Shough v. Butterfield/Millen/Ashford

So it has come up in a couple of threads so i will address it as much as possible.

There is a slight difference between Shough's development and Mariota's in that we have seen Shough play this season. In his limited action he has shown everything you want to see from your number two.

He has a good command of the offense and playbook, he did not let the moment against USC "get to him" when Herbert went down. in fact he completed 2 of 3 for 41 yards and a really nice play to Mycah Pittman.

Millen has not practiced due to injury so right now Shough is head and shoulders above anyone else currently on the roster. Butterfield has a live arm and knows the game inside and out. He will get to Eugene early and there is no doubt that he will work hard to compete and win the job. What are the chances that a true freshman is going to take the job from a third year sophomore? We won't really know that for sure until we see both in action.

I think Shough is already really good and the presence of Butterfield and Millen will make him even better. I don't see Ashford getting the starting role next season, he has some things on which he needs work and will be well behind the others when he arrives.

What I learned from Mario’s Presser

We are all understandably excited about the marquee star players in this recruiting class, but every year we sign lower ranked athletes that turn out to be super stars. Mario piqued my interest in a few guys that are not the talk of the nation.

I get the feeling that we may have signed one of Oregon’s most talented football players ever today in Faaope Laloulu. He is enormous. Mario talked about his unusual athleticism. I saw a photo of him playing volleyball on the Pac12 network. He was way off the ground while going for a volleyball. Mario says that he is a good student. This guy has size, agility and learning ability. I am excited!

Mario feels like Jackson LaDuke is an elite recruit. He mentioned Jackson in the same breath as he did Flowe, and Sewell. Mario said that we signed the three best linebackers in the country.

Mario raved over Trey Benson, He says that Trey runs a 10.5 100! He is a speed back weighing over 200 lbs. Mario sounds excited about Trey.

Bennett Williams was a freshman All American at Illinois. Nuff said.

Yogi Roth on the Pac12 network raved about TJ Bass. This O lineman was from a tiny town and ended up at a relatively remote California JC. He is likely under rated. He is big and explosive. Mario knows O linemen. I think that TJ could end up becoming a starter before he graduates.

We may find out that Faaope Laloulu is the biggest get in this class in more ways than just his height and weight.

Jay Butterfield

I looked at the SJ Mercury’s Sports page listing where local high school football players signed. To my surprise Jay Butterfield was listed as an Oregon signee.

I thought that Butterfield was from Brentwood in Southern California. So I did some checking and discovered that there is a Brentwood in the Bay Area. It is located in the East Bay, not far from Berkeley.

Well Well Well ! This calls for a special congratulations for Mr Butterfield. You follow a long line of great Duck QBs from the Bay Area.... including Norm Van Brocklin, Bob Berry, Dan Fouts, and Dennis Dickson.

Congratulations Jay! The Northern CA alumni salutes you.

OT: ASU Coaching nugget

Was talking with our AZ guy Cody earlier today about Antonio Pierce's role in flipping Johnny Wilson and the relationship between Pierce and Wilson's HS coach Chris Claiborne and Cody said that there is a belief that if Pierce gets the now vacant ASU DC role that Claiborne could get a spot on the ASU staff and leave Calabasas.

Why does that matter? Because Claiborne would be someone that could really flip Southern Cal recruits to where ever he goes...

Robby Ashford

Ok so I'm hoping Quackdealer96 or some others can chime in here to let me know where he needs to develop the most. His highlight tape shows a strong arm and he looks like a stud with ball in his hands on the move. Watching highlights always makes you wonder what the throws look like that didn't make the tape and it seemed like he threw late a little too often in his highlights so reading a defense may be a problem at this point maybe? He also has a loopy throwing motion and seems to drop the ball to almost hip level in his delivery on a few throws. Is there more that I am missing? He already looks capable of running the rpo offense and I love his game but I am biased towards highly mobile qbs at the college level. I love Butterfields game too and am very happy with our qb room at this point.

Signing Day Thoughts

Just for those who peruse the boards here are some thoughts on today:

- We told you as far back as June that if Justin Flowe was going to play for a Pac-12 team, it would be Oregon. I know that the dalliance with USC over the weekend seemed disconcerting, but it gave me a few less worries than others. The Trojans did what they could, but this was really all Oregon even then. It says something when we are getting "Oregon signals" while someone is on an official visit.

- We also told you then that Jonathan Flowe was even more likely to be a Duck. Well, now I think we see another set of brothers play for the Ducks. The younger brother may not be as highly ranked in this case, but he is going to make a nice addition to next years class; especially as a complementary addition with Keith Brown.

- Exchanging Dontae Manning for Myles Slusher may be a slight hit rankings wise, but I like Manning a lot. He skyrocketed into the rankings in the most recent re-rank because he had a superb senior season. He has good length at 6-1 and can play in multiple spots on the defense. Everything I am hearing still leads me to believe that he will be a Duck in the end and I think fans will be happy with him once he shows up on campus.

- Luke Hill is sort of a forgotten commit. he has been committed forever and I really like his game.

- I know it is not the greatest of news, but as of late this afternoon, the best Georgia source I can contact feels as if Ringo and Darnell Washington will be Bulldogs in the end. I know that the shirt today really got some hopes up; and maybe for a reason; maybe Georgia folks are hearing it and are wrong. Kelee is not the type to troll either fan base. I think he probably did not put a lot of thought into which shirt he wore to school today because he was not announcing yet.

Three DB's visited Georgia last weekend: Ringo, Manning and Eric Reed. Reed signed with Auburn and Manning is most likely a Duck; yet the Georgia coaches are not out there looking for new DB's; they are pretty further entrenched in their belief on Ringo because of that reality. Right now, that still seems like the most likely case. Until I hear differently from a credible source, it seems as if Ringo signed with Georgia.

- Dwight McGlothern has not signed yet so he is someone to keep an eye on after the dust settles from this day. The Ducks liked him and have continued to speak with him throughout the process. As Mario Cristobal said today at his press conference, the staff is going to look at what they have and what they need to fill in some spots. It could be that if Manning is indeed on board that the staff decide to use that spot elsewhere and simply not pursue another DB.

He visited USC last weekend, but if the Ducks pursue him, I think they get him -- and if they do not, that tells you that the Ducks are likely done at the position.

- Cristobal mentioned a 'jumbo' tight end and I think that if Washington is out, that leaves Oregon considering Jack Yary. Of the top 25 tight ends in the Rivals rankings only Washington, Yary and Brandon Frazier (McKinney, TX) are unsigned. That leaves some slim lickings for the tight end, so this will really depend on how much the Ducks want to sign a tight end and if they decide on Yary.

I think that if the Ducks want Yary, they can get him. Robby Ashford really wants to get Washington to Oregon, so pay attention to what angle Oregon takes with Yary. If it seems that they are not giving him any attention, that could be a really, really good sign for Oregon and Washington.

- I really like Jacskon LaDuke. I called him "underrated" earlier today on Twitter, not because of his ranking, but really because he is like the overlooked linebacker in this class and I am glad Cristobal mentioned him. Having him alongside Flowe and Sewell makes this an historic LB group the likes of which we have never seen in Eugene. I heard someone say today that a single team has not signed the Nos. 1 and 2 LB in the same class in 14 years. That means not Alabama, not USC; not anyone. In 14 years! Add in LaDuke and I just don't know that anyone has had a better haul at LB in the Rivals era.
