Here are the thoughts from the national recruiting team on his commitment from today's story:

"The picture of Jonathan Lawson’s recruitment is a little blurrier than the one depicting that of Fudge. On Wednesday evening, Lawson will choose either Oregon, Alabama, Arkansas, Vanderbilt or Iowa State. The Ducks are the smart money here, but it wouldn’t be wise to wager much. Alabama is very much alive. Any other choice would bring some semblance of surprise."

My thoughts

Been a bit preoccupied lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been thinking about the Ducks. So, since I like to share the misery of my thought process, here is who I think we'll see as starters:

OFFENSE
Shough
Verdell
Pittman
Williams
Johnson
McCormick
Jonah T.
T.J. Bass
Forsyth
Sala
Jones

DEFENSE
Thibodeaux
Scott
Faoliu
Funa
ISM
Flowe
Sewell
Wright
Lenoir
B. Williams
Pickett

This, in my opinion, is the most talented roster ever at Oregon and it is led by one of, if not definitely, the best overall coaching staffs we've had.

Football awaits us. Basketball is on the horizon. And jackets are worn in the morning again. Life is good!

Jaylen Smith

With the new roster out the guy from my Mother’s ancestral homeland has come in a whole lot bigger than when he signed. He is now listed at 6’4 292 lbs. Jaylen is from Ashokie. This is in northeast NC., that is where some of the original settlers, born in Virginia, ventured down to NC and settled in the late 1600s.
It is an area that is sparsely populated. There aren’t any cities. I wonder what level of coaching he has had... I do not have a clue.... but he might be a guy with a big upside. On another note.... when you get that close to the coast in NC the cuisine goes back centuries. There are few restaurants but the dishes that are served in some of those homes is just ridiculously delicious. It is no wonder that Jaylen weighs 292 lbs. It is almost a secret cuisine that this country has had from early colonial days.

RIP Neal Steinhauer

I never met Neal. In the old days competitive lifters and some track throwers trained in the Eugene YMCA gym. It was there that I first remember hearing his name. He used to train there. By the time that I was training there he had moved back to California.

I moved from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz Co. in the mid 90s. One day I heard from an Oregon Alumnus in Santa Cruz that Neal was living in the county. If I ever met him or passed him by, I wouldn’t have known it because he would have been much older than his photos from his athletic competition days.

He was one of the great throwers in UO history. Neal held the University Shot Put record from 1967 to 1982. He still sits at second, and was only surpassed narrowly in 1982 by Dean Crouser.
I consider Neal to be the best all time Duck shot put thrower. I am saddened to hear of his passing.
