Herbert 125 QBR vs the Cheifs!

Am I reading it right that the kicker made only 1 of 3 xp attempts? 4 TD's plus FG should be 31, not 30, lol. Chargers must have gone for 2 on one of those TD's? Our guys is on fire! Anyone watch it?

I see Freeman is getting some touches for Carolina. that's great, as the last I heard he was cut from Denver.

Clemosn's DJU Looks Perdestrian in Loss to NCSU

Anyone else see any of that game? I think he will get it together, as there were times last year when Lawrence was injured and DJU looked really good, 44.9 QBR. Not Clemson's year, thus far anyway.

UA head coach Jedd Fisch post-game comments

OPENING STATEMENT
Our guys came out today and there was a lot of good football played tonight. I’m really excited and proud of the steps forward we took in a lot of areas. One of the things we talk about all the time is before you learn how to win, you’ve got to keep from losing. When you turn the ball over five times and commit nine penalties, that’s what’s going to happen.

I think Oregon’s a really good football team, as we know. They’re the No. 3 team in the country and rightfully so. They’ve won every game and they’ve won them well. We had a great battle going and had some opportunities. You look at some of the plays that were unfortunately not made for us, we had a throwback in the kick return, it’s a 65 yard return and we wind up not being on the details. There’s a lot of positives with the way our guys competed. We’re not a moral victory team, but what we are is a team that strives to get better every day and I do believe we got better today than we were yesterday.

Q. The vibe of the team when it was a five-point game going into the fourth quarter…

COACH FISCH: The vibe all the way through was, we’re in this football game and it’s the kind of game we wanted to play. We talked the whole week about how we thought the game was going to go and we said that in the start of the fourth quarter it was going to be a one-score game. Whether it be for us or for them, it’s going to be a one-score game, and then we’re going to let it roll and see what it looks like.

They’re very good, they’re very, very good. We gave them the ball in bad spots and they were able to rip off some beautiful runs. They’ve got some great players. Mario’s done a great job. He’s been here since 2017 when he came as the O-line coach and he’s recruited extremely well and built this program up, and they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Q. The things to build off of from this game…

COACH FISCH: We came into Autzen stadium against the No. 3 team in the country and it was a five-point game going into the fourth quarter. We rushed for over 200 yards, threw for over 200 yards. Jordan was able to call a lot of plays and that’s a lot of repetitions that he took. I wasn’t going to take him out and not let him finish the game. I like the way we controlled the ball in terms of time of possession, that’s a big thing for us. If we can be physical and get rid of these negative plays, tackles for losses and be able to run the football, good things are going to come.

But right now, we saw the standard in the Pac-12. We saw what it looks like, we saw what it looks like when you recruit the way they recruit for the amount of years they’ve recruited. Pretty impressive.

Q. Jordan McCloud’s performance…

COACH FISCH: Jordan’s our best quarterback and that’s why we started him. Jordan will remain our starter and he’ll play as long as he stays healthy. The more we were with him, the more he understood the system. The biggest concern I had going into the season was he only got here in training camp and we didn’t have him in the spring like we did the other two. His poise – this is a hard environment – we’re at the University of Oregon and it’s their first Pac-12 game. We come out and throw an interception on the first play, and then go down 10-0, but we respond and make it 10-7. Then we just continue to go, and he’s had the poise to keep on battling. He was never afraid to throw the football, I’m sure he’s really upset right now and I hate that for him. Those things happen and we’re going to grow from it and get better. He’s our best player at that position and that’s why we played him.”

Q. The season-high in rush yards…

COACH FISCH: Our guys are becoming more and more comfortable with the scheme. They’re becoming more and more comfortable with what we’re trying to accomplish. The runners ran with a sense of purpose today and you could see there was a discipline in the run. You can see sometimes in a zone running scheme like we run, you have to have a discipline. You have to have the discipline to know when to bounce it outside and I feel like with reps and opportunities, they’re getting better at it.

Q. The safety…

COACH FISCH: I’m still a little salty about the interception. We can’t miss on a corner route in that spot and we kind of lobbed it in there. Then I just ran to the huddle and said ‘a safety would be beautiful right now, boys’ and not only did they give it to us, but we responded with a touchdown in the same way it happened in the BYU game. That was really good. I think we’re a healthy football team going into the bye week. We’re going to put some shoulder pads on and we’re going to treat this thing as a way to get better.

Cristobal: Post-Arizona quotes...

