Folks we are so lucky to have this Rivals association. Down here at the Rivals camp LA there were so many Duck targets.

OK.

So we have 17 interviews from Duck targets and between our ace DSA shooter Tom Corno and I, 500 images from today. So as those of you many folks who travel know, we have to fly back to our "home base" before we can process all this media. Huge files compiled exclusively for you.

I am packing up the bags now for my 7am flights back to Eugene. Over the next week you will get everything. And OMG so many of the best of the West have serious interest in the Ducks.

Stay tuned.

Duck BB stays hot, win 7th straight

Baseball team beat Milwaukee 6-1 today to complete the four game sweep and win their 7th straight. They start a four game series with a tough Hawaii team on Thursday at 8:35 PT. Just for reference, Hawaii nearly won their series against #2 Vanderbilt this weekend (Vanderbilt won the deciding third game in the 11th inning). Hawaii is a much better opponent so it will be interesting to see if the BB team can keep it up.

BB: Matthews delivers walk-off home run in 11th

Eugene, Ore. – Gabe Matthews hit a walk-off two-run home in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Oregon a 6-4 victory over Milwaukee Friday night at PK Park.

How it Happened: Kenyon Yovan walked to lead off the inning before Matthews blasted a 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence for the win.

Oregon (4-4) took an early lead in the fourth when freshman Anthony Hall tripled to right-field, scoring Matthews from first. Aaron Zavala followed with an RBI-single scoring Hall for a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers rallied in the sixth. After two singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Zach Nogalski doubled over the first base bag to clear the bases and give the Panthers a 3-2 lead. Milwaukee added a run in the seventh on a Nate DeYoung solo home run to left center.

The Ducks clawed back in the eighth. Hall, led off the inning with a solo shot to right field for the first home run of his career. Zavala followed with a single to left field and freshman Josh Kasevich’s sacrifice bunt put Zavala at second. Jack Scanlon scorched a ball to the right-side, which hit off the first baseman’s glove and trickled into the outfield, allowing Zavala to score from second to tie the game at 4-4.

The back end of the bullpen was once again lights out. Kolby Somers worked two scoreless innings in the ninth and 10th before Hunter Breault worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in top-half of the 11th before Matthews won it for the Ducks.

Box Score Notes: The home run was Matthews’ first of the season … Matthews’ two RBI moved him into a tie for sixth all-time with Aaron Jones (2011-12) in multiple-RBI games with 20 … Hall’s triple in the third was his second of the season … Smith hit in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career … Novitske, who batted leadoff in his first 63 career games, hit in the two hole Friday night … Somers has thrown seven scoreless innings over four outings.

On deck: Oregon will look to extend its winning streak to five straight on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled to starting at 1 pm. Junior Robert Ahlstrom (1-0, 3.09) will take the mound in game one for the Ducks, and Peyton Fuller (0-0, 4.00) will start game two. Milwaukee will counter with LHP Jack Mahoney (0-2, 9.64) and RHP Mike Edwards (0-2, 10.38).

Quotable:

Hunter Beault:

On the winning streak and the bullpen:

“It was awesome. I knew that our bullpen would go out and get it done. Kafka went out and he had a great night. Everyone on the offense was swinging it really well today. I knew somehow we were going to get it done, but I didn’t know who it was going to be or who was going to come out with that big knock like Gabe does. He has done it here time and time again the past four years and has just been really clutch for us. I am just happy I got the opportunity to go out there and get that zero in the eleventh inning.”

Gabe Matthews:

On what makes this season different than other years:

“I mean it is different. The pitching staff is just getting out there for us and getting ahead in counts. They are just keeping us in ball games. Offensively we are not even close to there yet, and we are still winning games, and winning ugly and that is what it is all about.”

Coach Mark Wasikowski:

On getting some wins in close games:

“Well if you just keep doing things right, the wins usually start showing up. These guys are resilient. They come to work every day to practice, and that usually is what puts you to bed at night easily. If your guys are coming to practice, they want to practice and they want to improve, your chance of winning a ball game increases quite a bit. It’s been fun coming to practice with these guys because they like showing up every day.”

On Anthony Hall:

“We’re just fortunate we’ve got Anthony. It happened late, in August or late July, and he just happened to still be available and he turned down a pretty sizable offer from the Atlanta Braves and he’s a Duck. He’s somebody that the Duck fans are really going to appreciate coming to the ballpark to watch. He’s a big physical kid who can do a lot of things.”

SB: Ducks Stay Perfect with Doubleheader Sweep

TULSA, Okla. – No. 10 Oregon moved to 16-0 on the season thanks to big days offensively by Shaye Bowden and Allee Bunker and more strong pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Drake and Tulsa on the opening day of the OSU/Tulsa Invitational Friday at Collins Family Softball Complex.

The Ducks’ 16-0 start is now in second alone for the longest winning streak to start a season in school history, trailing only the 2017 team’s NCAA record-tying 35-0 start. Oregon is also one of just two remaining unbeatens nationally (Stony Brook), and the only undefeated team left that has played at least 10 games.

