WSU beats USC, How Cool is that?

I wondered if USC and Darnold were gonna be exposed, as once again...overrated. Falk is a gunslinger and it's nice to see him and those guys do so well way out in E WA. Falk seems like the best QB in the P12 at this point. Mike Leach is a character, and sure seems to get the most out of his 2-3* PSA's. It's hard not to admire what they have done in the last few years. The Ducks' schedule is starting to look tougher than expected before the season, including today.

Pac 12 Primer: Week 2

Week 2? But I thought it was week 5? Well, I am using conference play as the week number and this is the second full week of Pac-12 play.

As always, there are plenty of intriguing match-ups. Perhaps the best is the lead off game this weekend.

USC @ Washington State

There will be plenty of talk about offense - it is the Pac-12 after all - and in this case it might be rightly so. Obviously Mike Leach's offense puts up a lot of yards and points. But he is really starting to get to where he was at Texas Tech.

Early in his Cougar tenure, he was all pass, no run. It's not that he did not want to run, he just did not have the hogs on the line or the work horses in the backfield. Now that he does, he has really begin to turn it around. Not only that, his defense is really, really good. Alex Grinch has done a fantastic job turning average players into standouts and he is sure to start getting some head coach looks.

USC has all the talent int he world. I liked Sam Darnold out of high school and saw him as 'the one that got away' for Oregon coaches. The rest of the offense is just as good. Stephen Carr will be an All-American and potential first round pick. Deontay Burnett is great. The USC defense is another all-star lineup. But USC has been somewhat udnerwhelming early. Maybe they are still trying to find their groove.

I just like the home team here to pull the upset.

WSU 35-USC 31

ASU @ Stanford

The Cardinal got the monkey off of their back last week with a big second half against UCLA. ASU had perhaps their 'best' game of the early season and it took a lot of help to win. The replacement of Keller Chryst is probably the best thing that will happen to Stanford football this year.

Like always, the Stanford defense is physical, just not quite the same calibner as they have been in the past. With a talented ASU offense coming to town, I expect the Sun Devils to present some problems for Stanford, but nowhere near enough to pull off the upset. Bryce Love will run all over that defense and the Cardinal will win easily at home.

Stanford 45 - ASU 31

Colorado @ UCLA

I thought Colorado would play better a week ago - they did not. The Buffs played out of their mind a season ago until the Pac-12 title game. this year they have the best WR group in the conference - but seem to have some of the same issues as a year ago. Not a lot of depth, and the departures from teh defensive staff have really hurt. I like Mike MacIntyre and think he is the right coach there.

UCLA is a hot mess. if not for Josh Rosen, they would be the second worst team in the conference. They can score points, but it would appear that they will have trouble stopping anyone.

I like the Colorado running game better, and the wide receiver group better. Clearly Colorado has the better defense so I go with the visiting squad here in a slight upset.

Colorado 38 - UCLA 35

Washington @ Oregon State

Do I really need to say anything here? The worst thing that could have happened to Oregon State was beating Oregon at the end of 2016. Their offense is worse; their defense is worse, and the best team in the conference is making the trip and bringing practically all of Seattle with them.

Washington 58 - Oregon State 10

Cal @ Oregon

Obviously this is a big game for both teams - and for very different reasons.

I previewed this game for Duck Sports Authority briefly, but let me give some thoughts here. Oregon struggled last week in their ability to be prepared for two road games in a row. I think it is not a coincidence that the team started classes and that the rigors of playing a Pac-12 team set in a little bit harsher than expected.

The offense showed that they can move the ball, but Justin Herbert struggled some with misreads on pre-snap and made some poor decisions early in the game. The team made fantastic strides to take a fourth quarter lead, but youth and a lack of discipline really caused some problems. I like them to rebound some this week with fewer mistakes.

Cal, though, is bringing in former Duck Justin Wilcox and former Duck OL coach Steve Greatwood. One thing I know for sure - they want this win as as they will want any win the rest of the season. Greatwood is not happy about the manner in which the prior staff was treated and Wilcox wants to prove his position. This will be a game more physical than expected and weather may play some role.

I like the Oregon running game a lot more - Cal has Patrick Laird and Oregon has Royce Freeman. That is a big advantage for the Ducks. Oregon will be missing one of its most dynamic playmakers with Charles Nelson likely to miss another game while Cal sees their best athlete Demetris Robertson return.

But I think the Ducks have more playmakers, a bit more diversity and a defense that is better than a year ago playing with fire. I have the Ducks here in a hard fought, physical battle. my pick was Oregon 35-27; but it could be even lower scoring. I still like the Ducks at home in this one either way.

Huge OL offer to Hawaii sophomore.

From HawaiiPrepWorld.com

St. Francis sophomore offensive lineman Ope Laloulu landed his first scholarship offer from Oregon today, Saints coach Kip Akana said.

