Fall Camp: Day 2 notes...

Day 2 of fall camp and the Ducks kicked off practice at about 9:30 Saturday morning. I spent my time, about 15 minutes each watching the defense go through station drills then I watched the O-Line for about 15 minutes. These are just my OL thoughts. I'll add more notes as I get a chance so check back.

Offensive line

I love watching Alex Mirabal coach the OL. He is excellent at it. He is very clear with his instructions and very demanding. He encourages and corrects all at the same time. Mirabal pushes them hard and doesn’t cut them any slack on at practice. I like it.

As a whole, the OL looks to be in dang good shape in both senses of the word. Lots and lots of D-1 OL bodies out there for the Ducks.

I don’t see a bunch of bellies handing over belts, yet this is probably the biggest OL I remember in the 15+ years I have covered Oregon. They look to be in quite good shape for big fellas…another hat tip to Coach Feld and the S&C staff and the off-season work everybody put in.

Depth on the OL is great if you are just looking for guys who pass the eyeball test of being D-1 OL. The big thing will be learning the playbook, and in particular for OL, learning to communicate with one another. Didn’t get to see them work on that today but we’ll see how those items progress this fall.

I would not be surprised to see Jackson Light Johnson and Marcus Harper on the field for the Ducks at some point. Despite their youth they both project to be ready for some minutes this year.

I asked Coach Cristobal the other day about OL depth and what would be his ideal # of guys in the rotation this year after rotating six last year. He couldn’t really answer that heading into fall camp, of course but said as many guys as are ready. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a nine-man rotation this year in the OL.

Dammit two Ducks get themselves in trouble

Two presumed defensive back starters face charges after police say they targeted people with pellet guns late Tuesday night.

Eugene police responded to calls around 11:45 with three victims reporting injuries. The incident occured near downtown

EPD say DJ James and Jamal Hill, both 20, were charged with three counts each of reckless endangering, assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and disorderly conduct.

EPD reports one person was hit in the face, but none of the victims were hospitalized.

Another victim reported nearly being hit by the suspects’ vehicle as they left the area.

Officers retrieved a handgun-style and rifle-style pellet gun.

The University of Oregon Athletic Department was not immediately available for comment.

Jessica Hull

I watched a daytime broadcast of the track today. Most of you will likely be watching the evening telecast. The one that I watched had two British broadcasters and one American… it was more of an international focus.

Since many do not as yet know results, I won’t mention any. However, I will mention something regarding Jessica Hull the women’s 1500m.

When the entrees for each final come out, they come one by one as their name is announced. The athlete then stands alone on an entry stage in front of a big screen with their name and a giant video impression of their nation’s flag. As Jessica was announced while standing alone on the stage, in front of the Australian flag, she broke into a big smile and flashed the Oregon O for the whole world to see.

Women’s 4x100… 2 Oregon Silver Medals

Ahhhh! Feel the fix! Oregon needed that …as did the US… after the men’s 4x100.
I watched it in the early afternoon on an NBC app. It was an international broadcast that really didn’t have an American focus. However, the British broadcaster singled out Jenna Prandini as having put the US back into the race on her third leg. He called Prandini’s third leg “Brilliant”.

Oregon will not drop jaws with our medal count, but Jenna dropped some jaws with her relay leg. Right now Oregon has:

Silver in Softball
Bronze in track ..Women’s 800 ( Rogers)
2 Silvers in the 4x100(Gardner,Prandini)
That’s 4.
Oregon is guaranteed either a Gold or Silver in Baseball
So a minimum of 5 medals.
We still have the Marathon and the Men’s 1500 to go.
So, you can see how much that women’s 4x100 meant. We had two of the most thrilling track athletes in Oregon his in English Gardner and Jenna Prandini on the 4x100 team.

Prandini was in both the 100 and 200. This is her second Olympics. So in three tries she had yet to make the podium. It was especially satisfying to see her win a Silver Medal. Gardner now has aSilver to Go with her Gold from Rio.

Centrowitz Out, Hocker Advances To Final

To say that the once high hopes of a big medal haul among Ducks and Duck alumni has been crumbling is an understatement. Matt Centrowitz, the 1500 Rio Gold Medalist failed to get past the semi finals. Oregon student Cole Hocker did advance and will be running in the 1500 finals today.

Alumna Jessica Hull of Australia will be running in the women’s 1500 today.

The women’s 4x1 will be running in the finals. Oregon has two alumni in that pool. I know that English Gardner has been running the third leg. I do not know if Jenna Prandini has run yet. If not, then she will have to run in the finals to be eligible to medal.

Galen Rupp will be running in the marathon. This is his third Olympics. He medaled in both the London and the Rio Olympics. Does he still have it? We’ll soon find out.

The men’s baseball team has an ex Duck. I believe that the team is still in medal contention.
