Does the Oregon defense need a nickname?

On social media many fans and even Rob Moseley of goducks.com are casting about for a potential nickname for the Duck defense.

In terms of performance, they are certainly nickname-worthy. During the team's 5-game winning streak they've allowed just one touchdown in 63 possessions while holding 5 straight opponents to single digits. That's astounding.

They are:

1st in the conference in scoring defense at 8.7 points per game
1st in yards per play defense at 3.94 yards per play
1st in sacks with 21, 3.5 per game
1st in interceptions with 12, 2.0 per game
1st in turnover margin
1st in tackles for loss with 50, 8.33 per game
2nd in 3rd down conversions allowed, 35.3%
1st in Red Zone defense, 57% scoring pct., 14.3% touchdowns,

stats from cfbstats.com, for all games

What do you see happening from the Oregon defense over the second half of the season?
Can they keep this up?
Who do you see emerging and improving over the second half?

And what about that nickname thing? Earned, too soon, necessary or ridiculous hype?

Mariota benched, handles it with (what else?) class

Here's hoping MM gets a shot elsewhere with a better organization and situation as a free agent.

In the right system with the right coach, I still feel he could be a successful NFL starter. He could also have a long career (if he wants it) as a backup. Team guy, mature, intelligent, hard worker.

The ideal situation would be for him to rehab his image and playing habits while working under a veteran quarterback on a stable, well-coached team, perhaps Russell Wilson in Seattle, Tom Brady in New England, Drew Brees in New Orleans, Phillip Rivers in San Diego.

In all likelihood the Titans will release him after the season, I would think.

What do some of you longtime NFL fans think of his prospects?
Does it hurt Oregon recruiting at all that Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and now Mariota have had disappointing NFL careers? There were extenuating circumstances in all three cases, and a familiar pattern of bad team, bad offensive lines and bad supporting cast.
Does Mariota's setback have any impact on Justin Herbert's draft stock? I know it shouldn't, but perception sometimes equals reality in the No Fun League, even though Oregon's offense is completely different now.

Two Oregonians starting.Kirkland only a RS Soph? Did he have a brother, as I could swear he's been there longer than that? .
Then Molden is a a Jr. Both those local guys are having solid careers. I never got the impression UO recruited Kirk very much, Moldenn being a different story. I recall him saying something to the effect that he'd didn't get much of a "leadership vibe" or "team fist-all in" feeling when he visited. Maybe during the WT year. Anyway, he's have a hard time questioning the dedication and discipline of this D!

Jacobe Covington

Just decommitted from Washington. I have a blurb tomorrow in the War Room tomorrow; but @codytcameron tells me that right now this might be a case of someone wanting to play closer to home.

Right now, ASU, Arizona and USC might be choices; but let's see how the rest of this class plays out still; I think Oregon could get into it if Ringo is gone (as I believe) and there is some DB attrition down the road.

Jacob Eason

The Fox broadcast team for the Colorado game were having a hard time keeping Justin Herbert and Jacob Eason straight Friday night.

Noted Husky homer Brock Huard loves to reference Eason in evaluating Herbert, complete with backhanded compliments and passive-aggressive slights, obviously preferring the UW guy to whatever he sees from the Oregon senior.

The numbers show Eason to be much less effective in conference play:

vs. Conference: 4 games (2-2 record)
114 att 65 comp 57.0 comp % 791 yards 6.9 yards/att 3 TDs 2 INTS 120.49 rating 197.8 yds per game

vs. Non-Conference: 3 games (3-0 record)
89 att 69 comp 77.5 comp % 901 yards 10.1 yds/att 10 TDs 1 INT 197.40 rating 300.3 yds per game

9 of the 10 sacks allowed by the Huskies have come in conference play.

If the Ducks can get to Eason, they can rattle him and force mistakes. He's a much different quarterback under pressure.

A matchup to watch is Husky LT Trey Adams vs Kayvon Thibodeaux at defensive end
Thibodeaux hurried Steven Montez a few times but juuuussst couldn't get to him around the corner. The Buffs left tackle had a lot of success pushing him wide and around the quarterback.

More film study and working every day against Penei Sewell will accelerate Thibodeaux's adjustment to the college game. He's likely to have another breakout game any week now (2 sacks against Cal) and this week would be an exceptionally good time.

Another true freshman, Mase Funa, leads the Ducks in sacks with 3.

If Eason goes down four or more times, the Ducks win handily in Seattle.