Q. On finding a rhythm and maintaining momentum….

CRISTOBAL: We felt that in the second quarter. We got up 24-7 and then gave up a field goal and had a chance to score before halftime before we had a penalty we needed to avoid and can’t have. Then the third quarter was not a good quarter for us. They completely controlled the ball in the third quarter. I believe we had 6, 7, 8 plays. The fourth quarter continues to be a bright spot for us. We ended up winning it, I believe, 17-0. But the stuff in between is the stuff that we continually have to get better. That’s the bottom line. We should be and can be better at it, so we’ve gotta go to work.

Q. On the penalties…

CRISTOBAL: We had a lot of turnovers - we were plus-five there - but we countered that with nine penalties, which is something that is out of character for us. And we know that’s not good enough. I think a couple of them were out of aggressive play but a couple of the other ones you’ve got to be able to avoid. One of them was selfish. We’re going to have to teach it better and demand more from our guys and get better results.

Q. On the defense limiting explosive plays…

CRISTOBAL: We gave up some yards. They were on the field for 80+ plays which is way too much. We have to do a better job controlling the football. I felt in the first half we made the most of our possessions and scored, but then the third quarter was something we have to improve upon. I told the players in there that you’re not going to apologize for winning 41-19, but you’re going to attack it the right way. You’ve got to look at the areas you’ve got to get better at, the deficiencies you have to improve upon. And when you’re in conference play all these games are playoff games. You’ve got to understand if you have a chance to take the momentum you really have to take it, because all of these teams have really good football players and if you allow a team to continually make plays you could find yourself in a dogfight. Credit to Arizona. Their coaches and their players played a real tough game, but the fourth quarter is when we felt we finally took control of the game to close it out.

Q. On Kayvon Thibodeaux and Noah Sewell…

CRISTOBAL: Noah was awesome. He had 14 tackles. He was all over the field and brought it in every which way: the run game, the pass game, pass rush. Kayvon really improved a lot this week. He really felt good and wanted to try it. With the load management on there we were thinking maybe 6-10 plays. I think we got somewhere in that neighborhood, maybe 9. We really feel good about how he is going to be for this upcoming week. Those two were certainly bright spots today. Verone McKinley continues to be a dominant football player. Bennett Williams - I can’t say enough about his play - since the beginning of the season getting a pick and a pick-six. Mykael Wright getting a pick as well and Nate Heaukulani getting a pick. I think it’s the first time we’ve had five interceptions in a little bit. Turnovers were a bright spot. Winning the fourth quarter was a bright spot. Lots of stuff to improve upon.

Q. On developing depth on defense…

CRISTOBAL: You’ve got to. At this time of year a lot of things happen. Guys go down. Brandon Dorlus continues to be a very disruptive football player. He works hard in practice. He practices like he plays and vice versa. It’s showing every single game. I’m really proud of Treven [Ma’ae]. Treven has really worked himself into being a really good football player and that sack there on the boot where he had to chase the quarterback down and gather himself. Quarterbacks are hard to bring down now and Treven gathered himself well and was able to pull him down to secure the sack. I’m really proud of him and the rest of the guys.

Q. Did Kayvon Thibodeaux re-aggravate his injury?

CRISTOBAL: I don’t think it will completely feel normal all the time but there was no re-aggravation of an injury with him. It’s just been load management and we reached it so that’s when we pulled him out. Whenever we pull someone out with a nick or an injury we try to always advance him. In his case, he was wearing a different set of shoes. With some guys, we might actually do some rehab work on the sideline. Everything with him is from a load management standpoint and not a re-aggravation of his ankle.

Q. Did you expect Anthony Brown to run as much as he did? Were there times he should have pitched the ball?

CRISTOBAL: Well, the first one was the one where he maybe should have pitched it. His pitch key told him to do so, but he tried to make a play. He’s made some really good decisions with that before. I know that’s one he would like to have back. Our run game involves the quarterback a lot. Sometimes we call it thinking he will [keep it] and sometimes we call it thinking the back will get the ball. [Arizona] changed up a couple of their looks - not by much but enough that he carried it a couple more times than we thought he would be. But that’s always going to be part of the plan. We involve the quarterback. He’s a big guy. He’s a physical guy. And he likes it. It gets him going, so it’s certainly part of our game.

Q. It seemed like it was tough to get off the field on third and fourth downs especially. Is that something you need to address and work on this week?

CRISTOBAL: Well, you just said it. I think you just said it for me, so certainly.
