Miami wanted him in a position above Manny Diaz, kind of like a GM role for the Canes. Somehow Diaz in a power play worked it so that the Canes offered him a lesser role UNDER Diaz.
Afterward there was contact made with Mario and there is the chance that he joins the staff as a sort of player development official. But this is not over. Miami folks tell me that they don't think he ends up at Oregon (some "agenting" and a little power play to see if Miami makes a different choice).
All of this is assuming, of course, that Cleveland forest him as they clean house. Time will tell, but I will trust what I have heard and that is that, in the end, Miami folks tell me Highsmithdoesn't not end up at Oregon.
