Take time to find and hire the right coach

Taggart leaving really sucks, and I get the anger. I also get the fear and anxiety over losing some good recruits and good assistant coaches. But now is not the time to be short sighted. We need to do our due diligence and hire the right coach. No recruiting cycle is worth missing on the right coach.

We will lose recruits and coaches. That is a reality. But some good recruits and some good coaches will likely stay. And we can replace those coaches with good coaches. A new good head coach can bring in good coaches. He can also keep many of our current recruits and bring some of his own.

Panic and knee jerk reactions are a huge mistake. If Cristobal is the best candidate then hire him. If it is Leavitt hire him. But don’t hire either because you don’t want to lose some aspect of last years team you liked.

I am confident that those in charge will approach the situation in this way and I will be patient with them to do the job the right way.

Infuriating listening to milk toast Mullens!!

Why not question him on his two terrible hires?

Here is what really pisses me off. When asked if he would have hired Taggart or done anything differently, if he knew then what he knows now, he pretty much said "No,I don't think so" He still doesn't understand that any coach he hires must have a toxic buy out the first few years!!
Do we want to trust this guy to screw it up a 3rd time?

Fire this A....hole!!

Mullens press conference notes...

Here are my notes from Rob Mullen's coaching search press conference.

  • When Taggart told him he was quitting. "He reached out to me sometime right after lunch."
  • Mullens said Taggart told him "it was a family decision, pulls at my heart strings.”
  • On the clock: "These things take twists and turns there are no specific timelines."
  • On the coaching search: "We have a plan and we will execute that plan." They will use the same search firm they used for the last search to provide logistical support.
  • "We have an outstanding staff. We have an outstanding group of assistant coaches. It’s just a way it worked out from a division of duties that Mario became interim head coach. Mario is the interim head coach He will be getting back to Eugene tomorrow. It’s business as usual with Mario at the helm."
  • On Leavitt/FSU rumors: "No one has mentioned that to us. The staff would remain in tact until Dec. 16th. Nobody has mentioned anything to me about Florida State and Jim."
  • Contract extension was indeed offered to Taggart, multiple times: "There was a contract extension offer before the civil war and substantive contract negotiations up through yesterday."

Oregon statement on Taggart's departure...

University of Oregon Director of Athletics Rob Mullens announced today that head football coach Willie Taggart has informed the university that he has accepted the head football coach position at another institution.

Mullens appointed co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Mario Cristobal as the interim head coach and has launched a nationwide search for a new head coach.

“We thank Willie for his efforts at Oregon, and we wish him and his family all the best in the future,” said Mullens. “I am grateful to Mario Cristobal for his willingness to step up and lead our program through our upcoming bowl game.

The University of Oregon is a high-caliber academic institution with one of the premier college football programs in the country, and we are confident that we will find another outstanding coach to lead our tremendous group of student-athletes into the future."

Coaching circus: Crunch time Tuesday

9:03 am Update

Coach Taggart confirmed to be in Eugene. Clarity should not be too far away.

5:15 am Update

For those of you hoping that Taggart was going to stay at Oregon, today is the day your grieving process can likely begin.

To be clear: Nothing is final.

Taggart has not talked to his players, has not informed the University formally nor has he or anybody authoritative uttered a peep about the situation. But from the folks we have been talking to, it's time to initiate the coaching search sequence.

Coach is back in Eugene today after canceling his in-home visits with recruits while in Texas. Why would he do that with only two weeks left before early LOI? Wouldn't those be crucial appointments to keep? Isn't there a tight timeline given Oregon's December 16th bowl game...11 days away?

Will the news that he will be leaving Oregon after less than a year on the job happen today? That is quite likely. Everything is lining up and the silence is deafening.

You know we hate to be rumor-mongers but all signs are pointing one way and none are pointing towards anything else.

The last confirmed Taggart sighting was Monday at QB commit Tyler Shough's house. Coach Arroyo was there as he will likely be Shough's position coach in 2018. Coach Taggart was all business and despite the 'O' flashing, reportedly was on his way to meet with FSU following this in-home. *Bonus points to the Shough's dog for the solid photobomb