Game 1 (Oregon 12, Drake 1) – Behind big games at the plate by four different players and another strong effort in the circle, Oregon routed Drake, 12-1, in its first game of the doubleheader.

How it Happened: Same as has been the case over the first 14 games, Oregon set the tone early with a four-run top of the first. Bunker opened the scoring with an RBI double to the left field corner, driving in Terra McGowan, before Ariel Carlson made it a 3-0 game with a two-run single to left center. Bowden plated the final run of the inning on a two-out RBI base knock to score Carlson.

Rachel Cid extended the lead in the top of the second, blasting an opposite-field two-run bomb, scoring McGowan who led off the inning with a single. Deijah Pangilinan kept things going in the fourth, delivering a two-run double scoring Carlson and Bunker. Bowden followed two batters later with her second RBI single of the game, making it 9-0.

A solo homer in the bottom of the fourth put Drake on the board, but Oregon answered with three in the top of the fifth, courtesy of a pair of non-starters. After entering the game the inning prior, Vallery Wong came through with an RBI double to plate Bunker, then Maddie Hopper followed with a two-run single to stretch it to 12-1.

Game 1 Box Score Notes: Four Oregon players turned in four-hit games, accounting for 10 of the team’s 18 hits … Bunker and Bowden each went 4-for-4 with Bunker doubling twice and scoring three runs and Bowden driving in a pair while also recording a double … Bunker turned in her first career four-hit game and second career multi-double performance ... Bowden’s four hits tied a career-high set vs. CSUN on Feb. 8, 2019 … Carlson recorded her first career three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored … McGowan went 3-for-4 with two runs scored … Cid, Pangilinan and Hopper each also turned in multi-RBI games … Brooke Yanez improved to a perfect 8-0 on the year, throwing four innings and striking out four while giving up just a solo homer and three hits.

Game 2 (Oregon 3, Tulsa 2) – It took a while for Oregon to get going, but the Ducks again struck first for three fifth-inning runs before hanging on late in a 3-2 road win at Tulsa to complete the doubleheader sweep.

How it Happened: After a handful of missed opportunities over the first few innings, Oregon struck first with three runs in the fifth. Bunker again came through, doubling over the center fielder’s head with one out in the inning to score McGowan, who singled. Pangilinan made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly, before Bowden continued her hot day at the plate with a single to plate Bunker.

Tulsa would respond immediately, though, as Kari Briggs blasted a two-run homer to right field, cutting the Oregon lead to 3-2. Jordan Dail came out of the bullpen after that and got all three outs in the fifth to hold the Ducks’ lead.

From there, Dail gave up only a double in the sixth inning and fanned three over her three innings of work to earn her second save. The Ducks survived a bit of a scare with one out in the seventh, as Briggs again put a charge into one, but flew out at the wall to Haley Cruse in center field before Dail got the final out on a fly out to left.

Game 2 Box Score Notes: Bowden continued her hot day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI … Bunker finished 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI … After an uncharacteristic 0-for-4 in game one, Cruse turned in a 3-for-4 day at the plate, her fifth three-hit game of the year … Oregon starter Samaria Diaz moved to 5-0 on the year, throwing four innings with six strikeouts and no walks while allowing two runs on four hits … Dail tossed three shutout innings with three strikeouts to get her second save of the season … Diaz and Dail combined for nine strikeouts and no walks, marking the fifth time this year Oregon pitching hasn’t surrendered a walk after it happened just once all last year.

Overall Notables: The 29 hits in the doubleheader are the most Oregon has had over a two-game stretch this season … It’s also the most hits the Ducks have had over two games since vs. CSUN and Missouri on Feb. 9 and 10, 2018 … Bowden recorded back-to-back three-hit games for the first time in her career, going 7-for-8 with three RBIs in the twin bill … Bowden’s season batting average went up 125 points to .375 on the year … Bunker went 6-for-8 with three doubles, extending her hitting streak to nine games while raising her season average to .432.

On Deck: The Ducks continue play in Oklahoma with a doubleheader in Stillwater Saturday against Louisville and Oklahoma State beginning at 10 a.m. PT.

Rivals Camp LA - DSA heading south

I'm about to head out to the airport for a flight down to LA. The Rivals Camp is Sunday and it will be a whirlwind. We have three Duck commits there, about 25 2021 guys with Duck offers plus seven 2022/23 guys with offers.

It will be a great chance to check out basically all of Oregon's top QB targets including Ty Thompson, Tyler Buchner, Peter Costelli and Miller Moss.

The WR group will also be strong with Duck commit Kyron Ware-Hudson and four other Duck offerees at the position.

Tom Corno will be with me so you can expect some excellent photos in addition to all the interviews we hope to get done. Since we will have so much to process you will have to bear with us as we publish the interviews throughout the next two weeks. Lots of great stuff coming.
