MBB: Ducks struggle in loss to St. Mary's

LAS VEGAS – After a slow start, the Ducks never got it going offensively and fell 62-50 to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday.

"Bad turnovers,” said head coach Dana Altman. “Bad ball movement on the offensive end. We just didn't make plays for each other. The ball is getting stuck, we are really having a difficult time getting it moving."

How it Happened: The Ducks struggled early, but held their own defensively to keep the game close. Oregon scored 15 first half points but trailed by only eight after forcing nine first half turnovers. Franck Kepnang got his first start of the season and scored five early points to keep the Ducks in contention.

The Gaels started strong in the second half and pushed the lead to 16, before the Ducks fought back and closed to within eight points. A potential and-one situation for Jacob Young was called an offensive foul with seven minutes remaining, which proved to be the turning point in the contest. Saint Mary’s kept their foot on the gas and hit key shots down the stretch, to keep the Ducks at a distance until the final buzzer.

Who Stood Out: Kepnang finished with nine points in his first start of the season and blocked three shots on the night. Eric Williams Jr. again led the Ducks in scoring with 13.

Up Next: Oregon will face Houston in the third place game of the Maui Invitational at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The game will air on ESPN2.

Utah first of a 4 game losing streak for Ducks?

Very possible.

1) Utah offensive line against Oregon defense was man vs boys. Oregon state better offensive line than Utah, and also better running back. Oregon state also tougher minded, much better coached, and much better QB play. Ducks have a chance but Beavers should win.

2) Ducks play in a crappy, meaningless Bowl against Purdue or some such nonsense. In bowl l games its all about who wants to be there. Ducks probably lose no matter who they play in a bowl game if they lose to OSU

3) Ducks open with Georgia next season. Physically overwhelmed by Utah and Oregon state .Lose to Stanford, who is one of the worst teams in the history of this conference? So no chance in hell they can play with Georgia

This Duck team capable of playing well. Everything changes if they beat the Beavers. I give them about a 45% chance to win next week because Beavers are simply a tougher, more physical program, but I won't be shocked if Ducks pull off a minor upset. If they do win, they are in the Rose bowl against a quality opponent like Michigan who will get their attention. In that scenario they are ready to play and have a decent shot. Bottom line is if they beat the Beavers they could go 2-1 next 3 games. I(f they lose to Beavers it will be a 4 game losing streak

As an aside, I am absolutely disgusted that Mario did not get his freshman QB's some experience in the 4th quarter of this game. No reason to have Brown in the game. Not just because he was terrible, which he was, but why not give Thompson or whoever is the present back up, some experience in a game that is a blow out? Its looking more and more like none of these freshman QB's can play dead. If there was any hope for any of them, you would think they would give them some experience. Number of stars a kid has in high school doesn't mean Jack s...t. Looks like there is no QB in the program that can play

After what we witnessed tonight I have a question.....

Not taking anything away from Utah as they kicked our butt in every part of the game. But trying to come up with a reason for what we saw tonight in such a big, important game my question is......
Could all the Pittman drama from this past week have had a bigger influence on the team than any of us could have imagined? I mean, look at all the body language issues and what seemed like guys kind of giving up some. Williams was very expressive with his displeasure in some of the passes tonight.

MBB: Ducks beat Chaminade in opening round of Maui

LAS VEGAS –Behind 14 second half assists, Oregon took down Chaminade 73-49 in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday.

How it Happened: A slow start for both teams saw the Ducks play most of the first half with a slight advantage. Oregon got their first double-digit lead following a Franck Kepnang dunk that put the Ducks up 15-5. Eric Williams Jr. carried the team offensively in the first half, hitting three three-pointers, but slow shooting overall left UO with a seven-point 29-22 lead heading into the halftime break. Despite shooting just 29 percent in the half, Oregon maintained the lead over Chaminade by holding them to just 24 percent shooting on the half.

“I did like how hard we played. I thought we were a little more physical in the second half, took the ball to the basket a little bit more like we wanted, had more assists in the second half,” said head coach Dana Altman. “So I thought our ball movement was better. We've got a long ways to go, but I thought we made a step in the right direction tonight.”

A 9-0 run got things headed in the right direction in the second half, the Ducks pushing it to a 38-24 lead to force a Silverswords timeout. Strong defensive play and teamwork were the stories in the second half, with the Ducks shooting 61 percent on 14 assists, holding Chaminade to 34.6 percent. De’Vion Harmon played a key role in stabilizing the team, netting 10 second half points. The Ducks pushed the lead to 20 and never looked back, giving some reserves a chance to see valuable minutes. Sophomore Gabe Reichle scored his first points of the season with a second half three-pointer, while Isaac Johnson finished with a career-best eight points on the night.

Who Stood Out: Eric Williams Jr. led the team with 14 points, followed by Harmon with 13. A balanced effort all around saw 10 Ducks score in the contest, seven of which scored eight or more points. Richardson dished out five assists to lead the team.

Up Next: Oregon awaits the winner of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s, the matchup taking place at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Dan Mullen is out at Florida

Even more than Miami, this is the potential landing spot for Mario Cristobal: salary, history, recruiting base, nearness to family, broad base of generous boosters, opportunity to build for a national championship and compete in the SEC.

Not saying he's going, but guarantee they'll consider him.

In some ways it's a better fit for his style and vision.

My wife works in mental health support. Their organization has a saying: "crisis is opportunity."

WBB versus USF

Third game in three days, once again with 8 ladies. No Sabally, Paopao, Rogers or Bixby. That is a top contending group with another anybody in most leagues!
Anyways, ran out of gas and an outrageous 25 turnovers led to the 71-62 loss. If we get the ladies back soon we are going to be good. Just nobody to handle intense defensive pressure w/o the two guards and of course Sabally is a huge miss!

13 point faves against the beavs.........

Any gamblers running to take the Beavs and 13? Be truthful........
It's going to take a much better effort as IMO OSU has as good of an OL as there is in the Pac and a very good running game. Nolan can throw it some also. They also have the 240 pound "hammer" on short distance to move the sticks downs. Hopefully the general is okay for the game.....injuries have passed the "unreal" stage!
One thing you can bank....the Beavs will play hard every play, can we match that?
Any possible way Thompson plays? I doubt it at this point, just asking for opinions.

In WBB news.....

Huge comeback last night to win a game (in the 90's) against Oklahoma where they trailed most all of the game. Played w/o Paopao, Rogers (both preseason all Pac-12 players) and super frosh Bixby. Today they are playing S.Carolina, number 1 in the land and add no Sabally (all Pac-12 player) to this list as I think she is just resting on the back to back after a huge game yesterday. Anywho.....we are getting trounced 44-26 at half. We can't match their quickness at all w/o PaoPao and Rogers. Lot's and lot's of turnovers. Only 8 ladies suited down...makes for a rough scenario!!
