Is the transfer portal good for college football?

  • Yes. It's the athletes' right. Their highly-paid coaches switch jobs at will.

  • No. It creates too much instability and no one sticks it out.

  • No. It's running a muck. Close to 800 players changing schools.

  • Yes. It creates more fan interest and competitive balance.

  • No. The NCAA's decisions on immediate eligibility are hopelessly random.

Jack Sears decision to enter the transfer portal and J.T. Daniels getting injured the next day got me to thinking.

Oregon hasn't faced this issue much yet, but they're recruiting a lot of talented players. A year or two down the road, attrition could go through the roof.

How can anybody field a two-deep or have a balanced roster with all this movement?

At the same time, the players aren't getting paid, and their coaches are getting millions and can change jobs at will.

SC looses QB for season...acl

Sorry state of affairs down there, with Sears having entered the worm hole.Tough schedule ahead.

"Daniels, a native of Santa Ana, California, was a five-star prospect and the No. 16 overall player in the class of 2018. Helton named him the starting quarterback of the Trojans prior to last season. He was up-and-down during a true freshman season in which he threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a team that finished 5-7."

The “too conservative” critique

So there is no shortage of people complaining about how conservative the second half game plan was yesterday. I was frustrated with it too, but really don’t know enough to critique what the coaches were seeing and trying to do—easy to complain when we really have no clue what the options were.

But with that said, I think Oregon fans just need to realize that our head coach is probably one who is going to be conservative with a lead. He is not Chip Kelly. He is not a coach that believes in stepping on the gas with a lead. I think we have seen enough to know this. He is of a different school of thought. Something like the Saban school of thought. Out physical the other team. Run the ball. Run the clock. Play good defense. And go get the talent to do this. He is definitely bringing in the talent. And we are getting there. We were every bit as physical as Auburn for much of the game. But we are not his vision yet. We are on our way. Compare yesterday to Michigan St. If you didn’t see improvement you simply were not paying attention.

I know many here just want him to utilize what he has. Be more aggressive now. Use a different scheme till you have the talent to do what you want. Let Herbert let it rip. But that is not who he is. He is going to do it his way. He is building a culture for the long term. Knee jerk reaction from fans are not going to change that—and it shouldn’t.

I don’t know if what he is trying will work at Oregon. It is not the style I like. But it is what we have and what we will see for the foreseeable future. He is definitely getting the talent to do it. And this team is definitely taking the shape he wants. I am going to wait and see how it goes, and hope it goes well.

Killer Instinct

I really do not know how to develop this other than through time and maturity ....but we need to be able to step on our opponent's throats when we are in the position to do so and then close them out.

!7 +/_ points in the first half lost.....game over at halftime if we get those scores (ok..so forget the Alamo Bowl...lol).

You seldom see Alabama do this...I know its part of the game but recent history suggests that no lead is necessarily safe for the Ducks...

Just saying...

One additional key to the game

It's the first game of the year, a much-hyped matchup against a very physical opponent.

The Ducks have to maintain their composure.

At some point Derrick Brown may get to Justin Herbert, and when the does he may go for one of his patented piledrives.

The Ducks have to keep retaliation between the whistles. They can't negate a big play by standing over the quarterback or jawing or celebration.

Keep it between the lines. Play to the whistle. Celebrate with your teammates.

Wow! The columnist called Cristobal the worst game manager in all of the power five conference!

While that is true I wonder where the blame should be placed. They even mention Mullens and the fact that he seemed a bit clueless that there might be an issue with his football program. That is not surprising given he’s a bean counter and completely hands off.

At least this debacle is bringing attention to the issue and it might be a stimulus for change. Cristobal needs help and the question is where is it going to come from.

Baby Steps

The Ducks moved forward in their quest to be great again. Their physicality was super impressive. Arroyo's offensive strategy in the first half was spot on. The defense was flying around and making plays. The wide receiver group is not a one man show. I could go on but we came up short. We did move forward and I bet we kick the hell out of a bunch of Pac 12 teams. Auburn is a top 10 team. They are tough and have a great defense, running back and a gamer at quarterback. Yes there are area's of concern but the bottom line is we are moving forward and we just lost to a very good team. This staff is young but they see the area's of improvement and continue to work on them. I for one feel we are lucky to have this staff. They will grow, the team will grow and I for one am excited about the future.

Interesting Quote on MC

What do you guys think?

  • “Simply put, the Stanford game last year and the Auburn game this year has left Cristobal branded as one of the worst game managers in all of the Power Five. This is simple and true. And he needs to realize that quickly, as his own inability to navigate late-game situations has already cost his program dearly.” (Yahoo Sports)
Total disclosure: I love MC but he needs to step up in this area IMO

Ducks Impressive in Opener

Oregon took one of the most talented teams in the SEC down to the wire. Of corse, I wanted for the Ducks to win, but I didn’t expect it. The country saw an Oregon team that put on a great show against another talented team. I think that Oregon represented themselves well.

I believe that Auburn is the better football team, but the Ducks got on them early and if not for some unforced errors would have mounted a lead too big for Auburn to catch them. They didn’t embarrass themselves. They almost won.

It is too early to know what this game tells us. It was expected that this would probably be the toughest game on the schedule. This team could even end up in the Rose Bowl. Based upon today’s performance, I feel optimistic that this team could win a lot of games this season.... but as I pointed out, it is still too early to tell.

TOTALLY EMOTIONAL THOUGHTS

1. Good opening effort by the Ducks...we left about 17 points on the board in the first half. Game over...not he coaches fault.

2. Trade one of our kickers to the Chicago Bears....lol.

3. The defense played lights outs...until the end when we got outcoached by Gus.

4. I have been an Arroyo fan...nay...an apologist.....great game plan to open....left 17 points on the board that was not his fault....and then layed a total egg in the second half.

Totally outcoached IMO!!!! Third and long with the first pick of next years draft at QB and we run off tackle.....Fricken Really....????? Chip Kelly could do that...and I still don't know how....but pretty much nobody else in the history of football could.

I have been vocal about giving him (Arroyo) a break and I sincerely hope that I am wrong.....but....he cannot make in-game adjustments to counter the other coaches adjustments

We should be too good right now for a coach that is doing OTJ training. I really hope that I can choke on these words later...truly.....but he cannot make COUNTER MOVES DURING A GAME.

ALSO...perhaps in Marcus' defense.....(and I think that SoCal Duck would agree with me...) on the last drive...even the sportscasters said that we were gonna run right.....and we did and we got stuffed.

So... Marcas has to call a significantly different play. Every team has at least one play they think that they can get a yard with no matter what. If the play he called was indeed the go-to play then I would posit that he has no imagination at all and needs to be replaced.

If MC called that play to show everybody that we are SEC tough... then I would give Marcus a pass on that play (and that play only) because the HC wanted to do that.

And then I would question MC's play-calling....must be an easier way to get fricken one-yard.

And...BTW...even though Justin had great stats in the second half he was largely ineffectual.... (see Arroyo Marcus).

On the good side, I can obviously see how much better Justin is than last year....Pro ready indeed!
And.....I am drinking the Defense Kool-Aid....for once the Offense really need to help them out. Just like last year...a timely first down or two and we win the game.

I apologize for ranting...and tomorrow I may have a different opinion...but a great effort by the Ducks who came to play...but then squandered chances and made poor coaching decisions to lose the game.

I'm out...please feel free to flame me!
