Football recruiting break down

There's been a lot of discussion about how heavily our coaches have gone for Florida players and how we should go much more intensely for kids from California (for instance). I thought that was a fair topic for discussion and, using the search function in the database, came up with the following numbers:

FL: 46
CA: 40
TX: 17
GA: 11
OR: 8
UT: 8
NV; 5
AZ: 5
OH: 5
LA: 5
WA: 4
KY: 3
PA: 2
NY: 2
ID: 2
CO: 1
NC: 1
VA: 1
TN: 1
AL: 1
MS: 1
SC: 1
MI: 1
IA: 1
KS: 1
MO: 1

That looks like the net has been spread pretty wide, and, while Florida and Georgia are a lot higher than we're used to seeing, Texas is about the same and the West Coast has been blanketed pretty well. Overall, to my admittedly amateur eyes, it looks like the coaches are hitting the areas they are still well known while working hard to get their feet in all the doors possible in the areas we need to rely on in the future.

Spring Practice schedule...

Fans will be afforded a closer glimpse inside the new era of Oregon football under head coach Willie Taggart with the announcement that three of the program’s 14 practices prior to the April 29 Spring Game will be open to the general public as the Ducks open off-season workouts on Wednesday, April 5.

Practices in Eugene will be open to the public Friday, April 7, and Saturday, April 8, at Kilkenny Field to the west of the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex, while the Ducks will take their April 15 workout on the road to Portland’s Jesuit High School.

This Friday’s workout is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., with Saturday slated to start at 2:30 p.m. The April 15 practice in Portland will run from 2:30-4 p.m., with parking available in the Cronin Field’s East Lot at the intersection of S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and S.W. White Pine Lane.

For the open practices in Eugene, spectators are asked to park in the Autzen Stadium East Lot and enter the facility via the southeast ramp near the Moshofsky Center parking lot. Gates will open this weekend at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively. Fans will be asked to observe practice from the north sideline only, with cameras not allowed into the facility by the general public.

No food and/or beverages will be allowed into the practice facility. Restroom facilities will be available in the Moshofsky Center across from the Duck Store.

Admittance to the open practices will be on a first-come basis, with the number of spectators limited to once the capacity has been reached. In the event that weather forces the team to practice inside the Moshofsky Center, the open-practice status may be amended to be rescheduled another day.

The Ducks will conclude their off-season workouts with the annual Spring Game on April 29, beginning at 11 a.m. in Autzen Stadium.

3-star Tennessee TE Jacob Warren set to visit this weekend

I recently caught up with 3-star Tennessee TE Jacob Warren to talk about his plans for a visit to Eugene this weekend.

Here's a portion of what he had to say:

In His Words: “Oregon has always been that school that I’ve liked and always watched. Their players are always hype; it’s just a cool team to watch. I jut think from my childhood and stuff I’ve always wanted to check it out and I think is my opportunity. I have high expectations for the visit, all I’ve heard is really good stuff about their facilities and stuff and talking to their coaches I’m expecting to have a really good time.”

Wednesday practice report...

What a historic day. First day of practice in the new era of Oregon football with Willie Taggart at the helm. Not only that, they now allow media inside practices for the first 30 minutes.

So I was there shooting away with my camera, enjoying the freedom of roaming the sidelines taking pictures just like the good ol' days. Of course with only 30 minutes to watch and most of that behind the lens, I did not get that much out of watching the drills but still have a few notes to pass along.

  • Energy. First thing I would say is it seems there is more energy from the coaches than before. Now keep in mind, "before" was back during Chip's first year, the last time media was allowed inside practices. No idea how the energy was under Helfrich. But the energy in there from the coaches was very good.
  • Lots of simply learning the ropes today for everybody. It was not a super-efficient 30 minutes, nor should it be expected to be. Getting from drill to drill took a little time and it didn't seem like there were a ton of reps at each station. Still though, it the guys actually looked pretty good out there.
  • Including Braxton Burmeister who was throwing with the other QB's. We will need to see what kind of arm he has because in the drills I watched he was not asked to throw deep balls. I would say Herbert was probably still No. 1 but really they did not have a practice order during the parts we watched. So there was no real telling who was with which string.
  • New frosh DT Jordon Scott is very wide for his height...definitely a nose tackle/interior DL...not a DE. He is going to need to watch his nutrition over the years.
  • Nobody was wearing single digits. Under Taggart you have to earn the right. Charles Nelson was wearing #18, Darren Carrington was #22. I asked Darren when he might wear 7 again and he said he thinks maybe fall camp. I asked Charles how he liked number 18 and he said "it's OK for now." Didn't seem like a big fan of it.
  • I'll be back for another 30 minutes on Friday but not Saturday as I'll be down in Los Angeles covering the Rivals LA Camp.
  • Interviews today were with Royce Freeman, Troy Dye and Darren Carrington plus Justin Herbert and Coach Cristobal did group interviews.
All for now.

Cal game, 9/30

So I know this is crazy early for this, but myself and a few friends will be heading out to Eugene for this game, and was wondering if anyone already knew if they were going to be using their tickets or not?

At this point, it's 4 of us, but could easily end up at 6 or 7 as soon as some of these jack wagons get off their butts and commit to the trip.
