The Daily Duck - 3-8-19

Some big events for Oregon fans to follow as we head into the opening weekend of spring football practices.

Softball (11-7) hosts Oklahoma State (10-7-1) with a first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm at Jane Sanders Field in Eugene. The Ducks got swept in three games of the Judy Garman Classic last week in Fullerton though their last two against Michigan and Tennessee were cancelled due to weather.

The 27-3 women’s basketball team takes their three-game winning streak to the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas with a 2:00 pm tip off. They face Arizona (18-12) who is the tourney’s #8 seed following their 76-48 dismantling of USC on Thursday.

The poor unfortunate baseball lads (7-4) are in Honolulu today as they take on Hawaii (8-5) at 6:35 pm PST. But before you start to feel sorry for them, it should get up to a reasonable 77 degrees there today. In Eugene we are slated for a high of 43.

But the sun and beach are not the only problems for George Horton’s team. The Rainbows enter today’s game on a six-game winning streak, including a 7-6 win over the Ducks yesterday.

Track and Field will be in Birmingham, Alabama today for the beginning of the NCAA indoor Championships. The Oregon men most recently won the national title in 2016, the women in 2017.

Fans can follow all four days of the event on the ESPN channels.

Fri, March 8 | ESPN3/WatchESPN - 3:30 p.m.
Sat, March 9 | ESPN3/WatchESPN - 2 p.m.
Sun, March 10 | ESPN2 (replay) - 7 p.m.

Isaiah Newell...

The Ducks just offered the CA RB. I spoke with him about it just now. Asked him

"Are any teams standing out to you?"
"Oregon for sure," he answered.

Also funny when I introduced myself he said

"My brother is named A.J. too."
I said "He sounds like a handsome guy."
He laughed and said "I like you already." :p

Story in the morning.

MBB: @24-6 UW on Saturday...Can they do it?

The Ducks have been playing the best basketball in the Pac-12 the last two weeks. But on Saturday it's in Seattle. Nobody has gone there and played very well this year.

Can Oregon maintain the Big Mo they've generated the last three games heading into the Pac-12 tourney?

If Pritchard and White keep playing well and the Ducks hit some outside shots, they can certainly do it. Their defense has been consistently good lately.

MBB: Ducks to play Memphis...

ESPN Events Adds Phil Knight Invitational to Early-Season Men’s Basketball Slate

  • Inaugural event will feature Memphis, Oklahoma, Oregon and Oregon State

ESPN Events, in conjunction with Rip City Management and Rose Quarter, will add another early-season men’s basketball event to its lineup in 2019, with the inaugural Phil Knight Invitational (PKI). The annual event, slated to occur through 2021, will tipoff on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from the Moda Center in Portland, Ore., with Oklahoma facing Oregon State and Oregon playing Memphis.

PKI will continue to honor Nike co-founder and 2012 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Phil Knight and his contributions to college basketball.

“We are excited for the opportunity to grow the PKI out of the success of the PK80,” said Clint Overby, vice president of ESPN Events. “Mr. Knight’s impact in the sport of college basketball, as well as in Portland, is immeasurable.”

“We are grateful for the opportunity to build upon the success of PK80 and partner again with ESPN Events to host the upcoming Phil Knight Invitational events at the Moda Center,” said Chris Oxley, senior vice president of business development at the Rose Quarter. “The PKI events will further the legacy of Mr. Knight’s contribution to collegiate basketball and will again bring a talent stacked roster to the Pacific Northwest.”

“I am very happy to be part of a new tradition of early season college basketball matchups with the PKI,” said Phil Knight. “We love college basketball in the Pacific Northwest and I appreciate ESPN and the Rose Quarter for making the PKI an annual event in Portland.”

Tickets will go on sale later this year, ranging from $35-$125. Information can be found at www.pkinvitational.com.
