Hanging on to all these recruits for 5 months

The bad news is that there is along wait to hang on to all these guys. They will be recruited and pressured for a few more months. No schools are going to give up on them. Fans should just accept that this is probably going to happen. Here is the good news, and why I'm not too concerned

1) Players like to play with other great players. Everyone in this class knows that they are a part of one of the best classes in the country and they will be less likely to leave. This class is like a snowball rolling down a hill

2) I think that this years team is going to be way better than advertised, but even if it isn't, the player class knows that THEY are the ones that can turn it around

3) The Ducks are in on may more great prospects and the problem will be not be losing guys, but having enough spots for big time players. I believe that Oregon will lose some of these guys, but replace them with as good , or even better prospects

I believe they are going to get a top QB. Even if its late in the process, some senior QB's are going to come out of nowhere their senior seasons. The Duck QB depth chart is way too attractive. A guy can come in compete for 2nd string from day one. Also a decent chance that Herbert goes pro after his junior season

A new recruiting era

A.J., Brandon and I were talking before the gates opened at Saturday Night Live, and A.J. made the point that the Ducks used to get the leftovers after USC and UCLA were done. Nick Aliotti had to find 2 and 3-star guys who could play, coach the heck out of them (the one thing that Brady Hoke and Don Pellum accomplished was making Duck fans appreciate N.A.) and blitz like a fiend to keep up with the Oregon offense.

Now, Coach Taggart and staff are getting truly talented and elite guys, guys with speed and juice. Another amazing thing about this class is that there are 21 commits, and the 6-7 or however many they add are likely to be really outstanding players, maybe Lamar, Seweill, Hufanga, Cota, Williams, etc., plus a quarterback they'll flip.

The Ducks could end up with an astounding 14-18 4-star guys (currently 10, and Harrison, Webb, Holland, Randazzo and Cunningham might all earn an upgrade in their senior seasons.)

I think it's significant too that the class has such balance. It's not three or four five stars and a bunch of journeymen--it's a group that from top to bottom has talent, competitive fire and potential. These guys will compete and make the entire roster better. Nearly all of them have the speed, size, strength, agility and skill to develop into future starters. A few of them are game changers.

I'd almost rather have 15 4-stars than a handful of highly-touted, 3 and out "my top 12" 45-offer superstars. The New England Patriots have demonstrated this principle for years.

Talent wins, but character and commitment complete the picture. I feel like the Ducks are getting a mix of ability and the desire to be great. It's going to be fun to watch what happens next.

What will we do for 5 months after we fill up next week?

If we keep getting 1 per day we will be full next week (29 spots). What will take the place of our obsession with every hint or rumor regarding commits and our excitement when they come?

I propose we agree to the following:
1. Turn our attention to complete support of the team for this season (no negativism).
2. Refuse to be paranoid over rumors of decommits, or overly upset if/when they happen.
3. Not complain about who we may have gotten had we held a few spots open (which we may already be doing at this, I'm sure there are a couple of guys they will wait for).
4. Refuse fearing that people who are committed will be flipped in the last days before NSD.

Nah.....what fun would that be!

On Johnson, the new Oregon commit...

I have been on the road at schools and practices all day, so I am just having a chance to share my thoughts on Andrew Johnson.

Here is a little breakdown of what I see in the future Duck.

  • Strong
  • Some stiffness
  • High motor
  • Closing speed
  • Has played a lot with his hand down
  • Raw
Overall, he is an impressive specimen. He is strong and he plays strong. He loves to workout, he works hard and he plays until the whistle blows. He has a lot of development to do as a player. He has played a lot of DE in high school and he has been an effective pass rusher. He can get up the field and pressure the QB. As a LB, he is going to have to work on shedding blocks and reading his keys. He is a self-driven kid who does not like the attention as a top recruit in Georgia. He keeps to himself and that is why this commitment somewhat came out of nowhere. I think this could be a very good get for Oregon when we look back a few years down the road.
