On Saturday, the score doesn't matter

This game should go a little bit like Stanford's tune-up over Rice,

The score will be lopsided, though last year Southern Utah hung in against Utah in the opener before winding up losing 24-0.

Keep in mind Oregon won the first game of the Helfrich era 66-3.

What truly matters Saturday is getting a win and HOW the Ducks play. Coming off last year's 4-8 season fans want to see hunger, execution, effort, discipline and communication.

There will no doubt be first-game errors, but there should be signs that the focus, preparation and attention to detail has improved.

The main objectives are to win, play good football, have a lot of players see the field and come out healthy for Nebraska.

What are you hoping to see for Oregon's opener at Autzen against Southern Utah?

Taggart 8/28 press conference notes...

Today Taggart held his first game-week press conference as head coach of the Ducks. He will be doing these on Mondays throughout the season.

  • Frosh WR Johnny Johnson has been "on fire" the last few weeks. "He's just been different." He has been catching the ball and playing at a very high level and that is what earned him the start.
  • Tyree Robinson, Brady Breeze and Taj Griffin are injured and that is why they are not on the two-deep
  • Taggart wants Autzen to be a "snakepit" and a "weapon" this year. Remembers playing here while coaching at Stanford. Said it was wet and loud.
  • Scott Pagano is out of his boot now but no timetable for his return.
  • Says team voted Freeman and Mondeaux as the captains.
  • Says backup QB is pretty even between Burmeister and Alie. They're not sure who they would use at this point.

That row of 4-stars sure looks pretty

On the DSA home page there's a commitment list. How impressive it is to see a solid wall of 4-star commitments. 14 of them. All the page can hold. Likely to be 18 by December. Maybe a couple of 5-stars at the top of it.

It's unprecedented. It's a tribute to energy, vision and hard work. It's exactly what Willie Taggart said he would do on the day he came here.

Certainly it's a lot of fun to follow and cover a story like that.

Now let's see if they can make good decisions in the 4th quarter, keep a team focused, make good play calls and win some ball games.

There are Dennis Dixon days until Duck football. Wow.

Thoughts and thanks

First, I want to thank everyone here at Duck Sports Authority for all of their compassion, thoughts, prayers and support. We had my dad's celebration of life last weekend and it went really well; there were a lot of friends and family with some funny and remarkable memories shared.

It really meant a lot to me that AJ was able to make it to town and say some kind words about my dad.

That being said, I have been trying to stay in the groove as much as possible, but have been pretty sidetracked, especially over the course of the last two months. Tomorrow in Flock Talk, I talk about the impact of Malik Young's commitment, but also shared my thoughts on another big story from this week.

I shared some of my thoughts on my blog tonight. I don't pimp it much here, but it is easier to share the link than to copy and paste what I wrote, so here you go:
