OL picture clearing up...

Coach Cristobal gave an OL update last night. Here are some notes.

  • OT: "It is clearing up. I think the part that is really exciting is we feel we have four guys who can play tackle, and a fifth who can jump out there in an emergency."
  • OG: "We feel we have five guys we can rotate inside and a potential sixth who could move there in a pinch."
  • C: "We feel we have three guys who can play center and developing a fourth."
  • Some of these are the same guys, they overlap.
  • Junior C Alex Forsyth: "I feel really good about the leadership that Alex Forsyth has provided. When you start playing with the ball in your hand a lot of times the guy slows down. Alex has done the opposite. He has sped up. When you are a center you are almost directing traffic out there. Air traffic controller is what you are. You’re pointing, you’re calling out numbers, you are making line calls, those things are being passed down, everybody is communicating."
  • Overall: "Coach Mirabal, you know how he grinds. Best in the country. He has got these guys poised for a big season."

Sounding like right now the ones are: C: Forsyth G: Bass, Sala T: Jones, Moore.

Ryan Walk

Not much has been said of Ryan by the coaching staff, but it seems a lot of players, Offensive and Defense have noticed his play, and mentioned him to the media each time they have a media session. The question is "is he having a great camp and will see some playing time or not." I'm rooting for the PWO. Any info guys?

Salave'a on recruiting...

Coach Salave'a talked the other day about the recruiting success here lately.

"It starts from the top down. Coach Cristobal and his ability to be able to connect with folks and people. I’m just blessed to be part of this staff. Men of character and leadership. The relationship building and their ability to connect with people is the biggest part of our recruiting methods.

"It is a people industry and when it is done right and you are surrounded by the right kind of staff, it is not hard to sell an institution."

Fall Camp: RB notes

I took notes and quotes from our interview with Coach Mastro yesterday. I have some stuff coming out on CJ and Cyrus separately.

Differences in the running game this year vs. last

"The run game will not be a lot different. There will be a little more variance to it. But the run game is similar to what we have done in the past.

"There are a few tweaks to it, things that will get our guys in space a little more."

Still some pistol under Moorhead?

"You will see a lot of it. It is not going anywhere. To us it is the great equalizer in the run game. We don’t give the answers to the test. You will see it as much as Coach Moorhead wants to call it.

"I know he had never done it before until he got here. I know he really likes it. So we’ll just let him play with it as he sees fit."

Any fullback formations this year?

Absolutely. There will be some variances in our offense this year that you can see stuff like that. It is definitely a possibility.

On getting to know Coach Moorhead

"I never met Joe before he got there. He is a ball coach. He is just like us. He eats drinks and sleeps football. I love his offense, I love what he does.

"It has been fun. He always wanted to run the pistol and didn’t really know about it. Now that we’ve had these months together, he’s like ‘man I love this, I wish I’d known about it before.’

"He is a good man, a good recruiter, a good coach. This is a great staff we have here. It’s a bunch of great dudes and it’s fun to work with these guys every day."

Sean Dollars

"Sean has gained light years. Obviously every freshman comes in thinking they are going to dominate the college football world. I think it was a rude awakening for him early.

"But I’ll tell you what, he’s taken his game to a new level. He’s everything we thought he was. He has matured his body a little bit, taken care of his body. Very very intelligent kid. We ask our running backs to be very smart in this offense. They have to know a lot. He is smart as they come.

"Very happy with his progression. You will see a lot of Sean this year."

Havoc Rating...

Don't know if you've been paying attention to the interviews but an item that has come up a few times is the term 'Havoc Rating'. I think it's a cool name and concept which basically is a metric which the Oregon coaches measure, basically for defense how disruptive is the player in different situations. For each position they have different metrics/items they watch. For interior DL it is third downs. Coach Salave'a explained.

"It is opportunities at the ball. For us (DT/NT) it is in third down situations. Obviously, it is kind of scarce sometimes with interior guys but we have certain opportunities there. The ones that continue to beat their one on ones and are around the ball are the ones being graded for production. It is a no brainere but it the best way to make sure all our guys our understanding where they are at and where they can do to improve themselves.

"It is no different than grading their technique, their effort. All those things. It is one thing to be evaluated but to have those presented to the guys gives them a meaning of why they need to go hard, why they need to be exact in terms of execution and the consistency part."

Freshman update: RB Trey Benson

He may not get a lot of PT this year because of depth but he is going to be a gem it sounds like.

Jim Mastro: "Trey Benson is really good. He is exactly what we thought he was. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast. He picked up the offense basically via Zoom trying to get him ready and he picked it up as fast as any freshman ever has.

"Smart kid, his upside is huge.

"He has the freshman mistakes and the freshman growing pains, but he is 215 pounds that can lower the boom on you and take it the distance. He is what we were looking for in that recruiting class and we absolutely hit a home run with that one."
