Hepa's Stock Rising Over Summer

Not sure if this was posted yet or not, highest rated HSBB PSA for 18. Prediction, Texas. In the olden days, he'd be a no brainer offer for UO, but we already have 1 good big coming in, several on the roster, and a chance at Bol, Shittu and Brown.Unless there is a mass exodus, there won't be many roster spots.

Penei Sewell has torn labrum, will need surgery

Report from Ryan McDonald of the Deseret News in Salt Lake:

Desert Hills senior Penei Sewell has established himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the entire country, but his playing status for the remainder of the 2018 season is somewhat in question.

On the final day of the prestigious The Opening finals in Oregon earlier this summer, Sewell sustained an arm injury that, until earlier this week, hadn’t been diagnosed. According to his father, Gabriel, an MRI showed that Sewell sustained a torn left labrum, and he’ll need to have it surgically repaired.

Thunder head coach Carl Franke figured that meant the 6-foot-4 Sewell, who is considering programs such as Alabama, Oregon, USC and Utah, among others, would perhaps be out for the entire season, but Sewell wants to play through the injury, and he did so in the Thunder’s season opener Friday night, a 45-44 overtime loss to Jordan.

3* 2017 SG Devonte Doutrive

This guy doesn't show an offer, but he says Oregon is in his final 3. I'm not sure what was going on, maybe he had to get academics in order? Anyway, he's rated higher by some sites and plans to visit UO, The Zag's and ...I forget the 3d. I guess it's also possible his offer is contingent on some other player(s).

Duck position update...

I spoke with Coach Woodie about two of his guys at the Duck position, Junior Fotu Leiato and sophomore Lamar Winston. They will be the top two guys manning the new Duck position, a hybrid LB/S. Here is what coach had to say about them.

Lamar Winston

"He is starting to understand the defense. When going in to a new situation, when you’re learning new things you can be somewhat hesitant. Giving a kid like that confidence, keeping it simple allows him to play faster and that is what he is doing.

"A lot of times people look at prototypical guys; 6-4 and up, 240-pounds. But he is quick, he is violent, he’s strong pound-for-pound for his size. So you can get away with a guy that may be undersized in people’s mind, but in my mind he could play base, he could play the Duck, he is just so active. A guy like that who is so active makes up for lack of size."

Fotu Leiato

"Those two guys, they are mini me’s. They give fanatical effort, technique, discipline; they just can run. Like I told them ‘if you’re wrong, you’re right if you’re hustling to the ball’. When you press ‘play’ you see them going sideline to sideline and that is what we want out of the defense.

"Coach Leavitt is always talking about running, running to the ball. Those guys, they definitely run to the ball. We are blessed to have two of those caliber kids on our football team. We could do a lot of different things. We can go from base to nickel and those guys can do both.

"Obviously, Lamar is a little bigger. But Fotu makes up with his speed and his aggressiveness"

Justin Hollins update...

I spoke with Coach Woodie about Justin Hollins. He was banged up in the spring. When I spoke with him earlier in camp Hollins said he is very happy to move back to his "natural" position of OLB. Here is what Woodie had to say:

"He is working. He is consistent. Hollins is coming along. Obviously he did not have spring to participate but he was a student of the game. He has the size and ability. He is pushing for a starting spot. Right now we haven’t really determined who is going to be the starter that is going to line up against Southern Utah but he is definitely competing.

"We want to set the edge. We want to play the run first. A lot of times you have to be careful talking about elite guys like him being a pass rusher because sometimes he will want to pass rush on run downs and get himself out of the play and create gaps. Right now we are just teaching him to play the run because we know he has pass rush ability. If he gets that down he is going to be a force.

"Hollins coming along. He has only been practicing really for two weeks because in the spring he was a little banged up with injury. He is showing that he is going to make an impact."

Practice Reports

I am going to go out on a limb here and assume I'm not the only one reading Moseley's practice reports. A couple of things have stood out recently. First, it is great to finally see Alex Ofodile's name popping up in these practice reports (and with the first team no less). It seems that he has been trying to get healthy since is first day on campus. As one of a only a few big bodied receivers he has the potential to be an important player in this offense. Second, for all they deserved fanfare about Thomas Graham it seems like to the two most commonly mentioned freshman players (in a positive sense) are Sampson Niu and Isaac Slade-Matautia. These guys are locks to play a ton and I predict one of them will be starting next to Dye by year's end. There has been lots of talk about defensive improvement, and when your defense ranked in the 100s improvement needs to be everywhere but more than anywhere it needs to start at the LB positions.
