Legendary Oregon high school coach Barry Adams has passed away.

The Oregon high school basketball community lost a legend this week, when Barry Adams died at 88.

Adams’ career of coaching basketball in Oregon spanned almost 40 years, compiling a 653-315 career record and two state championships. He is No. 8 in Oregon’s all-time coaching wins list.

Adams’ first job as an Oregon head basketball coach was in 1960 at Nestucca. He coached the Bobcats until 1967 before moving to Lebanon from 1967-1972.


After that, Adams coached Hillsboro from 1973-1981. He then moved to Glencoe, coaching the Crimson Tide in 1983-1984 and leading the team to the 1983 AAA state championship with a 50-40 win over South Salem.


Coincidentally enough, Adams then moved to South Salem and coached the Saxons from 1985-1999. He led South Salem to the 1996 4A state championship, a 53-39 win over Barlow.


His lengthy tenure as a basketball coach in Oregon also means that he was involved with mentoring many current Oregon coaches.


“Barry was so good to the many coaches he willingly mentored throughout his career and retirement,” wrote former Westview basketball coach, and former Oregon Basketball Coaches Association President Patrick Coons in an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive. “You can attach his name to so many successful HS basketball coaches in the state.”


In 1998, Adams was inducted into the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame and he was honored in 1999 as the National High School Athletic Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.


He was voted Oregon’s boys basketball coach of the year four times. He also coached football for 19 years in his career.


Adams was originally from Lake Oswego and went to Western Oregon University, where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He was inducted into the Western Oregon University Hall of Fame in 2004.

The slow and somewhat chaotic start w/ the OL might be attributed to several factors including experimenting with a walk on center and the unexpected Bedford injury, but I recall people asking pre-season whether it would require any adjustments in the OL scheme and some "getting used to" blocking for Gabriel, a southpaw. Looking back at the first three games I'm thinking there might be something to it.
I mean watching Cornelius get beat by UI's DE's in the first game and the OL allowing sacks in the first two games was baffling. Cornelius was pre season All Am in some polls and it was pretty shocking to see that.
Also in that ID game when, due to poor OL play, Gabe was forced out of the pocket he did seem to always to roll left. Then starting in the BSU game and really looking much better vs OSU he could stand in the pocket for some time and there were a couple of times in the OSU game where he was actually able to roll right.
They are doing much better as a unit, but if you have never blocked for a left hander maybe that DID have something to do with it, ie, an adjustment period.
I'd be interested to hear from people who actually know more about FB, and I wonder if it makes any sense?

How is everybody, don't post much any longer but always lurking!

One thing that I hope will help with the early struggles is we (team) no longer are the talk of college football and all the "press clippings" reading should be gone, if there was any of that. And, I for one always think there is no matter what a coach or team says! Hopefully the attention to detail has improved and they have learned that they have to do more than just show up....:

A little slower week news wise with a bye this weekend, but here is our weekly roundup:

We finish up our look back at the win over Oregon State with a defensive report card for Oregon. If we had graded only second half, A+, but we also had to grade the first half!

This week in the Wednesday War Room, thoughts through three games, why polls don't matter, and some recruiting notes.

The four-star tight end from Center Valley (Pa.) Southern Lehigh committed to Michigan in July but he has a whole round of visits coming up.

Olesh will be at the Georgia/Alabama game, Ohio State at Oregon, the WhiteOut game at Penn State, the USC at Michigan game this weekend and a date to be determined at Notre Dame. He remains committed to the Wolverines.

Otis Davis who won the gold medal in the 400 meters and was on the winning 4 x 400 meters relay team in the 1960 Rome Olympics, passed away on September 14th, 2024 at the age of 92. Otis was the first Gold Medalist from Oregon. Initially, Davis was on the basketball team but asked Bill Bowerman if he could come out for the track team. Bowerman asked him which event he wanted to compete in? Otis is quoted as saying "where do you need me". After the Olympics, Davis stated he was glad Coach Bowerman didn't say the Pole Vault! Davis was a transplant from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the SEC had not Desegregated. Davis served in the Armed Services before heading to the University of Oregon. Thanks for all you contributed, and living an exemplary life.

For perspective, the number grade is PFFs score. I use that as a sort of guide, but the letter grades are mine using my eyes to adjust what PFF thinks. As an example the scores for QB were more like B+ on a letter scale, but what I saw was clearly an A (I doubt I will give an A+ unless I see something crazy like 35-35-600 yards and 8 TDs.

With that said, here is my report card for the offense versus Oregon State.
