If JL leaves...

While I am in the camp of hiring Cristobal and holding onto Arroyo and Leavitt, as well as the rest of the staff, if Leavitt leaves we could get a strong look at our next DC, Andy Avalos of Boise State. A young, energetic coordinator who leads a very aggressive defense for the Broncos. 8 times this year giving up 14 points or less. Plus he has coached LB's and the D'line and is known for being a very good recruiter to a program like Boise State. He is definitely one to keep our eye on. I am not sure if Joe would want the DC job but in the event that JL leaves and Joe doesn't want it. Avalos would do well.

Then we go get Chris Marve from Vanderbilt to coach our LB's. He is widely considered a very good up and coming defensive mind and a great teacher at that position. Extremely diligent and aggressive. Again, a good young recruiter as well. Just my thoughts.

2018 Sun Bowl

Since we could be rebuilding (again) next season a PAC 12 Championship might be a little too lofty of a goal, therefore my personal hopes and dreams point to a 2018 Sun Bowl vs. a rebuilding FSU.

I'm nearly 100% positive that despite it being in El Paso Oregon would sell out their allotment.

Cristabol should be named head coach before this weekend

I really like some of there other candidate mentioned. Sumlin and Leach would both be very intriguing.Justin Wilcox played with my son and he a is a great guy, a duck, and seems to be an excellent coach. All these guys would be good candidates, but here are the reasons Cristabol should be hired now
1)By far the most important reason is to keep this class intact. As we saw with Slick Willie, there is no sense thinking 5 years down the road.Everything is subject change. We have a chance for a program changing class RIGHT NOW. The best way to keep most of them is with Cristabol

2)) The players want him and this is a huge thing. They have respect for him or they would not be pushing for it.Players aren't stupid. They know if he is head coach material. He can concentrate on recruiting rather than keeping the team in tact.

3) Unlike the last guy, Cristabol seems to love Eugene and the program in general. It caught my attention when it was reported after a win this season that Cristabol got in the tunnel leaving the field and put his fist up in the air and said" I love this place!" ( Note to Mullens- STILL NEED A HUGE SHORT TERM BUYOUT FOR WHOEVER IS NAMED COACH -40 million the FIRST YEAR)

4) Keep more coaches that are here. Leavitt might be hurt, but at least some of the other coaches, who have been recruiting and have relationships, will stay.(I would offer Leavitt 2 million per year to try to keep him though)

5) Cristabol was named the top recruiting assistant in the country a couple of years ago. This is the most important attribute needed in coaching in Eugene.

Naming Cristabol before this recruiting weekend would be a huge shot in the arm for momentum for both recruiting and the players already here.I repeat, keeping a top 10 class is the number 1 priority. The truth is ,all of these guys can coach. Its a toss up so take the guy who can keep it rolling

Old Timers, need help id'ing an ex player

I've been acquainted with a big guy at my gym for about 20 years. We never officially met, but had that cordial gym talk. I knew he played football for Oregon but I don't know when. I would guess he is between 48 and 65. (I know, big range, but he has kept in good shape.) I ran into for the first time since Rocky signed with Oregon, and we had a nice talk about it all, and he introduced himself as Todd Groll. That is the best phonetic spelling I can do for his last name. He's probably 6'3 and pretty stout, so I doubt he was a placekicker. He actually does a lot of work in Oregon still and seems to do something with Nike. Can anyone help a brutha out?

Long Term (rose colored glasses) Hypothetical

1. Hire Cristobal and hold on to 2/3 to 3/4 of the staff (as many as possible-only guys who seem to have gone twitter silent are Pimpleton and Big Joe).
2. This should mean we can hold on to, at least, a similar percentage of the previous 25 commits, while adding from the list they are already working on. Including a large number on 12/20 to relieve some of the anxiety.
3. Cristobal leaves in 3 years for a dream job close to his childhood home after we have won a natty, or, at least, been in the playoffs and are consistently back in that conversation.
4. We have a head coach in waiting in place (Arroyo for example) and smoothly transition with most of the staff remaining.

Notice how this scenario returns us to the model we followed for so many years. The key is making the correct choice with each 'within' hire and restocking the assistants with great recruiting up and comers. This would prevent us from blowing the whole thing up every time. My biggest issue with the 'stepping stone' deal is which step are we, one of the last steps or an early step? BTW heard on college football live D. Howard and the Georgia guy (younger, short hair) rip Willie and say Oregon is the second best job in the league after USC. One even called us a destination!

Funny. FSU fans somehow think WT was classy they way he left...

Wow. Wonder where they are getting their information. Why are so many players and recruits steamed saying he did not tell them the truth? How could he tell us for days that there "was nothing to decide" and "why wouldn't I be the coach next year?"

I actually have never seen it handled worse in all my years of doing this. And on December 5 with a bowl game in 11 days? And signing day 15 days away? After only being here 11 months?

Yep, very classy.

Tyrell Crosby, Best PAC 12 O Lineman

Apologies if this is old news, but in the midst of Taggart talk and turmoil, it's comforting to know that excellence exists in our program that was here before Willie and will continue after we finally expel him from memory.

Tyrell Crosby has been voted the best PAC 12 O linemen by the defensive linemen opposing him, winning the Moriss Trophy.

Mods please delete this if it's old hat. But I find Crosby to represent the kind of development kids can expect here with our coaching staff.

Who's your pick to coach Oregon next year?

  • Mike Norvell

  • Jim Leavitt

  • Justin Wilcox

  • Kevin Sumlin

  • Jeff Tedford

  • Mario Cristobal

  • Marcus Arroyo

  • Lane Kiffin

Results are only viewable after voting.

