Popo Amuave and other young defensive studs

I don't recall a guy coming out of nowhere like Popo. He is really coming on and giving fat Mac plenty of rest. He is really quick for his size and he is usually in the backfield. He is fast becoming a co-starter type guy. When you watch film , you will see they are not losing anything when he is on the field

Other defenders that get me excited

1) MJ Cunningham is also quick for his size. He took Dye's place and was always around the ball. Not saying he is Dye, but he is bigger and moves really well

2) Great young corners. DJ James was flying around. Needs to quit grabbing receivers , but I love the way he played. I didn't see Wright, but he is going to be great based on what I saw in earlier games. These freshman corners as good or better than the excellent duo ahead of them

3) Mase Funa and Kevon - Yes, we all know they are doing it right now, but what will they be like after a year in the strength program? Both these guys could be 1st round round pics. Kevon need to add some good weight and Funa maybe slim down a little bit. They are only scratching the surface. DJ Johnson in this group as well

Tho is entire defense really fly's around. Their confidence is sky high. Avalos is a huge upgrade in scheme and also attitude. He is a young guy and it's obvious the players love playing hard for him. Great depth right now and a bright future for this defense. It maybe be even better next season

It seems to me that this staff are great evaluator's. They are getting more 4 and 5 star guys, but also a higher percentage of those guys are living up to their ratings

We're number 12

Moving up, slowly. A little carnage/chaos next week and a Fusky win should be worth a spot or two, but then it gets tough and may be more of a holding position game barring way more chaos. However, we have 2 ranked teams still on the schedule, and another we'd see in the Packy, so there's still some SOS there.

Sudden Impact

Watching games this season thus far, there is clearly a missing element that is deferring Oregon’s Potential for greatness. I’m sure this will not be a popular topic, but one (If we are honest) we have to at least contemplate. Going back 15 years, Oregon has always had a back (or two) who could change the game with one play; a player that had to be accounted for; and a back who broke tackles, as often as he broke ankles. A back who had a Sudden Impact ability. For all of the talk of the improved talent we have brought in( And it’s true!) we don’t have anyone who has to be accounted for in the backfield ( I eliminated Dollars from this conversation) at this position. Now a power running team, there’s not a back we have with the talent, strength, or vision to take advantage of our offensive line play (except on gaping holes). While our coaches have changed how we recruit, and brought in tons of talent, the RB coach has under recruited. What do we have coming in next year? The old saying “ You don’t miss your water until it’s gone” made me remember that coach Campbell always had exceptional backs, many times with Sudden Impact. To be a Championship team, we are gonna Need top end talent at the RB position.

Duck Track roster out

it is always exciting when the roster is released because there are always surprises. This year is no exception. One of my favorite recruits, sprinter Chi Okoro, is not ( as yet) on the roster. I will not go over all of the surprises in this post, but slowly comment over the week.

Here is one of the several unexpected additions... and it’s a good one!

To this point, the Ducks record (and defensive prowess) is a bit of an illusion

Like everyone else I've enjoyed Oregon's 4-1 start and first place standing in the North, 2-0 with a significant lead over the other contenders. It makes writing about and following college football more interesting, having a team in contention for great things. Been five years since the Ducks made a Rose Bowl. Getting back would be a heady accomplishment.

Objectively, there's still a lot of work to do.

The Oregon defense has been lights out, but to date they've caught everyone at just the right time with some serious limitations:

Auburn with a freshman quarterback in his first start
Nevada (now 3-2, just lost to Hawaii 54-3) with a freshman quarterback and inferior personnel
Montana from the Big Sky
Stanford with K.J. Costello coming off a concussion, injuring his thumb early in the game
Cal with the starting quarterback out and a suspect offense

They've played terrific, aggressive and relentless.. But you can't say they've taken anyone's best shot.

The Oregon offense has scored 21, 21 and 17 points in three games against Power 5 opponents. They've shown a maddening tendency to get in their own way and keep points off the board. It took them 5 games to make a field goal. Too many drives have ended with a turnover, a turnover on downs or a dropped pass.

I bleed Green and Yellow, far more than someone who is supposed to be writing about the team should. But with Colorado coming into town on a Friday night, a trip to Seattle 8 days later, it's time for this team to gel and find its identity offensively. Even CMC says they need to start generating some explosion plays.

With Miles Slusher and some notable recruits coming into town for the weekend, it'd be a great time for a confidence-boosting performance, on point and effective in all phases.

I was wrong about the Oregon defense

My post last week was a lot more nuanced than the solid block of text/all caps crowd gave me credit for, but after Friday night, it's pretty clear this is an historically great Oregon defense.

They just crush people. The depth is phenomenal, and they defend their end zone like it's sacred ground.

Their last five games:

Nevada 6
Montana 3
Stanford 6
California 7
Colorado 3

That's insane. To think we're just 4 years from the Brady Hoke debacle. What a turnaround.

What a joy it would be to have them dismantle the Huskies in Seattle, rattle Jacob Eason into a terrible performance. Huskies have been struggling so far in PAC-12 play.
