Keys to the game: Nevada

Keys to the game change a bit when you're favored by 24.

1. All gas, no brakes

The Ducks need to jump start their offense, and they need to find out where their weapons are offensively. Move the ball. Throw it to all three levels. Keep pushing.

2. Play sound and fundamental defensive football, and play a lot of people. Find out what those freshmen can do.

3. Exploit the Nevada secondary

The Wolfpack gave up 423 passing yards and four touchdowns to Purdue quarterback Elijah Sindelar, but Sindelar helped them by throwing two picks.

4. Take care of the football.

This is always and obvious, but bears mentioning because the Boilermakers suffered 5 turnovers that led to their upset loss, 34-31 on a last-second 56-yard field goal.

5. Stay healthy, stay hungry and stay off the targeting suspension list.

6. Shake off the Auburn loss from the opening whistle. Give the Autzen crowd something to cheer about and cure the hangover. Use this game to discover your identity and build some confidence.

7. The old football adage is that a team improve the most between week one and week two. Very interested to see how the Ducks respond and what kind of effort they bring to this.

Separation of FB and Religion: Dabo's Clemson

I had wondered about this, and specifically the propriety of a state funded school using religion as the foundation of it's sports program, recruiting....and, or course, the role it played in Clemson landing DJU. I think most would agree that religion and specifically Christianity are a good thing for young men. Much better than some of the alternatives, see eg, Colt Lyerla. SI still has some good writers.

"Once Lawrence moves on, Swinney’s run on Christian QBs should continue. D.J. Uiagalelei, the No. 1 QB prospect of the 2020 class, recently committed to Clemson, citing religion as the No. 1 reason. “Jesus is number one in life, so that was my main priority in choosing a college,” Uiagalelei says. “It was: who’s going to support it? Or: where am I going to feel most comfortable about it?”

D.J.’s mother, Tausha, still remembers the promise Swinney made to her during the recruiting process, as they discussed their shared faith: “He said to me, ‘We’re going to win some games and lose some games. But I guarantee you that every single player that comes through this program will hear about the Gospel of Christ.’”

Come at me, Bro

In today's column I endeavor to discuss the issues with the Oregon offense and how the Ducks can use these next two games to improve it:

https://oregon.rivals.com/news/mythbusters-it-s-not-playcalling-it-s-players-nick-saban-says-so-

We've certainly talked about this a lot. Many of us are frustrated. I still think there are things Oregon (and Herbert and Arroyo) can do to get the most out of this group and find points.

Certainly many of you will disagree with everything I said. I believe this can be a 10-win and make a good bowl, maybe even a Rose Bowl. Certainly they have a lot of work to do to get there,

The RPO game they've added makes this even more Justin's team. He makes the reads and has the freedom to choose the matchups. It's a great opportunity for him. They'll have more success with it over the rest of the nonconference schedule and against an exploitable PAC-12.

The best case scenario is that they build up some rhythm and confidence, finding out who their playmakers are going to be in a group that's struggled to move the ball at times.

You're either getting better and competing or you're thinking like a loser. Herbert, Dye and CMC are going to do everything they can to continue the upward arc of the program.

I think sometimes fans forget this was a 4-8 team just two years ago. It's a process. Some great recruiting and culture development has turned it around. Cristobal has said getting to 10 or 11 wins is just that much harder.

Can they get themselves ready to take the next step? Can they stop shooting themselves in the foot in big games?

Oregon Cross Country Opens Tonight

We are close to the opening meet of the 2019 Cross Country season at the Ash Creek Invitational in Monmouth, Ore. The teams are well prepared coming off a summer that showed a lot of consistency and stability in contrast to last year's tumultuous coaching changes. A full contingent for both men and women is expected. Here's the goducks story...

There is reason to be very optimistic about both the men's and women's teams. In case you missed them, here are the pre-season interviews from our two distance coaches.

Chip Kelly

Do you believe that Oregon football would be better off right now had they re- hired CK and his UCLA staff over MC and his staff? I ask this question because so many of you keep bringing up CK (he made the choice to leave).

I think Chip is a good coach, but his offense and the Oregon program being where it was at the time of his promotion to HC was perfect timing. I personally like MC as the head coach and the staff that he has in place for many obvious reasons. Like many of you my biggest question mark is Arroyo as OC although I think we will continue to see improvement in play calling and game time adjustments, fingers crossed.

SWT: Blames Loss on Hydration?

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/27528045/dehydration-possible-factor-fsu-loss

HOW DOES THIS GUY STILL HAVE A JOB?

Consider this from ESPN:

On his weekly radio show Monday, Taggart said he has spoken with FSU's medical staff about better hydration after seeing several players cramp up in the game.

Taggert: "They need to start hydrating early in the week and take care of their bodies," Taggart said on his call-in show. "We can't leave it up to our players just to do it. We've got to force them to hydrate and take care of themselves. I don't know if we did a good job of that last weekend. One of those situations where you live and learn, and we'll make sure that we help our guys when it comes to that."

Earlier Tuesday, Florida State offensive lineman Baveon Johnson questioned the team's conditioning level, saying it "wasn't our strong suit." Johnson later said of the Boise State game, "No, we weren't prepared. I wasn't prepared, we all weren't prepared."

"I feel like it was just conditioning overall," he added. "That's what we need to get better at."

The first game of the season...basically at home where you have been practicing all summer and you not only have cramps (which happens) but your team is not in shape.

HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN?!

SWT basically blamed the players for not hydrating enough....." we've got to force them to hydrate" (no Sh#t Sherlock), and then one of your players says that conditioning "wasn't our strong suit."

Unbelievable.

I'm guessing he still has the same Strength and Not Conditioning Coach that we had here who put players in the hospital.

Lastly, I am blown away by the fact that Taggart would admit this publicly...what a dunce...I think that hes just looking for excuses.
