Friday practice notes...

Not a ton of notes from today as I spent almost all my 25 minutes of open practice behind the lens of my camera. But...
  • Cristobal said that the team really hit the ground running today with this camp. He said that it seemed a more finely tuned operation than last year.
  • Troy Dye said the freshmen as a group look "ridiculous" I think he means good.
  • Herbert thought that this fall camp was starting out faster than last year because of all the work they put in the offseason in the playbook, etc. That was reiterated by many of the players I talked to today.
  • Sean Dollars was the only frosh I got to watch today and man, he may not get into the 2-deep, probably won't. But he is farther along than most every other freshman I can remember at RB. Maybe Royce was further along on Day 1 but not by much.
  • Great interviews today but not with everybody I requested. I asked for 8 guys, did about 8 interviews, but only 2 were with guys I requested. Lots of fun regardless...I like talking to the college players
  • A few new drills today that we saw. One was that they started practice by tackling bags. I like when they are fairly physical right off the bat...sets a good tone
  • The more I watch Mastro the more I like him. Don't get me wrong, I love Gary Campbell and will always admire him and be his friend. But that doesn't mean another coach like Mastro can't do a great job too.
  • Talking to the WR's about Coach Boughnight I like what I'm hearing. The guys say he is a perfectionist...just what I feel the unit needed. So much WR talent, now let's see some production.
  • Lots of pics today, lots of interviews. It will take me a long time to get everything out.
  • All for now

Fall camp starts today with Media Day...

Brandon and I will be attending today's Media Day and will bring you the videos from the Cristobal and Herbert interviews. We are also going to interview the following players and will be releasing those over the next several days:

Juwan Johnson

Shane Lemieux

Travis Dye

Cam McCormick

Tyler Shough

Jevon Holland

Dru Mathis

D.J. Johnson

Saturday's practice is open to all fans and will get going at 10am, with players available for autographs afterwards at around noon.

Top remaining DE's..Smalls

Says now FSU, UF and UO, which is a big change since a few weeks ago. I thought UO was a longer shot than that, so that's good. But FSU? I guess they will have to play better to lure him in.

Recruiting outlook: Smalls is also tough to read but it seems like he’ll either stay in the northwest and go to Oregon or end up at Florida State or Florida. He just visited Florida State but will surely take more visits this season before announcing any sort of decision. Expect Smalls to take some additional high-profile visits for big match ups this fall.

Farrell’s take: I think he’s a long way from making his decision but right now I’m going to say Florida State. Oregon is tough to beat but I think Willie Taggart has made him a huge priority and I think the Seminoles can lure him across the country if things continue as they are.

An improved Oregon defense

Another big factor in the projected improvement by the Oregon defense is depth. They finally have the depth and overall athleticism to withstand the grind of the season.

It's particularly true on the defensive line, where Gary Baker, Gus Cumberlander and Drayton Carlberg have the experience, size, strength and maturity to be very productive while setting the practice standard for an exceptionally promising group of younger players.
