Mario Cristobal's epic rant

I'm not a big fan of John Canzano. He's done several chop jobs on the Oregon Ducks over the years, wanting to be a controversial and contrarian figure like Howard Cosell was in the '60s and '70s.

Even so, he had a great interview with Mario Cristobal on Monday night. Canzano asked the coach if he'd made notice of the struggles that Willie Taggart and Chip Kelly have had since leaving Oregon, if he's considered how good he has it as coach at UO.

Oregon's second-year head coach responded:

“This is like, how can it get better for someone like me? The way the circumstances and how it unfolded, the amount of gratitude, the amount of feeling blessed, therefore the investment in return, the dedication and commitment in return... come on brother, I exhaust every ounce of what I have on a daily basis for the love of the game and also for being thankful and having gratitude for this opportunity.”

"We’re surrounded by awesome people (at Oregon). These are awesome dudes... one thing I know for sure, nonsense and untruthfulness never, ever worked for me or my family, parents, everything. Everything we do, the foundation of everything, is based on trust and truth.”

Then he added something.

“I know I kind of went on a rant there, brother, but there’s a lot to that.”

Revenge on the Nerds?

Stanford has dealt Oregon some tough losses over the years. They stole one in agonizing fashion last season with a 4th quarter and overtime comeback that was brutally assisted by two huge blunders by the Ducks, fumbling away the football at critical moments.

I can still see Zach Ertz juggling the ball on his chest as his shoulder slides out of bounds. I can still see De'Anthony Thomas joyously prancing toward the end zone as a Stanford safety takes an angle on Marcus Mariota.

I remember those two fourth quarter blocked punts that cost Joey Harrington and the Ducks a shot at their first national championship game.

Stanford is down this year. They're vulnerable. They've had two crushing losses on the road, to USC and UCF. Through three games they're averaging 21.3 points a game and they don't have a pass play over 27 yards, 3 total TD passes versus 2 interceptions. The defense is giving up 6.39 yards per play, a total of 841 yards through the air, about 280 yards a game.

David Shaw is perhaps the conference's best coach, and no doubt his intelligent players will gather together and rally for a visit by an old nemesis.

Provided the Ducks are ready, this is a great chance to pour dirt on a frequent tormentor. A loss would make the Trees 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in conference, giving Oregon a three-game lead on the first of the preseason contenders.

Hopefully Justin Herbert is the quarterback with a hot hand. Cardinal give up about 3.9 yards per carry on the ground. In 3 games, they have 4 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, the Ducks, 10 and 25.

Cristobal Monday updates...

Notes from his press conference today which is currently LIVE.

  • Cam McCormick out for the year. What a shame for that excellent player and person.
  • Juwan Johnson practiced yesterday (Sunday) and looked good, but MC cautioned that he knows it has been a tease with him
  • Coach said that he expects Austin Faoliu and Bryson Young back this week after they were held out for the Montana
  • Graham's x-ray's were negative
  • Habibi-Likio was suffering back spasms on Saturday night
  • Schooler and Pittman are both expected back after the bye week, but that means they are both out for Stanford as we expected
  • Jake Hanson is still being evaluated

Jonah Miller update

What's up Oregon Fans!! Here to give you all a quick update on Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, AZ) Class of 2021 OL Jonah Miller
Login to view embedded media Watched him last Friday night and he looked incredible. He's listed on Maxpreps as 6-6 290 but he looks every bit of 6'8. Big, strong, and extremely athletic for his size. I broke down what I saw from him including some clips in this article here https://arizonavarsity.rivals.com/news/arizonavarsity-breakdown-salpointe-catholic-68-desert-edge-34

After the game I talked to Jonah about his recruiting. He told me Oregon and Texas have definitely made the best impressions so far. He's visited both campuses and he called Eugene amazing and said the atmosphere was crazy in the best way possible. his running back Bijan Robinson (causally rushed for 430 yards and 6 TDs Friday night) is a Class of '20 Texas commit, but I didn't get the impression that that will make much of an impact in his decision. He's going to choose the place that's the best fit for him. Oregon is definitely one of the schools at the top of his list. Maybe Jaylan Jeffers can convince him down the road.
