SB: Bats come out for sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon combined to score 26 runs over two games on Sunday, finishing off a home-opening weekend sweep of Boise State and Portland State with a pair of run-rule victories to move to 13-1.

Game 1: No. 6 Oregon 10, Boise State 2 (6 innings)

Oregon blasted four home runs while getting another strong performance in the circle in a 10-2 victory over Boise State in six innings to open the doubleheader.

How it Happened: Boise State struck first, getting a run in the top of the first off Oregon starter Brooke Yanez, but the Ducks answered immediately with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Haley Cruse led off with a single before coming around to score on an RBI single by Allee Bunker, then Mya Felder scored Bunker on a groundout to give the Ducks the lead.

The Broncos answered with a run in the third to tie it up at two, but once again Oregon responded, putting up a four-spot in the home half to take a 6-2 lead. Cruse led off the third with a solo homer, and was followed two batters later by Bunker who hit a two-run shot to make it 5-2. After that, Alyssa Brito singled, Terra McGowan doubled and Cid drove in Brito on a fielder’s choice to put Oregon up by four.

Brito tacked on another run with a one-out solo shot in the fifth inning before Rachel Cid came around to score later that inning via an RBI infield base hit by Ariel Carlson, stretching Oregon’s lead to 8-2. Felder came up with a runner on and one out in the sixth and deposited one over the left field fence to end the game, scoring Hanna Delgado who led off the inning with a single.

Game 1 Notables: Half of Oregon’s 12 hits went for extra bases … The Ducks homered at least four times in a game for the second time this year … Bunker went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a homer and a double … Felder drove in three runs as well, going 1-for-4 with a homer … Cruse, Delgado and Brito all turned in multi-hit games as well … Yanez improved to 6-0 on the year with her win, going five innings and striking out seven despite walking five.

Game 2: No. 6 Oregon 16, Portland State 0

Oregon scored early and often, fueled by a nine-run first inning in a 16-0 win over Portland State to cap off the doubleheader sweep.

How it Happened: The Ducks sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning on the way to going up 9-0. Brito opened the scoring with an RBI single to right center, driving in Bunker to make it 1-0 before Cid drove in two more on a bouncing ball up the middle that resulted in a double. Vallery Wong came through with a seeing-eye single back through the box to score two more, making it 5-0. The two freshmen in the lineup capped off the scoring following an RBI groundout, with Delgado and Brito each coming up with run-scoring doubles – Delgado’s scoring two runs – to finish the big inning.

Oregon capitalized on some miscues to score two more in the second inning and go up 11-0. Wong reached on a sacrifice fly and error on the right fielder to drive in the first run, before Bunker got aboard on another E9 that scored Wong.

The Ducks poured it on late, adding five more runs in the fourth inning thanks to some big hits by some players off the bench. Tehya Bird delivered her first career RBI, driving in fellow freshman Gabby Herrera with a pinch-hit single after Herrera opened the inning with a double off the bench. Delgado followed Bird’s single with a three-run shot to center field, stretching the lead to 15-0. Maddie Hopper then came up and roped a pinch-hit solo homer the other way to cap off the scoring.

Game 2 Notables: The shutout was Oregon’s fifth of the season … Oregon recorded seven extra-base hits, highlighted by five doubles … Delgado went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and her first career homer … Wong drove in three runs, finishing 1-for-1 with two runs scored … Cid and Brito each had a pair of RBIs while both went 3-for-4 … Makenna Kliethermes picked up her first career win, tossing three shutout innings with six strikeouts … Jordan Dail and Raegan Breedlove each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

On the play today compared to yesterday…

“I definitely wanted to see a different look from us today compared to what we saw yesterday. I really like that the team accepted our challenge and they responded.”

Freshman Hanna Delgado

On creating their own energy without having fans…

“Not having fans, it does make a difference. But our energy in the dugout has been really great. I think that is what is keeping us pumped for the games. It would be great to have fans, but I think our energy all around and team chemistry has really been doing the job.”

Overall Notables: The Ducks finished the doubleheader with 13 extra-base hits, including six home runs and seven doubles … Nine different players came up with an extra-base hit while the six homers were hit by six different players … Ducks pitching combined to strike out 17 batters over 11 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits … Oregon’s 2020 freshman class combined to drive in nine runs while going 11-for-16 … Delgado finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with five RBIs, four runs scored, a double and a homer … Brito went 5-for-7 with a pair of RBIs along with three runs scored, a double and a homer … Cid was 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

On Deck: The Ducks remain home for four games next weekend at Jane Sanders Stadium.

I really want to see baseball become successful at Oregon again and they won a big game yesterday ... but look at these stats !

A good college team needs to average at least 9 hits per game. The ERA for these guys is in the ballpark of my hope for less than 5.00 per game but they have faced only one good team so far and allowed them 6 runs. the 3-2 record is about what I'd predict looking at the schedule but the way they got there is disturbing.

I'm hoping things will come together for them quickly.

