OT: Mark Banker will no longer be DC at Nebraska

Nebraska: Defensive coordinator Mark Banker will not return. Banker spent two years at Nebraska and previously worked at Oregon State with Mike Riley from 2003-14. In addition, the school says director of player personnel Ryan Gunderson has accepted an on-field coaching job at another school.

From coachingsearch.com

Just found it interesting as Banker has coached with Riley for 14 seasons between OSU and Nebraska. Nebraska is also losing their Safeties coach Brian Stewart, who is leaving to become the DC at Rice.

Thought it was noteworthy due to the past connection to the State of Oregon, and that Nebraska is an opponent next season.

Popo Aumavae...

The hiring of Joe Salave'a is definitely a huge help to keep the three-star lineman in this class. He could still take other visits but this hiring is a major thing. Here are his comments:

"He's my uncle. And losing the coaches that were one of my main reasons of committing to UO allow him to fill the gap and more and I know he's a great coach."

Is Oregon a 'Sleeping Giant'?

Odd to consider this of a program that has enjoyed the success the Ducks have. Over 200 wins the last 20 years, only two losing seasons in the last 20. Played for the title just two years ago.

During Oregon's run, I can remember this being said of UCLA or ASU. Occasionally USC or UW were also thought of as potential college football powerhouses if only the right coaching staff could be hired. It happened for SC with Carroll. UW now has Pete.

Hiring the right staff, I think, is the term that best describes Oregon's situation.

A great deal was made of the previous staff's longevity and I can remember a time when they were praised as some of the very best at finding diamonds in the rough. I believe that longevity, somewhere along the line, turned to complacency. Complacency is the arch-enemy of sustained success.

It is my thinking that our long time coaches got far too comfortable in their routines and were either unable or unwilling to build the program beyond what is has become, some 20 years after Bellotti replaced Brooks. From a certain perspective, that complacency could be understood....many of those guys had already helped build Oregon from doormat to, arguably, a Top 10 to 15 program. In the early years of that build, the facilities were nothing. Maybe it's a matter of, 'their work has been done'.

This new staff is recruiting to Oregon in a different way. With no leftover ways of thinking about Oregon Football they have a chance to wake the giant, to use Oregon's facilities and Nike connection in recruiting in ways the old staff never would or could.

So, will it be just a quick nap for Oregon football or are we in for a long night?

Oregon may not look broken, but head coach Willie Taggart insists a rebuild is needed

SI has a great article out today that is well worth the link chase.

“I was talking with [mentor] Jack Harbaugh and he said the same thing: ‘You’ve gotta be excited, cause you’ve seen it already,’” Taggart says. “To be honest with you, some of it’s worse than what we’ve been through [at other schools] … I think there are guys on the team that can lead, but they don’t know how. That’s our job, to teach them.”

**UPDATE**Welcome the new S&C coach of football!

Will it still be Radcliffe? If so I think that is a terrible idea.. the Ducks have proven time and time again that they need to get bigger and stronger to be able to compete with that of the SEC/Big-10.

Also, the dude is the size of a professional Jockey. I get that he knows health and nutrition, but when you look at the S&C coaches for UW, USC, Alabama, Ohio State etc.. hell even USF.. they are guys that are meat heads in the gym and breed physical players.

Jim Radcliffe needs to stick to other sports and stay far away from football IMO.

Thoughts?

Cristobal update - Sort of

Okay, so here is what I got after checking with sources this morning. Florida sources tell me that they are pretty sure he is not going to UF; the thought is that Oregon is the 'leader in the clubhouse' but there is the belief he wants to see if any of the open HC jobs (2) are a good fit...

At this point, Bama sources say he is not likely to return, but none of them are feeling particularly talkative this morning...
