Echoes of a Past We Never Had

In an article of wistful longings of a past we never had, Collin Wiest penned a smarmy, romanticized , paen to Duck nobility and the loss of innocence caused by our recent restructuring.

If we had the echoes of Rockne and Dorais, of Lujack and the Golden Boy, Weist may have been on to something that brings a longing to remembrances of things past. His Oregon Live posting:

We are a recent arrival to the elites of college football, unless 15 years is counted in dog longevity, that is. His musings and lament mirror the same pangs we've read here...and genuine sympathy at the loss of faithful coaches elevated from within our noble, ivy covered, victorious and dominating juggernaut of historical non pareil.

It would be sad if it weren't bathos that tradition had nothing to do with Chip Kelly bringing football revolution to Eugene from New Hampshire. It wasn't home grown, folks....it was imported. So was Lubick...and even Helfrich.

Wiest sounds like a codger in a rocker, murmuring about a fictional state of grace that over domed Duck Football, with each rock inciting a tear.

Let's get on with this. We're new to this, whatever, elite thing and don't know how to embrace it yet, even while we kvetch about our fall and plead for the coaches who caused it.

Willie Taggart and the clean sweep could not have come soon enough. And Wiest had best find another subject for the lovelorn.

Over signing

Will Coach T over sign?

Do we (I) care?

He has over 30 new offers out.....let's say 40 by NLID.

If somehow he convinces let's say 12 kids to sign, does he start releasing kids who are already committed?

I know there are lots of variables here....more of a hypothetical question.

I hate the way that Saban oversigns.......but now I find myself thinking it's OK if Willie signs a bunch of 5 stars to replace a bunch of 3 stars (HYPOTHETICALLY).

I may have joined the Dark Side....

.....and I don't think I care.

What say ye?

The Night Before..Duck version

Leave your Christmas recruiting wishes here. Mailing an express letter to the North Pole on Saturday. Here's a little Christmas rhyme I took liberties with:

The Night before

It was the night before Christmas and all through the House hope for a program that played like a mouse

Mullens stayed focused, intent to secure a coach that could save the program's allure.

Taggart came in after Helfrich was axed leaving Duck fans to wonder if LOI's would be faxed.

Some decommited, others stayed true, but Taggart stayed focused, Florida kids to pursue.

He talked to the team and gained their respect, Royce chose to stay, another box checked.

Hope is high as Christmas is nigh, then Leavitt appears in the blink of an eye.

Tweets abound, our hearts are a "Twitter" as offers fly out drawing hitter after hitter.

As the dead period seems to stand in the way a guy named Jimmie will help save the day.

Taggart keeps on, looking far, deep and wide to fill his staff, dream team alongside.

So we sleep with new hope, expectations abound, we dream of the Natty, soon to be crowned.

These Ducks went 1,2,3 in the Pac 12 Championships in the 100, and 200...and won the 4x100.

The Pac 12 runner up, Ariana Washington, was the NCAA Champion in the 100, and 200 and made the US Olympic Team.

The Pac 12 3rd place finisher, Dejah Stevens, finished 2nd in the NCAAs, 2nd in the Olympic Trials and finished 7th in the 200m at the Olympics in Rio.

So what about the one who won the Pac 12s in the 100 and 200? That's Hannah Cunniffe. She pulled a hamstring in the NCAA Championships and was out for the Olympic Trials with an injury. ...and now she's back! ....along with her two teammates.

Find me a college team on this planet with three better women sprinters...you can't!

Wallace and Franklin

So, I did not post the story here because I did not feel it was my place. Several months ago I learned that both of these players were facing accusations. I spoke with a friend in a traditional media outlet and passed along the information. Along the way, I discovered that there was an open investigation from UOPD into alleged sexual assaults. Because they were unable to get an interview with the victim(s) they decided not to run the story.

One piece of advice I gave which was followed was to ask Helfrich at the end of the season what the status of Wallace was given the graduation of three tight ends and the Helfrich response was "I don't know" which differs from the official account from Craig Pintens in the Grief story. (FYI, I also gave tip on the story to Grief who had not yet heard the information when I passed it along to him).

I casually referenced "multiple sexual assault investigations" in an earlier edition of Flock Talk - now you know the other investigations to which I was referring.
