Tailgate Today: Small set up

Tomorrow I will just be bringing beer and snacks. The reality is that there have been very few people coming by and our food waste has been pretty high.

When I first started hosting tailgates in 2009, we had upwards of 20-30 people showing up every week.

In 2014, tickets priced out a segment of our regulars.

In 2016, the 4-8 record sapped a LOT of energy from fans. 2019 saw a nice rebound, but the 2020 season essentially destroyed our tradition.

We have not really recovered the tradition of our tailgates. We have a somewhat older base here, most of whom watch from home.

Next year my wife and I will likely get a RV spot at the Boyscout or Masonic lot. We will still tailgate, but it will be more about chatting than massive parties. Everyone here is always welcome and I will post our spot, it just won't be the big production we have tried to maintain.

Husky Dad in Line behind me

At my pharmacy, waiting for my prescription, I noticed the large man behind me wearing a “W” purple hat. I had on an Oregon tee shirt. We gave each other a poker look… then I said we should not talk…. Then I turned around and laughed. His son is on the Washington football team, and his daughter has a water polo scholarship at Cal.

A couple of recruits from Santa Margarita High School in California are headed up for the game this weekend. The most notable is edge rusher LeVar Talley, who is a high three-star prospect in the 2024 class. Talley is an interesting recruit. He's got the size of a linebacker but is really impressive as a pass rusher off the edge. A lot of schools have already jumped into the mix with offers from programs such as Oregon, Georgia, Florida State, Louisville and USC already.

He's made in-season visits to Washington, Texas A&M and USC already. He camped with the Ducks in the summer.

His team is part of the Trinity League down in Southern California, which features teams like Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.

Competitive advantage?

In many ways this 'we aren't going to disclose the status of Nix because that gives Utah a competitive advantage' is as ludicrous as the thought that not announcing the starter put Georgia on their heels.

Dan Lanning mentioned how in the past his defense had to have three different game plans and that wastes precious resources.

Reality time: Utah has one game plan. That's really it. They are planning for a healthy Bo Nix. They will use the same game plan if he is limited. So still the same game plan.

What if Nix is out? The "Secondary game plan" took less time to come up with than this post took to write. That plan is simple: Stack the box and force Ty Thompson to beat you.

The ONLY advantage is really a lack of disclosure of the type of injury. And even that does not do much to change the game plan.

The only reason to keep Nix's status secret is because that is what DLs mentors did. It's legacy stuff. If Oregon had a backup that had shown he could make plays and be dynamic, maybe there is a completely different game plan, but the level of analytics available would seem to indicate that the Utah game plan will be about Nix.

6A Title Game: West Linn v Sheldon Will Be A Rematch

Both teams won last night. West Linn's QB Leavitt (WSU commit) had a big game vs CCHS, while Sheldon's DL(including our UO commit) kept Tualatin under pressure all night. Sheldon beat WL earlier in the season, so this is the rematch predicted by many. Not sure of any other P12 PSA's on the quarterfinalists, Might be a fun one to watch if it is streamed or even televised..

Ashton Porter

Other than Rodrick Pleasant, the other big notable visitor this weekend for the Ducks is former Northwestern commit Ashton Porter. The Ducks are making a hard charge for the Texas defensive end (things seem to be cooling a bit with Matayo Uiagalelei) and all indications are that Oregon has a really good chance of ultimately landing his commitment. Michigan State gained a lot of the buzz when he backed off his commitment to the Wildcats earlier in the fall, but Oregon offered him a few weeks ago and has quickly made up a lot of ground in his recruitment.

He's not going to announce a decision until Jan. 3, but this is an important weekend in his recruitment.

4-star CB Rodrick Pleasant eager for return trip to Eugene

Rivals250 cornerback Rodrick Pleasant has had his official visit to Oregon set up for quite some time now. The Ducks have been pushing to get him back on campus, and he set aside this weekend as the one he wanted to use for his third official visit in the process. So far he's taken OVs to Boston College and Cal, but the trip to Oregon is a meaningful one and could be the one that changes his process as a whole. He was on campus for the first time early in year, and he enjoyed his time with the Ducks. Now, he will return with family and have an opportunity to spend the whole weekend in Eugene.

He is planning to run track and play football in college, so he will again meet with both staffs this weekend. I spoke with him about the upcoming trip, and you can read the full update above.

"I'm excited for the visit," he said. 'Me and my mom we're going up there, and it's going to be something exciting. They've been wanting me up there for a while. I've been up there one time, and it was a great experience."

IF, I said IF Bo is out......

some believe he may miss the game versus Utah (NOTHING CONCRETE) but makes me wonder what the game plan would be w/o him.
I imagine it would be a heavy dose of runs but of course Utah would know that too. Thompson would have to make some plays with his arm (I imagine lot's of short safe passes) and a couple three with his legs for us to have a chance as Utah will score on us.
A big key is the health of the OL too.......if you noticed yesterday on the 20 play drive Alex was holding his shoulder some before the high snap that ultimately hurt our chances of scoring the TD.
Not expecting much from the defense (wonder why) as Utah is well rounded and good so the offense would have to play top notch with TT if Bo is out........thoughts?