A look at where Oregon and other teams stand in his recruitment:

Thanks Adam, with 3 of the WR PSAs on the board not more than 3 hour drive from the campus I just don't see someone 3000 miles away wearing a Duck uniform. I'm talking about Clemons, Merriweather, and

SB sweeps double-header

Back on the field at Jane Sanders Stadium for the first time in nearly a year, Oregon swept a doubleheader against Portland State and Boise State behind more dominant pitching to move to 11-1 on the season.

Game 1: No. 6 Oregon 4, Portland State 2

Brooke Yanez turned in yet another dominant effort in the circle to lead Oregon to a 4-2 win over Portland State in the first game of the doubleheader. She struck out 12 with just one walk in a complete-game effort while Hanna Delgado delivered a huge two-run single in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference.

How it Happened: The Ducks scored single runs in the third and fifth innings for their only runs of the game. Haley Cruse was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning before stealing second and moving to third on a fly ball. Allee Bunker drove her in with a sacrifice fly to right field, putting Oregon on the board first. Cruse accounted for the second Oregon run of the game as well, driving in Hanna Delgado with a hot-shot RBI double through the left side to stretch the Ducks’ lead to 2-0.

Delgado added two huge insurance runs in the sixth inning with a clutch two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0. After Mya Felder singled and Terra McGowan walked to lead off the inning, a flyout and a stolen base put runners at second and third to set up Delgado for the big two-RBI base hit.

Portland State made things interesting in the top of the seventh, putting the leadoff runner on before getting to Yanez for a two-run homer to make it 4-2. She would buckle down after that, though, striking out the last three batters she faced to finish off the victory.

Game 1 Notables: Yanez struck out double-digit batters for the fourth time this season … She has also fanned at least six batters in all six of her appearances on the season … Her 12 strikeouts are also tied for the second-most she’s had in a single game in her Oregon career … Delgado turned in her first career multi-RBI game.

Game 2: No. 6 Oregon 3, Boise State 0

Oregon pitching dominated once again, as Samaria Diaz and Makenna Kliethermes combined to toss a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over Boise State in the doubleheader nightcap.

How it Happened: Oregon jumped in front from the get-go in this one, scoring three in the first inning. Cruse led off for the Ducks with a solo shot to left field to make it 1-0 before Bunker singled and moved to second on an error to set up another scoring opportunity. Felder cashed her in with a single to left field, making it 2-0, before Alyssa Brito came through with a two-out RBI base hit to drive in Felder.

Despite the hot start, the Ducks’ offense went cold after the first inning, however, the pitching staff picked up the Oregon hitters with a dominant effort. Diaz retired the first nine batters she faced and allowed just three baserunners in her five innings of work.

Diaz was lifted in the sixth inning after giving up back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Kliethermes replaced her in the circle and got the first batter she faced to foul out on a bunt attempt, before striking out the next. She walked the next batter to load the bases with two outs, but picked up another strikeout to end the inning and keep Oregon in front, 3-0.

Game 2 Notables: The shutout was Oregon’s fourth of the season … Diaz has not allowed a run in 14 of her 18 appearances as a Duck after striking out five over five shutout innings tonight … Kliethermes recorded her first career save, fanning four over two hitless innings of relief … Cruse turned in her team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-3 with her second homer of the season.

Quotable: Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi

“I thought Samaria did a good job of pounding the zone. Towards the end they started to hit a couple of balls hard and so I felt like it was a good time to make a change and give them a different look. I loved how Makenna came in, threw strikes and really moved her ball through the zone; loved how she closed that game out.”

Overall Notables: Oregon pitching now has an ERA of 1.64 on the season with 99 strikeouts against only 14 walks … The Ducks combined for 21 strikeouts to just three walks over 14 innings in the doubleheader … Oregon scored three more runs with two outs in the doubleheader, meaning the Ducks have scored 42 of their 71 runs this year with two outs in an inning … Felder recorded a hit in both games and has now hit safely in five straight … Cruse went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs over the two games.

On Deck: The Ducks will play the same two teams again on Sunday, starting with Boise State at 12:30 p.m. followed by Portland State at 3 p.m

Flock Talk: Into the Abyss

First, apologies. Been so extremely busy preparing for my quarterly business review then annual performance appraisals, along with class, I have just been extremely busy the first couple of months. Did 35 appraisal meetings this week alone, but I think I should be back to normal here the rest of the spring and into summer and (hopefully) able to be more around the boards.

Today in Flock Talk I wondered what the future of college football might look like. IS a reckoning going to fundamentally change the sport? I think it just might.

A little recruiting info on RB

An excerpt from a GA article on 247 "Branson Robinson ... Georgia has recruited the four-star from Mississippi well and is in a great place in his recruitment at the moment. Alabama, Oregon, LSU, and USC are also high on his list. " Just something about my favorite 2022 recruit, as I know you've all noticed. Hope isn't dead yet.:)
BTW if this is against policy please delete it, I'm just stoked about our chances with Robinson, especially with Woodiel heading the recruiting department and his , Coach JM, and Coach Mastro's reported connections to MS.
