BB: What's next?

The Duck baseball team will not have to wait long to find out if they will be a regional tournament host. That notification is scheduled to be announced at 5:30 pm today. The complete NCAA Tournament field will be released on Monday morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on ESPN2.

Season notes:
  • Oregon’s 20 conference wins are the second most by a Ducks’ team in school history … The 2013 team finished with 22 wins
  • The Ducks’ finished the season in second place in the Pac-12 Conference, matching the 2013 team for the best finish in the modern era
  • Zavala drew a base on balls in the top of the ninth inning to break the Oregon single-season walks record held by Guy Krause (1972)
  • Yovan’s three RBI tied him with Kasevich (2021), Spencer Steer (2019) and Ryon Healy (2013) for the most multi-RBI games (16) in a season.

New Chargers coach praises Justin Herbert's "command in and out of the huddle" on Day 1 of OTAs.

Updares from my new favorite NFL team:

And we think the PAC-12 refs are bad

Last night in Detroit, an AL umpiring crew walked Yankee Gio Urshela on three balls.

Urshela did do a good job of selling the call, tossing his bat aside after a wild 2-2 pitch and trotting to first.

In other news, Dyer was down, Cliff was in and Cam fumbled. Zach Ertz, however, was out.

MBB: Ducks add Syracuse transfer

The Oregon men’s basketball team has officially added 6-foot-7 forward Quincy Guerrier to its 2021-22 roster, head coach Dana Altman announced on Thursday.

Guerrier joins the Ducks after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Syracuse. He was a third-team all-ACC selection for the Orange in 2020-21, averaging 13.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the floor.

“We are excited to bring Quincy into our program,” said Altman. “He is a physical player and his versatility offensively will allow him to play a number of different positions for us. I also love what he’ll give us defensively and on the boards. I think he has a very bright future and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

Guerrier owns 11 career double-doubles, including eight as a sophomore. He posted 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds on Dec. 16, 2020, vs. Northeastern, and followed that up with a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds in Syracuse’s next game vs. Buffalo. In the Orange’s second game of the season vs. Niagara, Guerrier went 9-of-10 from the floor for 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. He grabbed double-digit rebounds nine times in 2020-21, including five games with at least 13 boards.

The Montreal, Quebec, native will also add a strong defensive presence for the Ducks. He had at least one blocked shot 18 times in 2020-21, with four-or-more blocks on four different occasions. Guerrier also recorded multiple steals five times as a sophomore.

Guerrier will bring NCAA Tournament experience to Oregon, reaching the Sweet Sixteen with the Orange in March as a No. 11 seed. He had 12 points and seven rebounds in a second-round win over West Virginia while matching his career-high with five blocked shots.

Guerrier averaged 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds as a freshman in 2019-20. He recorded his first career double-double vs. Penn State with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and scored a season-high 16 points vs. NC State while grabbing 10 boards. Guerrier shot 49.7 percent from the floor during his debut season.

Guerrier went to Syracuse from Thetford Academy, where he averaged 24.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 2018-19. During the summer of 2016, Guerrier competed for the Canadian Under-17 World Cup Team.

Defense can't win championships anymore?

It's an offensive era in college football, and the last three national champions have been scoring machines.

But it's a mistake, Mike Farrell says, to think that defense is dead.

The Ducks probably aren't a playoff team quite yet. They may be able to win a third PAC-12 championship with a formula of a great defense, a great kicking game, speed and athletic ability on special teams and a steadily improving offense.

That seems to be their best chance.

BB: Oregon/Cal Game 2...

6:05 pm tonight is scheduled for the first pitch in game 2 of the three game regular season finale for the Ducks.

Huge implications. If they win the next two, they share the Pac-12 title with No. 7 Arizona. They would also likely clinch hosting a regional series.

Cullen Kafka (5-3, 2.56) scheduled to start for the Ducks
Sean Sullivan (3-5, 3.61) scheduled for the Bears

The o-line has to get better or the 2021 Ducks are doomed to mediocrity

Great, detailed report from Scott today in the War Room, breaking down the performances and issues with the 2020 o-line:

If there's a cause for optimism with this group, it would be that working a full, uninterrupted year with Mirabal, Cristobal and Feld will improve their cohesion, conditioning, technique and pad level.

As Scott points out, Penei Sewell is the gold standard in terms of playing early and dominating, but Oregon's had a few others who have played well early (descriptions from their goducks.com bios):

Jake Fisher 2012 The first-year starter opened 11 games at right tackle while appearing in all 13 games his sophomore season…

Tyrell Crosby 2014 — Made the most of his opportunities as a true freshman, coming off the bench to take part in 40 snaps in the season-opening win vs. South Dakota before injuries along the front line helped open the door for nine starting assignments at right and left tackle - including the final six outings.

Tyler Johnstone 2012 — Afforded Freshman All-America acclaim after making his collegiate debut in season’s opening win vs. Arkansas State and remained as a left tackle starter for all 13 games

No wonder they're in last place department

The Detroit Lions are moving Penei Sewell to right tackle.

UCLA is just now concluding spring practice. On the recruiting trail, Chip Kelly is pitching 2023 quarterback Nicholaus Iamaleava by comparing him to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Oregon: “I'm really connecting with the coaches there. They're really down-to-earth. They love connecting with my family. Coach [Bryan] McClendon has been showing me different plays and different schemes that they're working on out there. It looks like a really fun offense. It's just a really good scheme, so they've shown me where I would be with them, and I think it's a place I would enjoy.”

Flock Talk: 57% more juice and scoop than the other leading brand

Good morning.

If you haven't yet visited the front page of The Little Website That Could, be sure to peruse today's Flock Talk, which blankets the forest of Oregon football with an English Ivy of insight and literate observation:

Among the salient points elucidated and illuminated are:

Oregon's defense has measurably more talent than it did in 2014, but ignition of the offense is still being worked out in R&D.

Duck fans may come down with a case of Boogie Fever.
