GOING PRO (MENS'S BB)

I know that this has been a topic every year and maybe, especially this year with Wooten.

Interesting article that kinda lays out the good and bad (mostly the bad) of so many kids declaring for the draft early,,, when they are not ready (my take).

Mentions Wooten as one of them.

ooops...wish I could edit the title...lol

Maybe This is Why BB Players Leave...? Very Boring...Read at Your Own Risk

OK...Friday night early...got a Hall Pass 'cause my gal is out golfing with friends from work...so I'm having the Prime Rib with libations at my local pub and trying to figure out this whole NBA draft...One and Done...etc...thing.

My Rivals Term Paper for this year.

Here is what a little Local Pub Research (LPR) yields:

From SI:

"Beginning in the 2017–18 season, the National Basketball Association added two-way contracts between NBA teams and their NBA G League affiliates. Unlike in the NHL, these contracts are not offered to every aspiring NBA player, but only to undrafted players whom a team would like to keep "on retainer" without having to sign to a full-time contract. Each NBA team can have up to two two-way contract players per season, and are typically considered to be "16th and 17th men" on a roster.[5] Excluding time spent before and after the G League's season begins and ends, players on two-way contracts can spend up to 45 days in the NBA while spending the rest of the season in the G League.[6][7] As of the 2017–18 season, players earn $75,000 while they are in the G League and roughly $204,000 if they spend the maximum 45 days on an NBA roster. The two-way contract system benefits young undrafted players who do not want to play professional basketball overseas, as well as those who believe an organizational investment in them is beneficial to their development. Some player agents are concerned about this system, because in exchange for guaranteed employment at a higher salary than a typical G League player, two-way players give up the freedom to be called up from the G League by any NBA team, possibly one with intent to sign the player to a 10-day contract, which could eventually lead to a full-time NBA roster spot sooner than with a two-way contract."

OK...cool..that's obvious...maybe...maybe not..sounds like another crap shoot.

I understand it but I would think that this is where the agent/lawyer comes into play.

One thing though...I believe that these kids have egos...they have been stars since first grade and everybody pumps them up.

I believe that they think that they can make the NBA and if they don't...then ...well...$75K per year minimum (could be $204K or more) as a 19-year-old ain't bad....and you know what...they are right ....that's pretty damned good in real world, non-athlete, non-college graduate dollars.....hell...that's good for the average college grad...so its hard to fault these kids in a strictly dollars and cents way that is, perhaps, in the long term, foolish.

Wow! Lots of variables here.

But...it seems to be the way of the world:

"There was a notable flood of talented undrafted players who were quickly snapped up by teams after the draft ended—don’t expect this to change anytime soon. A ton underclassmen stayed in the draft this year and didn’t get picked, but this is less a cautionary tale and more a sign of where things might be headed. From talking to teams and agents, the market for two-way contracts and undrafted deals has been even more competitive over the past day or so. Many people think the NBA may eventually end up giving teams a third two-way roster slot at some point down the road, to create more job opportunities, strengthen the G League, and allow for more creativity in talent development on whole. It seems prudent."

Cool...except as of this post...neither King of Wooten have been picked up as free agents...though about 15 other players have been.

I expect that King will be picked up soon.....but who knows?

I probably will get an "F" for this term paper because I have not provided an answer to this situation...but stay tuned.....:D

Flock Talk: Patience

Today in Flock Talk some OL recruiting thoughts including Brenden Coffey, TJ Bass, Brandon Hernandez and also the reality that I don't see anyway Dillon Johnson picks Oregon - unless Mississippi State pulls his offer or tells him he won't be a RB for them either.

Also, I am not overly concerned about the 'lack of hype' this year versus last year; when the 'big time elite' prospects do commit, the energy will be back in a hurry.

Flock Talk: Patience.

