Which way go the Ducks, and their fans?

In 5 games as the Arizona starter Kahlil Tate has been sensational, listed among possible Heisman also-rans after racking up 930 yards passing and 1087 rushing. His game log is astounding. No one has really stopped him:

Tate's rushed for 327. 230, 137, 146, 161. He has 9 TDs on the ground and 8 through the air. He's been intercepted 5 times.

At 6-3, Arizona ranks #22 in the country, the surprise of the conference. The Ducks have a bye week to heal while the Wildcats face a Saturday night game against Oregon State, 7 p.m.PT kickoff.

The schedule is a huge advantage for Oregon. Arizona won't get off the field Saturday night before 10:30.

An upset win would be a huge push forward for the 2017 rebuild.

Will Justin Herbert really be ready this time?
Can a young Oregon team make a leap forward in their pivotal 11th game of the year?

If they can reach 6-5 going into the Civil War, they have a chance to have a lot to feel good about going into next season, particularly with the recruiting class they're putting together.

Have you tuned out for the rest of this season, or do you think CWT and crew have a reasonable chance of putting together a strong finish?

Curious about next year's running back rotation

It will be tough saying good-bye to Royce Freeman, who this weekend passed Herschel Walker on the NCAA Division One all-time career rushing list, the 13th highest total in the history of college football. That puts Freeman in College Football Hall of Fame territory in what has been a remarkable Duck career.

The Ducks only have Rolls Royce for two more games, assuming he follows the recent trend of premium RBs sitting out their team's bowl game to begin preparation for the NFL draft. Hope fans send him out with a great curtain call at the Civil War.

The next question is, what's the UO running back rotation going to look like next fall? Kani Benoit completes his eligibility also.

Have to think Tony Brooks-James becomes the feature back. Darrian Felix had some good carries against the Huskies, and C.J. Verdell's highlight tape pops off the page. Cyrus Habibi-Lokio looks like a tough, physical runner. Travis Dye has had a monster senior season at Norco.

Can this committee replace Oregon's all-time leading rusher? Can TBJ stay healthy, relied upon for 20-25 carries a game? Will Taj Griffin slide over from the slotback postion to take some of the load at tailback?

It does help that the Ducks will have better balance in their Gulf Coast Offense with the return of a top flight quarterback complemented by an impressive squad of fleet receivers. They won't have to endure 8 in the box all next season, and with some true field stretchers, Oregon should be much more explosive. Very tough to score when the only option has been to grind out drives.

What's the recruiting development you'd most like to see coming out of the bye week?

Oregon coaches are hitting the road this week as part of the bye week. Jim Leavitt has been in Utah and Arizona, and they will no doubt hit some high school playoff games this Friday.

The early signing period is about six weeks away. What is your number one wish for this recruiting surge and this period of firming up and pushing through, the stretch drive of recruiting? Who would you like to see the Ducks lock up? Who do they need to lock up and firm up? Who is their biggest get or toughest reach?

For a long while the consensus dream close to this class has included Penei Sewell, Devon Williams, Chase Cota and Talanoa Hufanga. Who would you add to that list? How many of those are still realistic? What is Oregon's biggest remaining position of need? Are Adrian Jackson and M.J. Cunningham the stud inside linebackers the Ducks need to complete their defensive makeover?

No game this weekend so we have some free time to kick around this bye week assessment. It's been understandably quiet on the recruiting front since Shough's commitment (a big one) so it will be interesting to see what CWT and staff have planned for their big finish.

TRAACK

He is from Eugene's Marist High School. He is projected as a decathlete. I talked with a local Eugene track coach who knows him well. He told me that he has lots of potential, and that he is an outstanding kid. He is a good jumper and sprinter. He is well rounded and a good fit for the multis. He played football at Marist, but forewent this season to concentrate on track. This one could be a sleeper.

No matter the QB, you have to throw the ball down the field

Very disappointing performance. My hatred for the Huskies is back in full force after almost feeling sorry for them the past 13 years. Huskies are the only Pac 12 team that I would under no circumstances root for them to win, unless it somehow directly benefited then Ducks.

Towards the end of the game, Burmiester threw a pic where the receiver was only 25 or 30 yards down the field and wide I open. He threw the ball about 15 yards and it was intercepted. He had a 30 yard pass to make and threw it 15 yards. I'm sorry, but any decent high school QB could have made that throw. I understand he is a freshman, but how can they give a scholarship to a QB who can't make that throw. Never seen anything like it.

Having said that, I blame Taggart for not letting him throw more. You have to do it even with a bad QB. Note to coach Taggart. There is no one in this league you can beat when you will not throw the ball down the field at least 8 or 9 times a game. There is no team you can beat when you go 3 1/2 quarters without calling one play action pass on first down.

Play to win coach. Don't play to run the clock out and keep it close. I would rather throw 10 pics and lose by 80 than to play a style of game where the score is closer, but there is no chance whatsoever to win
