SABAN SPEAKS

sorry if this has been posted...

Saban:

"I want to be clear that wasn't the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed," Saban told ESPN. "I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your ass and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff ... that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program."

"I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Saban recounted. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field.

"So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years."

Saban said he also struggled with coaching churn and the need to almost constantly replace assistants. Meetings with prospective coaches became difficult as he couldn't accurately promise that he would be around the program beyond a handful of seasons.

Nick Saban reveals late factors in retirement from Alabama, wonders if process there 'doesn't work anymore'

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban knew a while ago that his time with the program was coming to an end. The 72-year-old Crimson Tide legend confirmed in a recent interview with ESPN that he began contemplating retirement shortly after the 2022 season and told athletic director Greg Byrne that he felt his coaching career was nearing an end.

Some info on Akili Smith Jr.

I was wondering how Jr. was progessing as it seems there isn't much discussion about him on this page. FYI he was just upgraded to the No. 1 Dual Threat QB by ESPN recently, I've seen a lot of discussion about other QBs and it does seem that the QB room is loaded, as it seems another QB (Longstreet) is looking at Oregon as well. With Adams, the QB fm San Anotoniom another from AZ, the walk on from Sheldon, as well as Jr. you'd think the 25 class wouldn't be looking for another QB.

Most intriguing Offensive position battles this spring?

Toay in the War Room I start an early look ast Spring camp and thought about some offensive position battles I had two that intrigued me the most (these are excerpts with more detailed toughts in the article):

For my money the biggest question is going to be the interior offensive line. Oregon lost two starters from the interior (Jackson Powers-Johnson and Steven Jones) and, though they have plenty of talent returning, seem likely to have some question marks.

I am also intrigued to see how the running back rotation shakes out. Based on everything I have heard, Noah Whittington is progressing very well in his recovery, but I would be surprised if they allowed him to go full contact at practice during the spring because, truthfully, there is just no reason to throw any additional risk at him for spring ball. That leaves Jordan James as the clear starter during spring ball. We already know what he can do so for him it will be about getting better at those areas Dan Lanning and Carlos Locklyn have set as priorities.

That leaves the questions at the backups.

What are your most intriguing storylines on offense headed into spring camp?

Duck Track Sending 11 to Nationals

It’s kind of unprecedented, but the men have only one qualifier. Many fans are shocked, dismayed and bewildered about this. I am not. The men’s program is young and has some talented incoming freshmen signed for next year. I have also heard that Oregon is recruiting more men sprinters.

In the meantime, I like the one man that we are sending…. Rafael Raap … Poor Rafael, one guy and only 13 women teammates to keep him company,
13 not 10 due to the relay teams!

Sabrina and Seth T'd OFF

Maybe the best shooters of all time respective to their gender. Sabrina moved back to the NBA line for this and still only came up short by 3. Hats off to both of them for taking this risk ('probably more risk for Curry, lol).

This weeks Flock Talk

Some good discussion there, but I am still waiting for someone to analyze the effect of the realignment on other sports, particularly women's sports. Title Nine is still with us. Will the national alignment just be for football and perhaps an occasional men's BB game and the rest of men's and women's teams just play a regionalized schedule? It is unlikely that we will see women's BB making many trips to Penn State or Rutgers. And, how will the NIL money be parsed out. The FB players get it all with nothing for the rest of the players in other sports? That might not hold up well in front of a jury with women on it.

Are there any expert opinions on the nity grity?