Chicago OL talks Oregon official and final decision

Oregon will end up being the last school to host three-star Chicago OL Marcus Harper for an official visit, as he has cancelled a planned trip this weekend to Iowa State. Harper talks about that official visit to Oregon, which started on June 10, in the article below and also details his decision plans:

The tape on Nassir Little for Blazer Fans

This ESPN analysis is really good on Little, but fails to point out how much improvement he showed over the season. I guarantee you the "shortcoming" part of the tape are 75% 1st half of the season, and the "strengths" are 2d half.On just about any other team his improvement would have been even better, but he was never going to start behind Johnson.Note the bottom line, "he's a lottery pick".....but he wasn't. At 25th a steal for the Blazers.Another guy who would have blossomed as an All ACC 1st team starter as a soph., but lands in Portland.

Bol to Mile High City...

From Oregon Communications:

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Oregon made it three consecutive NBA drafts with at least one player selected when freshman center Bol Bol was chosen by the Miami Heat with the 44th overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft Thursday night. Bol’s draft rights were then traded to the Denver Nuggets.

“I’ve been dreaming about this my whole life and it feels pretty good,” Bol told ESPN. “I just want to prove everyone wrong and be the best player I can be.”

Bol, who became the first-ever Duck to be drafted by Miami, follows the footsteps of another Duck post to the Mile High City, Blair Rasmussen, who played for the Nuggets from 1986-91. Aaron Brooks also had a short stint with Denver in 2014.

The Ducks are now one of just seven programs nationally that has produced five or more NBA Draft picks over the last three seasons. Oregon is joined in that elite echelon of college programs by Duke (11), Kentucky (10), UCLA (6), Villanova (6), Florida State (5) and North Carolina (5).

“It means we’ve had some really talented guys who were with us for a few years when you think of Dillon Brooks, Jordan Bell and Tyler Dorsey who got us to a Final Four and I’d include Chris Boucher in that group as well,” said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. “Building on that success, we’ve had some players who have decided to go one-and-done because of their talent level.

“Whether it’s staying here and developing or coming in here and being part of our program for a year, we’ve been very fortunate to work with some really good young men who have represented our school at a high level and won us a lot of ball games.”

Overall, Bol is the seventh draft pick during Altman’s tenure at Oregon.

He is the 52nd all-time NBA Draft pick in UO history.

The 2019 Draft marked the first time Ducks have been selected in three consecutive years since 2002-04 when Frederick Jones went to Indiana (2002), Luke Ridnour went to Seattle (2003) and Jackson went to Cleveland (2004). The 2017 Draft saw three Ducks drafted off that Final Four team: Bell (Chicago), Dorsey (Atlanta) and Brooks (Houston). Troy Brown Jr. (Washington) was the Ducks’ lone selection in 2018.

BOL BOL, 2nd ROUND/44th OVERALL PICK, MIAMI HEAT/TRADED TO DENVER NUGGETS

Prior to suffering a foot injury in December that caused him to miss the remainder of the 2018-19 season, Bol led Oregon in scoring (21.0 points per game), rebounding (9.6 per game) and blocks (2.7 per game). He reached double figures in all nine games he played and recorded a double-double in four of those games. Bol is the first UO freshman to open his career with back-to-back double-doubles. He scored a season-high 32 points with 11 rebounds against Texas Southern. Bol was named to the 2018 2K Classic all-tournament team after scoring 26 points against Syracuse and putting up 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks versus Iowa.

“Bol is a very talented young man who will continue to grow as a player as he gets stronger,” said Altman. “He has some unique skills that will allow him to have a long and prosperous career.”

Tre Edwards, 2023

Was told by a coach this morning that incoming freshman, Tre Edwards at Mater Dei, Chula Vista (same school as CJ Verdell), is very likely to exceed all of Verdell's records at that school. He is already 6-1, 210 and described as lightning fast. SC and UCLA are already on him and I'll bet CJ and the Ducks are in his ear as well. Interesting to see how he develops.