Laloulu, the starting left tackle for the Saints (5-2, 3-1 ILH Division II), is 6-foot-7 and 340 pounds.

“He can run too,” Akana said. “He doesn’t fit the bill of big for nothing, I can tell you that.”

Laloulu is the 11th known sophomore currently in Hawaii with at least one scholarship offer.

He was offered by Oregon defensive line coach Joe Salave’a according to Akana.

HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL/JUCO FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Ahead of schedule?

This team wasn't 4-8 last year just because of coaching. Mariota showed he and other talented players could win a lot of games with the same coach. In winter most people believed improvement was the goal and that bad losses would still happen. So the question I have is whether, at this point, the team is ahead of, behind, or on schedule with your hopes for improvement BACK THEN. Not at the start of the season or after the hype of great recruiting and energetic coaches on the trail. But is this team where you would have hoped they would be after 4 games back during the doom and gloom days of december, January, and February. I know I was hyped up and changed my expectations for the time line of improvement of this team after the first few games and that made the asu loss harder to swallow. But last winter, 3-1 would have been on schedule to me.

Anthem Protests

What will happen saturday?

Will the NFL actions translate to CF?

My suggestion is play "America The Beautiful" if it is necessary to play anything. At least most people know the words and they are "singable". Or a John Phillip sousa march if rousing is needed.

Oregon/Cal is a likely match up to bring this about. Ie, Berkeley and Eugene.

Ducks open up as big faves over Cal...

I'm not too sure what to think of this one. Oregon (3-1) will go into the game against Cal (3-1) as two touchdown favorites. You look at Oregon's three wins and none of them were overly conclusive about how good this team is. Then at ASU we saw that with enough mistakes and sloppy play they can lose to anybody.

Still, we've all noticed the improved defense and the fact the offense can really go when it is clicking.

Cal also has three wins which really don't tell any story:

35-30 win at North Carolina. But North Carolina is a very bad football team.
33-20 home win over Weber State. I imagine Big Sky Weber covered the spread on that one.
27-16 home win over Ole Miss. Ole Miss has two wins this year: South Alabama and Tennessee Martin
20-30 home loss to USC. This of course is the crown jewel of their season so far. But how good of a loss is it?

The one thing we know is that they are better coached than they have been recently.

So if you are a bettor, do you take the Ducks and give the points?

Blame coaching

I know this won't be popular but this is 100% on the coaches.

My biggest fear with our hire of Taggart that I had was we hired a guy who can talk the talk. Can recruit like crazy and can't coach worth a damn.

Our coaches jus got their asses handed to them by ARIZONA STATE. Let that sink in for a second. The coaches got their asses kicked by ASU!!! Todd Graham has been out coached more times than I can count and he just kicked this shit out of our staff.

They are young and energetic. They say all the right things and to make people happy are all over Twitter and other social media.

I had one question when this staff was hired. Can they coach. So far after four games that answer is a resounding no (on offense...defense is making improvements across the board).Oh sure they can recruit and do all the pretty stuff. But what matters is results in the field and I for one am not seeing it. Specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Did we run the same three plays over and over all night long?

I know some here are so in love with this staff because of how much "juice" they bring. How about turning that juice into actual teaching and improvement on the field.

I know how much they scored and all the stats. Only one stat matters and that is the final score.

They barely beat a Nebraska team that will be lucky to survive the season. An awful Wyoming team and Southern Utah. This is not a good football team.

Did we hire coaches or salesmen?

Flock talk: Money for Nothing

Some thoughts today on the scandal; the edge for week 5 and finally an official visitor!

One thing of note - I had heard that Nick Pickett might not play this weekend; after checking in with some more reliable sources, there is still some concern he may not be able to play this weeke. So far, it seems nothing long term, just something on which to keep an eye.

DSA Tailgates - What you need to know

Okay, we are less than a week out. There are a lot of new members around here and we have this 'hunch' that game day excitement will return once again this season.

DSA has been hosting a tailgates since 2005. I took over the task at a great time - 2009 - we saw some really great tailgates and grew the concept; then we got kicked out of the parking lot (we had been using a General Admission pass for parking) in 2011. Things started to taper off after that.

We love, and I mean love, having members stop by and chit-chat before the game. Last season, a season which many people grew tired of quickly, we started to get a huge assist from one of our members; a pass in the parking lot.

So here is the concept for this year. We are going to use my DYS space (223) across the street from the stadium for most of the games, BUT, we are also going to try and get the 'big' games in the Autzen parking lot, so I will post the details each week.

For those that do not know, our space in the DYS Parking lot is on the other side of the 'old' practice field (now called Essig Field). It is not easy to see, but definitely worth the time. We have a TV running with football on all day; we have hand crafted burgers, dogs and brats, beer, soda, chips, salsa and will create 'special' courses for the big games. In the past these special courses have been things like bacon wrapped BBQ shrimp, jambalaya, yakitori, etc.
