Top games across the country Week 10

Must-See Week 10 Games

Wake Forest (8-0) at North Carolina (4-4)
Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET (ABC)

If the Deacons’ magical unbeaten season is to continue, they’ll have to win in Chapel Hill for the first time since 2006. Carolina won a shootout when the rivals met at Kenan Stadium last year, 59-53, as Sam Howell threw for a program-record 550 yards and six touchdowns. But this season’s Tar Heels are a disappointing 4-4 after playing in the Orange Bowl in 2020. Their shoddy D will have its hands full with QB Sam Hartman and a Wake Forest offense that’s rung up at least 35 points in every game. Wake’s biggest challenge might be the unfamiliar pressure of playing as a top 10 team for the first time in program history.

Michigan State (8-0) at Purdue (5-3)
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC)

One week after a thrilling comeback win over rival Michigan… on the road… versus a hungry Purdue squad that’s already ended one Big Ten team’s perfect season. Yeah, this might be Mel Tucker’s toughest coaching challenge of the year so far. Behind the heroics of RB Kenneth Walker, Michigan State climbed to No. 5 in the latest AP poll, but the stretch run is littered with landmines. Like Saturday in West Lafayette, for instance. The Boilermakers have already defeated Iowa back when the Hawkeyes were the country’s No. 2 program. Plus, MSU’s Big Ten-worst pass defense will need to have all hands on deck to contain star Purdue WR David Bell.

Auburn (6-2) at Texas A&M (6-2)
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

Go ahead and call it an SEC West elimination, with both schools looking to hang with front-running Alabama in the division. A&M has already beaten the Crimson Tide, and Auburn hosts them at the end of the month, so this battle at Kyle Field has massive divisional implications. The Tigers have captured a tailwind of late, winning at Arkansas and stifling Ole Miss over the past two weekends. Meanwhile, the Aggies’ shocking upset of Bama has incited a 3-game winning streak. Both talent-rich defenses are allowing less than 20 points per game, so every drive is going to be important on Saturday afternoon.

LSU (4-4) at Alabama (7-1)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Sure, we’ve witnessed bigger matchups between these two heavyweights, but this is still LSU-Alabama. And at a minimum, there’ll be plenty of energy and NFL scouts at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday night. Considering these are the last two national champs, they’re on opposite ends of the championship spectrum today. Bama is still Bama, with a chance to win their way into a seventh playoff berth in the last eight years. LSU, meanwhile, is just 9-9 since winning the 2019 title, leading to the ouster of head coach Ed Orgeron. The Tigers did rise up to beat Florida, 49-42, three weeks ago, and will play this game fast and loose and with absolutely nothing to lose.

Philly Moved to Tempe Last Saturday

The cascade of boos that rained down on Herm and his Devils during the Coug scrum last Saturday must have reminded him of unforgiving Philly fans. The description in the ASU site tells of squad that has yet to play "a complete game" in a bitter recap of a season that is slipping away.

Schadenfreude seems inappropriate here in Duckville, having a recent, though less audible fan reaction to inept play, but the comparison stops there. We are 7-1 and played our second complete gamed of the season and don't expect sanctions at season's end and a possible coaching change.

College football shouldn't be seen as a life/death tableau, except in venues and programs that seem to invite it and provide object lessons for the rest.

Top games to watch across the country this week...

Must-See Week 9 Games

Michigan (7-0) at Michigan State (7-0)
Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET (FOX)

The month-long round-robin to determine a Big Ten East champ begins in earnest this weekend in East Lansing. As if instate bragging rights isn’t enough to make this matchup electric, Michigan and Michigan State are meeting as AP top ten teams for the first time since 1964. Someone is going to make a playoff statement, while someone else is going down for the first time. Mel Tucker beat Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor last Halloween as a 24-point underdog. Now he has RB Kenneth Walker to challenge a Michigan D allowing just 14.3 points a game. The Wolverines will counter with the gifted one-two rushing tandem of Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins.

Iowa (6-1) at Wisconsin (4-3)
Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Iowa and Wisconsin meet for the 95th time to see who keeps the Heartland Trophy. The Hawkeyes appeared to be coasting to a Big Ten West crown before falling to Purdue prior to last week’s bye. Plus, the Badgers are on a mini three-game roll, taking down those same Boilermakers last Saturday, 30-13. Wisconsin has solved its early-season defensive issues, now leading the nation in run defense at just 1.9 yards a carry. If Iowa fails to turn loose RB Tyler Goodson, it could be a long afternoon for QB Spencer Petras, who threw four picks in the Purdue loss.

Georgia (7-0) vs. Florida (4-3)
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

Georgia and Florida had bye weeks to prepare for the 99th edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. But no amount of extra time will help solve this ferocious Dawg D. With next-level speed and talent at every level, top-ranked Georgia leads the SEC in sacks and has allowed just 46 points in seven games. And while Gator coach Dan Mullen is an offensive innovator, he does not have access to the same talent level he did a year ago, when Florida won this matchup, 44-28. Additionally, the Gators are having a rough October so far, losing twice while allowing 321 rushing yards to LSU two weeks ago.

Penn State (5-2) at Ohio State (6-1)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC)

If Penn State can’t rebound, this season could unravel in a hurry. The Lions have dropped back-to-back games, losing to 2-5 Illinois in Happy Valley last weekend. And now they travel to Columbus to play an Ohio State team that’s been rolling since losing to Oregon in Week 2. The Buckeyes are sizzling hot, winning five straight by an average score of 54-13. The freshman backfield of C.J. Stroud and TreVeyon Henderson is maturing in real time, and the receiving corps is the most talented in the country. But the Ducks were the last ranked team OSU faced, and for all the problems Penn State has right now defense isn’t one of them. PSU allows 14.7 points a game and rank No. 3 nationally in pass efficiency defense.

I pray to God the Huskies don't outsmart us!

First, we don't want our players to see the Huskies get off the bus. All those horn rimmed glasses. pocket protector pencil holders, and crew cuts. Very intimidating. More importantly, my concern is that the
Washington coaching staff will come up with phisticated schemes our dummy players, and moronic coaches won't understand. I fear a conversation something like this, Noah Sewell- " What in tarnation are they doing out there coach"? Mario- " Dammed if I know Noah...I ain't never seen nothing like it!" Noah- " what will do do coach?" Mario- " Can't rightly say son.....DAMMM......why didn't we recruit some of them smart kids that Washington got? Are only hope is some of them have to leave at halftime to cram for midterms!"

Possible visit from three-star 2022 FL DT Isaiah Hastings

Hastings has taken one official to Alabama, and is looking to take more. A visit with Oregon was scheduled but was later cancelled. The Ducks, seemingly, are still in the running for Hastings.

The future

By Scott reed after the CU game:

While this was not nearly close enough to put the outcome in doubt, the inability to close strong for a second consecutive game will give Oregon fans plenty of concern heading into the stretch run of the season with four difficult games ahead.

Next up for Oregon is a trip to take on Northwest rival Washington in Seattle next week.
******************

And, this was against the weakest team in the Pac. Failing to close strong has an evil portend.