At this hour it looks like the bus has left the station, and you can't get a seat unless you are wearing garnet and gold. Where should Oregon turn for its next coach? What should the criteria be? How important is continuity, recruiting skill, system, personality, or Oregon roots?

Reality of all this happening in Ducks favor?

Read AJ's and Scott's articles, awesome works guys!

Here's my question then, what is the most realistic version of what will happen as it pertains to staff for next year? Not just MC and JL but, all the other coaches, as some of the current guys and recruits specified that the current staff stays and all is good.

Is it a matter of some switching some titles around and bringing 1-2 more new guys into the fold?

Lots of questions, just trying to get a clear eye on future.

Things are looking up guys, I feel 1000x better about our situation now and if we can keep all/MOST of these guys, life will go back to normal.

Lastly, the Do Something "mantra" needs to go, along with it's creator!

Coaching Search

You all remember me as the "idiot" that was calling Taggart a Con Artist, Sociopathic Narcissistic Liar and an incompetent coach over a week ago and I had my posts deleted or cancelled and called all sorts of vile names and even banned from one board. I could see this slow moving train wreck coming a couple of weeks ago(look it up).

I wrote this letter to Mr. Mullens concerning the Coaching Search and the best outcome.I hope a few of you will believe I know what I am talking about this time.

Mr. Mullens:
You have to move fast on you coaching search or use will lose all or the recruits. A lengthy search process with a search firm is all well and good but you won't have any team left. You can still salvage this program if you hire Jim Leavitt as HC, make Make Mario Cristobal Assistant H.C. All but the Florida recruits and coaches say that they will remain on board if you do this but you have to do it fast. Taggart was an incompetent coach so if you hire a good O.C.(there are many good ones that would love to coach at Oregon) ,I believe Oregon will potentially have a better team than they would have with Taggart.
Sincerely,
John McDonald

Some of you are taking this waaaaay too personal

Let’s be honest here, Taggart made a decision that was bound to be made. Let’s just imagine that he stays and crushes it at Oregon for the next two - three seasons. Sure, he would have gotten a raise or two but that’s not stopping an SEC team or UF, FSU or in Cristobal’s case Miami from making a run at him.

I’d hope that we all knew when these guys where hired that Cristobal was / is going to get another shot at Head Coach somewhere in the South and that Leavitt was / is going to also get another shot, especially if they both stuck / stick around and continued to build a solid resume. If you didn’t accept that as part of the deal when Taggart hired them, you my friend were being pretty naive.

Fact of the matter is these bridges where bound to be burnt at some point, perhaps they’re getting burned before we all expected but none the less they’re potentially getting (or will eventually be) burned and no one should be surprised.

Even if we keep Cristobal AND / OR Leavitt ya’ll better expect that we’re going to go down this road multiple more times. IDC who’s named HC, we’re going down these roads at some point. Even if one of them ends up as our HC, someone bigger and with ‘more ties’ or ‘more tradition’or ‘closer to home’ or quite honestly someone with more money will eventually come calling.

Welcome to a) big time football and b) the business side of it.

We, as a fan base, were TOTALLY spoiled by the ‘keeping it in house’ way. The simple fact is as soon as the House was cleaned out this was / is bound to happen.

IDC what some of you think Nike doesn’t make us an elite program - does it set us apart? Sure, but it doesn’t makes us an elite program and unless we win 2 - 3 National Championships we won’t really be considered one. Hell, Bill Moos was being brutally honest and regardless of whether or not we think he was taking shots at us - he’s right. Nebraska has more appeal than we do and let’s not get confused here - Nebraska isn’t considered an elite program as of now but they STILL have more appeal than we do.

I’m not saying we need to settle, I am saying we’d better manage our expectations with the next hire. That is unless it’s someone like Peterson and probalby Wilcox who we all know probably wouldn’t bolt at the first really big opportunity. Sumlin, yep. McElwein, yep. Cristobal, yep. Leavitt, probably. Dredford, probably not, but he has no business even being mentioned for the job.

Some other names that we need to ponder are Koetter if he were to be let go from Tampa, Baldwin - terrible hire but he probably wouldn’t bolt, and believe or not Stoops if we’re willing to do what FSU wasn’t and that is agree to a short term contract with a HCIW situation. I literally think there’s Zero chance that Stoops calls but the FSU guy didn’t think he’d reach out to them either, so you never know.

Edit: Simply for the lols I’d actually like to see Gruden’s name be seriously considered. He’d be a terrible hire but the entire state of Tennessee might collectively vote to succeed from the Union (again) if they thought that we could even possibly land him. Same with Frost before he signed his Nebraska contract. The entire State of Nebraska would be on suicide watch. Hell, Peterson’s name even being brought up (which is entirely possible) would have the leg humpers ready to call up the National Guard and invade Oregon.

The Legend of Willie (per ESPN)

Read the article on Taggart's 'meteoric' rise to coach of the seminoles, but be ready to laugh or throw up when you do. It had to be written by his press agent. I believe the part about going home, especially after the death of his father, but the piece overall is ridiculous. It didn't mention anything about his mantra of family. If he is the father then he ran out on 85 kids. It didn't mention anything about face to face lies to players, recruits, and the press (Mullen said FSU contacted both he and Taggart last Thursday). I don't see how any of the PSA's recruited would follow him to FSU after this display. I believe Taggart will never coach outside the south again. He should remember a line from an Allen Toussaint song covered by Little Feat in the 70's: "the same people you step on on the way up, you might meet up, on the way back down'.
