Fifth Quarter: Spring Game 2017

Here were my thoughts from the press box as the game unfolded.

Essentially, I think the offense is going to be very good this year. They will be very versatile with some great plays in the run game and a very good QB; a full complement of returning offensive linemen which will have better depth with the return of Crosby (and later addition of Moore).

The running backs? gonna be fine. I think I see five wide receivers who can make plays: Carrington, Nelson, Mitchell, Lovette and McNeal - and more will show up in the fall. WR is gonna be deep

Tight end? Ryan Bay looked like the second best tight end of the group, so this team is going to have to hope Breeland and Bay stay healthy because they are perilously thin at TE.

Defense is another story. I think the DB group is a LOT better and I think that could help overall a lot. I am going to have to reserve judgment until I see them play someone other than themselves, and in something other than a split squad format. The defense will be better, but the LB position still looks like a big ol' work-in-progress.

Flock Talk: Hope after darkness

Taking some poetic license looking at recruiting this week:

It is too much of a cliché to refer to spring as a time of hope. It is too much of a cliché to call spring football some sort of cathartic revelatory opportunity to forget the past. Despite those cliché one-liners, sports is a window into the soul of individuals and society as a whole. In the shadows of concussion lawsuits, increasing awareness of violence on campus, rising costs, billion dollar television contracts and a fractured world of haves and have nots, there is always something pure to behold.

Flock Talk: Hope after darkness

Thoughts on three commits..

I've seen both Dawson Jaramillo and Adrian Jackson recently and here are some thoughts:

-- Jackson is a great-looking, elite-level athlete who could be a big safety or a rangy outside linebacker. He prefers to play safety so we'll see how the Ducks use him. He can come into the box and make tackles, he is great in coverage and because of his length he can make a lot of plays. Like him a lot.

-- I saw Jaramillo at the recent Under Armour Camp in Los Angeles and he has a mean streak I like. He doesn't have the fastest feet and sometimes got beat to the edge but I liked his power and he didn't back down to playing tough and physical.

Both very nice pickups for Oregon today.
