  • Very glad he did

Bob Newland dies at 72

Former team MVP in 1970 on a squad that featured Dan Fouts and Ahmad Rashad.

Newland had 67 receptions for 1,123 yards and seven touchdowns to earn All-American honors that year, marks that rank sixth in single-season receptions and third for single-season yards in the school's all-time history.

I hope college football doesn't go in THIS direction

With the new NIL rules, there will be pressure on players to develop a persona, to be the next Johnny Manziel, self-promoting themselves like a WWE heavy, UFC contender or a Kardashian sister.

That's because followers, sponsored posts, sponsored chats and viral videos will all mean more money. Thousands of dollars for top earners.

I like the way Kayvon Thibodeaux is approaching it:

That suggests he's focused on doing his work and becoming a great player. He's said his goal is to win a Heisman.

Three sacks in Columbus would ignite that conversation.

Terrible Takes Hall of Fame

Many here feel I will be a first ballot inductee, but this one from Husky beat writer Mike Vorel takes it to a new level:

Meanwhile, Oregon has had three top ten national recruiting classes in a row, and beaten the Huskies 14 of the last 16 times.

If I remember correctly, last year Mario Cristobal and his staff landed the number one recruit in seven different states.

Old dog still in heaven

No, not one of those dogs.

As I look back to as recently as the first decade of this century I can't help but being in the room right next to ecstatic when it comes to recruiting for Oregon ... in any sport. It was that recently we were happy to pull in a few three star players and get invited into the living rooms of others we didn't get. Meanwhile USC cast aside the 4 star guys they didn't want. Washington could find no reason to gloat over the one five star from their state we didn't get because we weren't getting them from anywhere. Now, we don't begin to cheer until we bring in a five star from somewhere outside California nowadays. OK, we're pretty doggone happy to get one from inside the sunshine state, too. USC continues to have to look up in the standings to find us. Where is Washington, holding hands with Waldo?

Year of the flip: Part Deux, Texas Style

Not sure of anyone remembers, but when Oregon started landing the elite 2021 players like Troy Franklin, UW honks basically said "They will all flip and be Huskies." (Hint: It did not happen)

This year, both Longhorn and Aggie honks are saying basically the same thing "wait until November, they will all flip closer to home."

Going to be fun watching them get twisted.

Oregon's offensive line class so far

Two 3-stars and an unrated JC. Good size and length, but all three in need of extensive development, strength and conditioning.

None of the three look like immediate contributors. Each is a bit of a project.

The Ducks appear to have missed on all of the nationally-ranked offensive linemen they brought in for visits.

Coaches Cristobal, Mirabal and Feld have some work to do, as do these young men.

Kelvin Banks would be a game changer for the Oregon o-line class

Because he's a true left tackle.

Offensive linemen can be taught and trained. Their bodies can be reshaped.

But left tackles have to have certain physical attributes, ideally tall with long arms and a wide base.

They have to have the athleticism to match up with edge rushers, solid technique and a good strike.

A streak of meanness helps, the desire to dominate an opponent within the rules.

They must have the agility to block at the second level.

Oregon has been blessed with a string of great PAC-12 left tackles, from Penei Sewell to Tyrell Crosby to Tyler Johnstone to Jake Fisher to Bo Thran.

If you have a great left tackle your line has a leader and an anchor, a decent chance to be cohesive and effective. Without one, it flounders.
