SB: Home opening wins...

From Oregon Communications:

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon used the long ball to earn a doubleheader sweep of Loyola Marymount and Seattle Saturday in its opening night at Jane Sanders Stadium in 2020. Deijah Pangilinan hit her first two career home runs in the game one win, while Ariel Carlson hit a massive three-run shot to cap off a run-rule victory in the second game.

Game 1 (Oregon 7, Loyola Marymount 5) – Oregon built an early lead behind four home runs in the first three innings, then held on late in a 7-5 win over Loyola Marymount in game one of the doubleheader.

How it Happened: Oregon took the lead early on with a power surge at the plate. In her first at bat in Jane Sanders Stadium, Terra McGowan crushed a solo shot out to left field to put the Ducks on the board. Two batters later, Allee Bunker made it 2-0 with an opposite field solo homer.

Pangilinan ripped a no-doubter out to left center for her first career home run to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the second, but LMU got that run back in the top of the third to make it 3-1.

The Ducks stretched the lead to 7-1 behind a four-run third inning. Pangilinan hit her second homer of the game to make it 5-1, this time a two-run shot that scored Ariel Carlson. Haley Cruse drove in the other two runs with a two-out, two-run single up the middle, driving in Jasmine Sievers and Maddie Hopper.

LMU answered with a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to make it a game down the stretch. They scored two in the fourth on a hit and an error before plating two more in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Brooke Yanez came on in the fifth, though, and helped limit the damage there before retiring six of the last seven she faced to earn the save.

Game 1 Box Score Notes: Oregon hit four homers in a game for the second time this year … Pangilinan became the first Oregon player since teammate Hannah Galey on Feb. 8, 2019 to hit two homers in a game … She finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a hit by pitch … Cruse 11th multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs … Hopper got her first start as a Duck and recorded her second multi-hit game of the year, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored … Oregon pitching struck out double-digit batters for the eight time this year, and the third time in a four-game stretch.

Game 2 (Oregon 10, Seattle 2) – Oregon broke things open with a nine-run fourth inning while Jordan Dail turned in a strong effort in the circle in a 10-2 victory in five innings over Seattle to complete the doubleheader sweep.

How it Happened: The Ducks’ bats were quiet for most of the nightcap until they pulled away by sending 13 to the plate in a nine-run inning. Four straight singles started off the frame, with Mya Felder and Sievers picking up RBI base knocks, Sievers’ being a two-run single to make it 4-0. Cruse followed with a sacrifice fly before a Rachel Cid RBI single and a single by Bunker that caused a throwing error allowing McGowan to score.

Carlson came up after Bunker and hit an absolute mammoth shot onto the tennis courts way beyond the left field fence for a three-run shot to put the nail in the coffin. Dail took a no-hitter into the fifth, but gave up a leadoff single and two-run triple before the game ended when the Ducks cut down a runner trying to score on a wild pitch.

Cruse got things started with a leadoff line-drive solo homer to left field to put the Ducks on the board early once again. Dail rolled through the first four innings, retiring 12 of the first 15 she faced, only surrendering a pair of walks and a hit by pitch.

Game 2 Box Score Notes: The nine-run fourth inning marked the third time the Ducks have scored at least that much in a frame this year, joining a 10-run second vs. George Washington and an 11-run fourth vs. Dayton … Oregon reached double-digits in runs scored for the fifth time this year … Carlson turned in her seventh multi-RBI game of the year, driving in all three on her homer, finishing 2-for-3 … Cid went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI … Cruse delivered another multi-RBI game, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Overall Notables: Oregon has now outscored its opponents 62-0 in the first two innings over its first 21 games … The Ducks hit six home runs over the two games, the third time they have hit that many long balls over a two-game span this year … Five different Ducks went deep, with Pangilinan being the only player with multiple long balls … Cruse went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in the doubleheader while Carlson was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored … Pagnilinan was 3-for-4 with three runs scored over the two games.

On Deck: The Ducks play two more on Sunday to wrap up the Oregon Tournament, taking on Seattle at 2:30 p.m. and Portland State at 5 p.m.

Pritchard Article

Big game for everyone, and sure doesn't want to loose this one. All time points may be out of reach, but he's gonna in the lead for a long list of career records, most importantly, wins.

"Oregon’s program-record holder in career assists (654), wins (104) and starts (139), Pritchard will tie for the UO record in games played (144) tonight and surpass in the Pac-12 Tournament. He’s four steals away from that Oregon record and 175 points shy of Ronnie Lee’s UO record of 2,075

*****

Pritchard can add to his trophy case significantly in the weeks ahead. He’s in the running for the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, but without question the mark that carries the most significance to him is his UO record 104 career wins and counting."

Thursday practice notes...

I just got done with watching today's practice. They let media in for about the first 35 minutes or so today. It went so fast seemed like five minutes.

  • Noah Sewell is a huge guy. He is easily the largest of the linebacker corps. He was not practicing today although he was suited down and going around with the LB group, just not doing drills. We were told before practice several players were sick but I don't think he was one of them. So maybe a minor ding or something.
  • Daewood Davis is back at WR, and they are applying for a sixth year for OL George Moore.
  • Watched new CB coach Rod Chance for awhile. He certainly knows what he is doing, although I noticed his drills were not going rapid fire like other positions. Seemed like he was referring to his practice schedule/planner a bit. I totally get it being his first day of practice here and he being a relatively young coach. I'm sure his guys will be getting max reps in no time.
  • Moorhead on the other hand hit the ground running. You could not tell this was his first day of practice. He has coached for a long, long time and looked comfortable as could be out there.
  • The 1st and 2nd string OL today were these guys
  • I loved Jay Butterfield's arm and release. I like the way the ball gets out of his hand briskly. He does not have to muscle throws, he is smooth. Certainly not saying he will be the starter lol, but he looked good for a first day throwing the football in practice here.
  • JJ Greenfield seemed pretty comfortable for a first day guy. He was moving to the music during warmups just like the vets do.
  • He is kind of skinny. So is Bennett Williams. I would like to see both guys a little thicker.
  • Lots of good energy out there. Did not seem like a nervous energy, seemed like an excited group who want to win the Pac-12 again.
  • I took a bunch of photos and if any of them are decent will share below.
  • All for now.

Duarte out for reg. season and at least through P12 tourney, Richardson?

What a messed up year in the injury dept. I didn't know Richardson was hurt , but I guesss he turned his ankle vs Beavs...
I was so optimistic-- the whole NCAA being wide open earlier this year-- then injuries kick in. Oh well, win tomorrow with whoever can suit up. Do ya think Pritchard has the green light to let it fly, lol? Mathis is shooting better again and especially at home. Got to win these home games, and SC over UCLA would be nice too.
