Fifth Quarter 2021: Utah Loss

Took a little different format today. Went with Player of the game for Offense, Defense and Special teams and then 'What Went Wrong' discussion of each.

Some interesting stats:

1st down: 10 of 14 for 158 passing; 8 runs for 24 yards
2nd down: 4 of 15 for 28 passing; 8 runs for 0 yards
3rd down: 3 of 6 for 45 passing; 7 runs for 39 yards
4th down: 0 for 2 passing (both were 4th & long so no runs on 4th down)

The average distance to go on second down (when taking out Kris Hutson's 50-yard catch on 1st down) was 4 yards.

Possible visit from 2022 Florida DT Ahmad Moten

Ahmad Moten has been one of the hottest players on the recruiting trail this fall. Oregon has made quick work with him which may lead to a visit for the Oregon State game.

Must see Week 12 games...

Must-See Week 12 Games

Michigan State (9-1) at Ohio State (9-1)
Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET (ABC)

The three-team race to the Big Ten East Division crown will get more clarity this weekend in Columbus. Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan are 9-1, though the Buckeyes are the only one without a conference loss. However, the Spartans have already beaten the Wolverines, and an upset this weekend would give them control of their own destiny. MSU’s biggest challenge will be slowing down the Buckeyes’ passing game, which boasts precocious QB C.J. Stroud and the country’s deepest receiving corps. But the Spartans rank last in league pass defense, so it’s incumbent upon RB Kenneth Walker to keep the chains moving and the ball out of Stroud’s hands.

Arkansas (7-3) at Alabama (9-1)
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

Alabama is a little more vulnerable than usual. Arkansas has blown past expectations in Sam Pittman’s second year. Is this the season the Hogs end the Tide’s 13-game winning streak in the series? The Razorbacks have been plucky all season, beating Mississippi State and LSU by a field goal apiece the last two weekends. But the offense has to solve a quality D, which did not happen in earlier games with Texas A&M, Georgia, Auburn or last Saturday in Baton Rouge. Bama, which ranks third nationally in scoring, will get its points Saturday. QB Bryce Young has thrown 33 TDs and only three picks, and WR Jameson Williams has emerged as an elite game-breaker.

Virginia (6-4) at Pittsburgh (8-2)
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2)

The ACC Atlantic got some separation in Week 11, as Wake Forest beat NC State to take a commanding lead atop the division. Now it’s the Coastal’s turn. With a win at Heinz Field, the Panthers punch their ticket to Charlotte on Dec. 4. If they can’t hold serve, Virginia’s magic number to clinch drops to one. These are the conference’s top two passing games, so there should be plenty of points and big plays. It also figures to be an entertaining battle between the quarterbacks, Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and UVA’s Brennan Armstrong, two Maxwell Award semifinalists. Check the injury report, though, because Armstrong missed last week’s Notre Dame loss with a rib injury and remains day-to-day.

Oregon (9-1) at Utah (7-3)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC)

The Ducks and the Utes are in control of their respective divisions, so they’ll likely meet again in Vegas in two weeks. Utah is streaking, winners of six of its last seven and unbeaten at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The offense has gotten a big lift from QB Cameron Rising, a backup when the season began, and RB Tavion Thomas, a first-year transfer from Cincinnati. Unlike Utah, Oregon is thinking beyond just a third straight Pac-12 title and ahead to a possible playoff berth… if it can defeat the Utes twice away from home. The Ducks have won five straight since losing to Stanford on Oct. 2, aided by the healthy return of star DE Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Moss: And then there were 3

Good news. Wants to be the next KT. Probably needs to add 20-30 lbs, but I think KT put on quite a bit over the years to reach NFL edge size w/o loosing his burst.
Bama and ASU in there too.

Predict-a-score: WSU at Oregon

I'm going to get the party started a little early this week. I already wrote my full reasoning for our "expert" prediction article so will just give an executive summary here.

Oregon has played a more difficult schedule than WSU yet is 8-1 to their 5-4. Cougars are not especially good on the ground and when they pass, the rush should be something they haven't seen before.

Oregon 37 - WSU 23

PR REPLACEMNT(S)

Seven, Dye or Hutson most likely, per the O. Delgado does it for the scout team. It would be imprudent to use Dye, imo, given his workload and the higher chance of injury returning kicks. Wright has been doing KO's, and he could do it too. Utah has not given up many return yds., from what it sounds like. Have Hutson and 7 had enough game time to not choke, would be another question? I'd kinda like to see 7, as he seems like a threat in such situations.

Bored...... so want to talk about Saturday....

I have predicted a loss and hope I am wrong. I will give some of my concerns and welcome feedback on how you all are all thinking.
I think the offense will do O.K., as Utah is not real good against the run. However they may be better than most teams stacking the box, not afraid of the deep ball. I also don't see us wearing them out like we do most teams with our OL pounding away! Like Scott had mentioned they have a couple fast, aggressive LB/ends we need to make pay for their aggresiveness with play calling! Obviously protecting the ball is key! I think Brown needs to connect with at least two downfield passes (20 yard plus).

Our defense has been playing well but we will need 4 qtrs., not three qtrs. like we often show. Utah has three very good RB's and a good line. Rising is a good runner and passer so nothing is going to be easy. They also have a couple great hybrid TE's who love that 8-12 yard pass which we tend to struggle against. We need our stars to play like stars and everybody else to play solid games imo. to have a chance for the victory. I am hoping Rising isn't as calm as he has looked in a big game situation.

Utah always has great ST play, we need to be more than solid here Saturday also! Who will be returning punts!?

Thoughts? GO DUCKS!

CBS MBB TOP 25, UO OUT, BYU 14TH

Sounds about right. UM took a big hit too. Hopefully, by Maui time they get it together and regain some respect.
Interesting side note on Alex Barcello, at AZ 2016 HS POY and was at AZ 1st two seasons.
