Visit preview: 4-star ATH Aaron Butler on campus this week

Scott wrote about him this week, but wanted to pass along this update on 4-star former USC commit Aaron Butler who is visiting the Ducks over the next few days on an unofficial trip. His trip will span a few days, and he hopes to learn a lot more about the program and the plans for him should he choose to play for Dan Lanning, Will Stein and Oregon. He counts Lanning and Stein as two of the top three coaches he has built a strong relationship with in the process and he's expressed plenty of excitement about getting to spend some time with them this week.

Butler doesn't shy away from discussing the importance of NIL and making connections on that side as well and said his hope is to spend some time with Phil Knight at some point as one of his goals is to eventually become a Nike athlete.

He'll take official visits to Georgia and Colorado by the end of the month and could squeeze in a trip to Alabama as well before April is over. He already visited Colorado last month. All four schools plus Washington make up his top five.

"A head coach who you could treat like your big brother. You can talk to him about anything. You can be open with him, you can be honest with him, you can just be yourself. He accepts you. He's just a cool dude. That's what a lot of other coaches don't have. It's not always about that but the relationship piece with the head coach, it matters."

Interesting piece of info re Matt Mariota

Former Oregon TE Matt Mariota was on the sidelines at Oregon's spring football practice and intends to start working for Oregon's coaching staff. Mariota played for the Ducks from 2014 to 2018 and then headed to England for his Master's Degree at the University of Leeds this past fall. He was eligible to play for Leeds' American Football team this fall and did so. Now back in Eugene, he's working with Oregon's staff to join the program shortly as an intern and get into coaching.

New FutureCast Prediction in favor of Oregon for upcoming commitment (EDIT 8:30pm)

What's up, everybody!

Forney (Texas) four-star safety Aaron Flowers is gearing up to make his decision on Friday at 4:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. PT live on the Rivals YouTube page, and Oregon is pulling ahead of USC in the final hours. There hadn't been much resolution here going into the week, despite the USC buzz, but it appears that a clear frontrunner is separating in Oregon.

EDIT 8:30pm: Just talked to a source close to Flowers and I'm still expecting Oregon to win out tomorrow afternoon. I say that with the caveat that this recruitment has already flipped on a dime once in the last 24 hours, so there's no ruling out that it could happen again. That's from me, not my source. Source still confident in the Ducks.

Spring Practice No. 4 (Thursday, April 6)

Here's Gabriel's quick overview. We'll have a Troy Franklin story coming later today as well. The video interviews aren't posted yet, but I'll drop them in as soon as they are:

Sacramento safety Kingston Lopa

Kingston Lopa is a safety from Sacramento (Grant HS) who is on the verge of blowing up as a recruit. He's already gained plenty of traction coming into the spring, and the belief from his high school coaches is that more offers will be coming when coaches begin to hit the road soon. Oregon has become one of the three schools staying most involved along with Notre Dame and Tennessee, but he has already had an opportunity to visit Eugene last season for a game giving him some insight into the program.

He's built a really strong relationship with Tosh Lupoi, and he likes a lot about the Ducks. Lopa announced his decommitment from Arizona yesterday evening, and that means Oregon could become an even bigger part of the process now. I met up with him recently at his school and he is as intriguing of a prospect as you will see because of his length and skill set. He's every bit of 6-foot-4 but plays in the secondary.

It feels like he could eventually grow into a hybrid player with some added bulk, and he says the Ducks would want to use him all over the field as both a safety and linebacker.

You can read my previous full update with Lopa above with the added context that he is now no longer committed to any program.

"We're very close," Lopa said about his relationship with Lupoi. "I know he really wants me on that defense. I know he could develop me because he has proven it. He had first-round picks when he was at Alabama, and he had two safeties go in the first round. I just know he could develop me."

Interview with four-star Rivals250 safety Aaron Flowers about his recent visit and upcoming decision

Four-star safety Aaron Flowers, from Texas, checked out Oregon two weekends ago as part of a final flurry of visits (along with USC and Alabama) before making his decision. He's set to announce his choice on April 7.

I talked to him last night at length. Here's the interview:

Is Women's basketball ready for a change?

After some great recruiting and production from his initial recruiting class, Graves has brought big names to campus but neither maintained performance nor retained highly rated players. The team could best be described as mediocre within a strong conference. It would seem that the facilities are here and support (though it has visibly waned) is in waiting. I'm not a great analyst nor do I want to prematurely put the coach on the hot seat. I'm also not close enough to campus or the department to dig into the problem so I could be missing some important stuff. It would seem time to answer some questions or consider a change. Any thoughts, other than just piling on?

How Bout' Dem Aztecs!

One thing I love about college hoops. The power houses don't always win. P12? Are they any good in FB? An absolutely beautiful J at the buzzer. Wow.
