Steve Barnett

I read in my latest Oregon Quarterly of the passing of Duck football all-American Steve Barnett. Steve played for the Ducks 1959 - 1963 and received numerous conference and national honors. He lived in my dorm freshman year (Stafford Hall), and I knew him to be a thoroughly nice guy, modest with no BMOC airs. I had not seen this reported elsewhere on DSA, so thought I would post it.

Recruiting

Having just learned that Gunnell will not be at the Spring Game is very disconcerting.
Oregon has been very unimpressive in recruiting QB's and WR.s the past couple of years. These are very important positions for the overall success of the team.
The Assistant Coaches responsible(Johnson , Arroyo) should have been fired some time ago.
I am also wary of Arroyo's ability to be the O.C.
For the amount of money we are paying these Coaches it should be easy to find much more qualified coaches to replace them.
If Cristobal is unwilling or unable to see this failure it cast's doubt on his ability as a H.C.

Cyrus Habibi-Likio...

I had lots of fun interviewing Cyrus today. He is a very outgoing young man. I could have talked to him all day.

Like most D-1 prospects during their high school years, Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis standout Cyrus Habibi-Likio played on both sides of the ball. In college though, he knew he wanted to give running back a try first.

“I love playing running back. I came in, made that decision and it is still my choice. Then Mastro came in, somebody I am comfortable with. He actually recruited me in high school.”

For the Ducks he presents the option of a bigger, longer runner and receiver out of the backfield. And he loves running back. But being a team player, the 6-foot, 200-pound athlete would consider moving to defense if that would help the team more.

“After this past year I was kind of looking at defense,” said Habibi-Likio. “I was talking to Leavitt to see if it’s an option. But Mastro came in and boosted my confidence, so I’m still sticking to that position.”

Speaking of confidence, Habibi-Likio has it in spades for his position coach.

“I call him Mastro the Mastermind. That is the nickname I have always given to him ever since high school.

“It’s all the very little things. People think running back is easy and you can just run around and be an athlete, but no matter who you are he will always find something that’s wrong, and he corrects us and does a really good job with us.”

Isaac Slade-Matautia...

Exactly the type of guy you want on your team.

He has learned a lot from the Hawaii players that were here before him.

"Marcus and DeForest are two big guys from Hawaii who have made it big through here. I just have to carry on what they left. Being here with Lana and Marcus’ younger brother Matt, they told me a lot about school and here. You have got to stay on everything. It is not like high school where you can do whatever you want. You are a little young guy again so you have just got to take advice from everybody"

Isaac has been running with the ones all spring and I wonder if Apelu will be able to beat him out when he gets back to full contact.

Heading to practice #9...

Very blustery, rainy, windy day here in Eugene right now. The Ducks will conduct their 9th practice of spring drills starting at 9am. I assume they will move it inside the Mo center. That would be good because I like staying dry, but on the other hand, terrible lighting for photos in there. About 1 in 10 action shots turn out.

Today's interviews are with sophomore OL Jacob Capra and freshman RB Cyrus Habibi-Likio.

Mattrell McGraw: Make it full speed

I caught up with him for a one-on-one for this great interview. He is a good guy.

"The crime rate is pretty good here compared to back home."
