What Does Management Want Us To Be?

The title presupposes a long range plan. And it should, given the investment, rather than an ad hoc response to bad choices in leadership...and I mean defense. And maybe even....well, let's let the season play out.

We have become so focused on coaches that we've been stupidly unconcerned with management, you know, the guys who are actually MOST responsible for the product on the field.

I have no doubt that our well paid program managers have hearts in the right places. And they get it right in many respects, witness our BB program, Track, VB, BB, Golf and Women's Softball amongst others. Yet in each of these the success of the program invariably depends on coaching and recruitment.

One would think that the greatest driver of Oregon sports...FOOTBALL...would be the most aggressive, forward thinking, brand burnishing, excellence determined, hell bent on the best there is, on the minds of the guys who write the checks, who should brook no mediocrity.

Yet, we act as if we're still the little engine that once could because we were lucky enough to have hired Chip and recruited Mariota. But we've now seem more like the Dutch Boy with his finger in the dike that's cracking. We've become incrementalist in football management....patch here and there...see what happens.

The recent player comments have shaken my trust in MH. As for the defense, trust was lost long ago. We can look forward to, if not, DEMAND, redemption from players and coaches over the last half of the season and we should have the patience to see it through...to hopefully appreciate development, find reason for optimism and a return to respectability.

But if we limit our critique to the coaches on the field without holding those who appointed them as much or more responsible, we live in a two dimensional universe.

With a half season left to play, let's wait until the end game in Corvallis before we light the torches...but be sure we include the boys in the suites if it comes to that kind of ending.

Data trends of Oregon football

Notes:

R = Ranking (out of 128), so lower numbers are better in that graph.

Looking at 2007, since Kelly showed up

Offense (Scoring and Total)

Although scoring is around a low points for this time frame, there is likely a huge jump in the scoring rank, as many teams have played some of the sub par early games that pad numbers. Still this could also indicate the evolution of offensive football which was introduced by Oregon.

Similarly total offensive yards aren't at their lowest points, and still what has historically been top 5 looks like top 20 right now. Again, this is likely a combination of half a season of data and to a lesser extent improvement in overall offensive strategies.

One thing is for certain, and that is a fairly consistent downward trend, even if slightly over the past 3 years.

Offense (Rushing and Passing)

When looking at breakdown of offense, 2013 and 2014 show the MM effect, as the passing offense was well above other years (VA 2015 was the only other one over 250 a game). Rushing has bounced around a bit, but based of rank, you can see that other teams are likely improving in rush offense as numbers that had produced top 5 consistently are now top 10/20. Both passing and rushing are down from last season.

Defense (Scoring and Total)

This is where it gets really ugly. As much hate as Allioti got over the years, he at least put pretty consistent scoring numbers, something I'm sure Duck fans would gladly take back right now. I don't think Oregon's defense can be graded on the same metric as others, as when Oregon's offense is clicking, the defense just has to play much more than other defenses experience.

Given that, Allioti shows us what a solid defense probably looks like with Oregon's offense attached. Throw in a struggling defense with the Oregon offense on a very slight downturn, and you see an epic collapse (or explosion, in this case) of numbers. In the worst years of Allioti, Oregon was giving up about 28, the last two years high 30s, low 40s, so a TD and FG to 2 TDs extra a game.

Oregon has actually been outscored this season

Defense (Rushing and Passing)

While Pass D has been definitely struggling the past three years, I think the bigger issue is the ugly trend in Rush D for Oregon over a longer period. Oregon's rush defense has somewhat steadily regressed.

Turnover Margin

What makes teams special? Taking care of the ball and making game changing plays the other way. Oregon has been failing at this part of the game this year, more so than any other year in this time frame. For the first time Oregon is at a negative turnover ratio. The last two years have seen numbers unseen during Kelly's HC years.

Watched the Beavs Rising

All around us we've watched the door mats of the Pac 12 get up off the mat. The Buffs are real and iIf anyone bothered to watch the Ute/Beav game, you'd have to respect defenses on both sides, but especially the Beavs who've proved coaching and finding hidden talent with character can produce moments of respectability in an uneven year.

Earlier, we watched Cal stop the Utes in a goal line stand. And Cougs trash Stanford and lead UCLA.

I bring these up as challenges to our program, not for replacement of anyone.

What we have before us is an opportunity to evaluate coaching, recruitment and performance going forward in the last half of the season. What we have we will most certainly know at the end when we play the Beavs.

The temptation will be to throw it all in before our kids have a say so. That would be a disrespect to all we hold dear as Duck fans. If we are true fans we will hold the line and standby our soldiers to the end. And if in the end our generals have failed to lead, recruit, and lose faith in the troops, we shouldn't hesitate to demand respectability.

Rutgur Reitmaier Crystal Ball to Michigan

Just saw on 247 sports that Michigan is working super hard to flip our 1 and only big bodied DL, they seem to have as it was quoted ramped it up to get him by really pushing him to turn, they are so high on him they think he is like No.9th ranked DT in the country.

If Oregon blows this one I think I'm will have to excuse myself from anymore Oregon football for a while. Too much of this goes on especially when we finally get 1 piece to help this team. It could take just 2 or 3 of these type of kids to change a defense up front for Ducks. Don't beleive me see last year front line of Buckner and Baldacci they are gone and this team is by far the worst they have been on the DL....

Let's keep this kid Rutgers R

Nate McBride Loves Track

I just read a couple of articles regarding Five star linebacker Nate McBride. He is absolutely a two sport recruit. He will not commit without an assurance that he can run track....and he loves track.

Apparently he loved his visit. I hope that he had an opportunity to talk to the best recruiter and the most successful coach in the UO AD, Robert Johnson.

Still on a break.

Update for regulars. I took a break from the board a while back due to a scary diagnosis of Merkel Cell Carcinoma. A couple days ago that sent my wife and I to Seattle in search of some new research into MCC. BAD NEWS? I am now staged at Stage 4 as the cancer has metastasized from knee to groin and now to nodes in abdomen.

Good News? The UW has two clinical programs that I am qualified for, most expenses, including transportation, paid for. Even if by air back and forth. We will be DUCKS FOREVER! NO WORRIES gang. No matter the outcome.

What would it take . . .

for Helfrich to convince you he deserves another year as Oregon's HC? Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere already. I've seen a lot of topics on who Oregon should hire once Helf is gone and threads discussing how he has ruined the program or at least set it back. I just wanted to hear some thoughts from everybody on what, if anything, Helf can do to win back your trust or at least confidence that he deserves one more year.
